Heather and Jennifers new album
made quite a splash on the Billboard
Charts! II debuted at #18, selling close to 8,000 albums. Kinleys II"
debuted at #177 on the Billboard 200. "Just Between You And Me" debuted at #33
in October of 1997 and peaked at #22 in November of that same year so the new album debut
is the highest The Kinleys have ever been on the album chart. Thats great
considering that the album didnt come out until Tuesday. So thats 8,000 albums
in six days. Not bad, huh?

The Kinleys II
(Epic ***1/2)
If it ain't broke. . . . With The Kinleys II, Heather and Jennifer Kinley build on the
strengths of their 1997 debut, Just Between You and Me. The twin sisters, who grew
up in Northeast Philadelphia and Feasterville, display a greater confidence and
assertiveness, born of that debut album's artistic and commercial success.
Once again, many of the numbers have a pungently bluesy air, thanks to Heather's smoky,
Wynonna-ish voice and a musical mix that continues to give prominence to the dobro.
(Jennifer also steps up this time with her first-ever lead studio vocal, a fine take on
the pop-country ballad "If I Ever Needed You"). The Judds remain an obvious
influence, but the Kinleys avoid that duo's tendency toward the cloying. Some of the
songs, no doubt, could sound gooey-sweet in the wrong hands, but the Kinleys bolster them
with their impassioned sibling harmonies and frill-free arrangements that are indicative
of this album's more muscular sound.
Most of the material, in fact, is pretty strong, allowing the sisters to range from sultry
and playful to soulful and earnest. Their version of coproducer Radney Foster's "I'm
In" offers one of the best examples of their vocal magic, as they trade repetitions
of the title line in a way that thrillingly builds the intensity of the song's pledge of
devotion.

The Kinleys are set to release their
sophomore album release, II, next week. "To me, it's a little bit more exciting this
time around," says Heather. "We took a long time putting this album together and
I really think it was worth it because we wanted the perfect songs." The album was
more than a year in the making and is produced by country hit maker Radney Foster of the
1980's duo Foster and Lloyd. For the twins, the new work is something they are proud of.
"That's where
we wanted to be in the end you know, just proud of what we had put together and
created," says Jennifer. "We're thrilled with it and we wanted to make sure
that all the pieces fell into place and we feel like they have." The album will be in
stores on Tuesday.

HERE COME THE KINLEYS
"She Ain't The Girl For
You" is the title of their latest single, but Heather and Jennifer Kinley are
evidently just the girls for a lot of people as they prepare for the July 18 release of
their second Epic CD, II. The album's arrival finds the twin sisters in the midst of a
busy summer of touring, and hot on the heels of Jennifer's marriage to
songwriter/recording artist Adam Hughes. More than a year in the making, the new offering
recaps the strengths of their gold-certified first release, Just Between You And Me
(1998), which netted them the Academy of Country Music's award for Best New Duo or Group
that year, as well as Grammy, American Music Awards and Country Music Association
nominations, but adds a new twist: after the first half of the album was completed with
Just Between's. producers, Tony Haselden and Russ Zavitson, the duo turned to
left-of-center country/rock artist Radney
Foster for the remainder of the CD's thirteen tracks.

KINLEYS' ALBUM READY TO GO
Kinleys II will hit the streets July 18th but according to
producer Radney
Foster, it's already a hit with his group of session pickers who say the girls outdid
themselves on this one. Foster, who produced half the album, recently told Billboard
magazine, "Every single [studio] player came up to me at some point and said, 'These
girls are swingin' for the bleachers.'"

Chely Wright Sings on New Single!
Chely Wright was recently in the studio to provide
background vocals for one of the songs on the Kinleys' new album. Chely initially wanted
to record the song "She Ain't The Girl For You" but Jennifer and Heather already
had the song on hold. The Kinley's new producer , singer song-writer Radney Foster, knew
of the situation and invited Chely to sing on the record. The Kinleys are fans of Chely
and considered it an honor for her to be part of the song. "She Ain't The Girl For
You" is written by Vince Malamed and John McElroy
and produced by Radney Foster. Courtesy of www.kinleys.com |
