I am John Hill and I was proud to command and work with the men of the "Deuce" from sometime in the first half of 1968 until my ETS in early April 1969. I remember some of the guys, especially Adolpho Montoya and some of the other names I read, but I had tried for so long to forget Vietnam that for a few moments it was difficult to even try to respond. I remember a lot of convoy escorts from Long Bein to Tay Ninh, trading truck loads of gravel to the mess officer at Long Bein for some steaks that we all enjoyed a lot, but I have pushed down some of the memories for so long I don't remember names and places or dates. I remember building a runway and forward base south of Cu Chi and west of Tay Ninh where we got clobbered as we were moving back and forth to a laterite pit in a convoy and I remember losing guys that day as well as some Special Forces guys and Cambodians that were providing some security.

I would appreciate if any of you guys remember me if we could trade a few e-mails and maybe some of you will be able to help me remember some of the things I tried to forget.

Regards
John Hill

I was trying to find my old FSB (Lanyard) and found your site for the "Duece".   I commanded C Btry (8"/175MM), 2/32 Arty and was one of those who selected the site after coming across the border from Cambodia.  I was also the Btry Group commander for our unit (C Btry) and the 1/27 Arty (155 Self Propelled Arty).  I was the FSB Commander for about 5 months as the Fire Base was developed clearing the jungles, building the perimeter, etc.  I have many pictures and some movies of incoming rockets and mortars at FSB Lanyard.  I believe I was at Lanyard from the time we cleared the jungle until I relinquished command in Nov, 70.

I would love to connect with you somehow and share a cup of coffee and take a trip down memory lane.   I found the old base on Google Earth and it changed into a special forces triangle about 2 years after I left.  Do you know when that happened?

I have many questions and would love to share my pictures and memories for posting on your web site.

I can be reached as follows if you would like to talk:

Hi there!!

My name is Lyn Jester.  I am the Family Readiness Leader for the Delaware Army National Guard, 1049th Transportation Company in Seaford, Delaware.  I am so glad that I stumbled upon your web site.  I have been doing research for one of our soldiers.

I am writing on behalf of that soldier.  His name is Vaughn D. Shuler he served with the "Deuce" during the Vietnam War and did two tours.  He was a SPC 5 and worked with the rock crushing detail.   He is retiring this year and we would like to do a shadow box for him.

I had read on your web site that you came across some patches.  I was wondering if it would be possible to get one of them for now SFC. Shuler.  Also I was looking on your web site and was wondering if the "Deuce" earned any unit citations.  If so could you update me with that information.

Unfortunately SFC Shuler lost all of his information that he had kept in a fire.  Any help that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance!

Lyn

It has other engravings, including the persons "nickname".  I just thought it might mean something for the man, or a family member, to get this item back.

I am doing some research for my dad......his name is David Sherman and he was in the 554th and was in Nui Ba Den in 1969.  I beleive he said he drove some truck, not a dumptruck, but a different kind.  I actually read him a couple posting from here and he remembered the crane with "pipe dreamer" painted on it.  If you remember my dad or know anyone that does, could you please send me an email and let me know?
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Carrie Sanders

The "Deuce" is dear to my heart, and the men that I served with even dearer. I have been fortunate over the years to make contact with a number of Brothers, and it always warms my heart to reconnect, but the news I got today saddens me deeply. We have lost another Brother, and much too early in Life. Frank (Fat Frank) Ackerman wife called me today to say that Frank past away on May 7. After struggling with Kidney problems for a number of years cancer attacked him in Oct. of last year. I hope you all will take a moment to remember Frank Ackerman, and all our Brothers that have died. Please put out a pray for his wife Diane and his family. Diane stopped working four years ago to care for Frank. Now that Frank is gone, so is his VA check. Diane is having to sell their home before she loses it. If anyone wants to send Diane a card, or any other support, please e-mail me for her address. Peace Brothers, Michael Stapleton The "Deuce" Oct.-67---Sept.68 MESLS@aol.com

