Welcome to my X file.  The X-Files is an American T. V. show that ran from 1993 to 2002.  It tells the story of two F. B. I. agents who investigate paranormal phenomena, often involving extraterrestrials.

The series begins when Dana Scully, a young medical doctor who has recently joined the F. B. I., is assigned to work on a special project called the X-files.  The X-files are old, unsolved cases that have been unearthed by agent Fox Mulder, a trained psychologist whose colleagues refer to him derisively as "Spooky" Mulder.  Mulder believes that many of the X-files are unsolved because they involve paranormal phenomena.  Scully's understanding is that she has been assigned to "debunk" the X-files, disproving the existence of the supernatural, and eventually shutting the project down.

Initially suspicious of each other, Mulder and Scully grow to trust and rely on one another.  The two bring their different perspectives to every case they work on.  Mulder, who "want[s] to believe", tends to see a supernatural explanation for everything, while Scully, the skeptic, always tries to find a scientific solution.  Although their different views often create tension, Mulder and Scully learn to respect each other's opinions, working together to solve the cases they encounter.  They develop a dynamic and effective partnership, as well as a deep, mutually supportive friendship.

In the first season of the series, the episodes tend to stand alone, each one telling a different story.  However, as the series progresses, an over-arching plotline begins to emerge, involving a conspiracy to conceal the existence of extraterrestrials.  Part of the conspiracy involves Mulder's younger sister, Samantha, who disappeared when she was a child.  His belief that she was abducted by aliens drives his search for the "truth".  Scully's involvement in his quest also becomes personal in the second season, when she is apparently abducted by aliens for a brief time.  Episodes dealing with these storylines and other elements of the conspiracy are commonly referred to as "mythology" episodes, and they tend to come at regular intervals throughout each season.

The X-Files is my favourite T. V. show ever, which is why I decided to create this file on it.  It officially lasted for nine seasons, plus two movies, The X-Files: Fight the Future (1998), and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008).  Unfortunately, after the end of the fifth season, the quality of the series degrades rapidly.  Beginning with the movie, the warm and caring relationship between the protagonists begins to change in ways I do not appreciate.  Although the sixth season has many good qualities, I find its light, comical tone inconsistent with that of previous seasons.  The seventh season is a disaster, and, with a few possible exceptions, completely unwatchable.  In the eighth season, things improve somewhat, but the show also sees the introduction of two new F. B. I. agents, breaking for the first time the Mulder-Scully partnership that held the series together for seven years.  By the end of the season I was so discouraged that I never even bothered to watch season nine, but I am sure it bore little resemblance to the series I originally started watching. Nor have I seen the second movie.  Indeed, I have decided that, a few decent episodes in season six notwithstanding, I prefer not to consider anything after season five to be the "true" X-Files.  As such, this file is devoted exclusively to the first five seasons, which I sometimes think of as the Vancouver episodes, since they were filmed in Vancouver, B.C., while subsequent seasons were filmed in L.A.

Enjoy!