VA's Error? What a bunch of crap. If you filed a va claim since 75' your info may be on those discs that were stolen. You can report your name and ssn to the National credit bureaus bye following this link: http://www.equifax.com/siteAssets/productPromos/veteran/veteran_breach.htm Cut and Paste to your browser. Only takes a few minutes with the automated system and it is free for the next 3 months. Hope no one has any problems due to their careless idiots at the VA. I was with the 362 at Fort Lee and sailed to To Viet Nam . I remembEer loading our equment onto rail cars and taking it to Norfolk and loadin it onto a ship headed for Viet Nam. We then flew to Okland Calf and boarded a ship and sailed for Viet Nam. I also remember as we got closer to Viet Nam listing to Hanoi Annie telling us of our sone demise. We arrived in VietNam doarded into a landing craft and came ashore I beleive at Qui Nhon. I was stationed at different places throughout Viet Nam with with the 362 until June of 1966 when I returned home. I remember Gorden Taylor most of all he had a D-7 dozer turn over on him one night at the pit . I ran a front loader I was not ther that night but I knew Gorden very well. We hung out together ar Frot Lee before leaving for Viet Nam. He was in the same tent with me in Viet Nam for a while. He was a great guy. My son went to Washington DC with his Grade school class about 17 years ago and visited the wall and scribrd his name for me from the wall. I still have it some where. I am now 62 years old I remember a LOT OF FACES BUT NOT A LOT OF NAMES IF ANYONE REMEMBERS ME I AM GLAD YOU ARE STILL WITH US AND BE SAFE. Tim SPC 4 362 ENGR. CO. Great site. Just found it today. Like many others, I've spent enough time forgetting, that it's hard to remember. I joined the Deuce March of 66 in the Saigon Harbor while the equipment was still on the ship coming from up north. Spent a year with the unit at Cu Chi, Tay ninh and Dau Tieng. Kentucky (Dwight) Jones was a close friend of mine. Think of him often and the other guys that died at the crusher. It was great to find this site. I do recall some of the names. God Bless

He is also the one to e-mail your pictures to to have them posted. That is how I got mine posted. I left the Deuce on March 14, 1968. I was in Long Binh when TET68 took place. Can Anyone tell me where I can get a 362 Engineer Co. shoulder patch? I am having a shadow box made for my father in-law, Oits Zellers. (Otis Lewis Zellers Jr.) The roster page has middle initial as "I" but it is "L". The box will contain all of the badges and medals earned while serving his Counrty while in Vietnam. I have a color copy of the patch but would prefer a real patch. Not original, just a real cloth patch. Thank you. Also if anyone is interested go to WWW. USMEDALS.COM. (Medals of America) I had them make one for my grandfather before he passed away with all of his WWII medals. He just thought it was awesome. Thank you. Jeff

When most of the unit went to Cu Chi , Some of us were still up in the central highlands and still some on the coast .We were in Korea together and signed up for Viet Nam together but I lost touch .The last time was a week that I came back to Cu Chi. Doing some research for my husband's claim. Trying to find anyone who was at Cu Chi February 26, 1969 when the base was overrun by VC. The VC took out 12 double-rotored Chinook helicopters were taken out by VC saboteurs. 9 were completely destroyed. My husband had to go into the motor pool because an enemy NVA ran in there with sapper charges. There was huge damage all over the base because the NVA came in from so many places. Trying to find anyone who remembers the motor pool incident. My husband's name is Wilbur G. Dickson, Jr. Most people called him "Flip". He was with the 25th Infantry from Hawaii, called up through the National Guard of Hawaii. Found an After Action Report, Department of the Army, HQ, 554th Engineer Battalion (Const), that talks about a ground attack on HOTEL Sector, Cu Chi Base Camp by NVA Forces on 26 February 1969 but National Archives can't locate it. We need help from someone who was on base and can confirm the attack. Looking forward to receiving info. Thank you, E. Kawai

I,ve got many pic's of the TayNinh area including the montangyard kids that we paid a penny apiece for each sand bag that they filled for us' or rat that they killed. Does anyone remember the mike forces that manned the bunkerline with their familys in their bunker. They were Montangyards.

In Oct '04 I posted info of the names of our brothers who were killed at the base of the Black Virgin Mtn....Rock Crusher site of the 362nd ( at that time ). I am suggestion that maybe this Duece site should have some type of Memorial or Page honoring our lost brothers. Any input on this idea would be appreciated.....we do owe them a memorial. Thank you for considering this request.

Just a note for those of you who remember the brothers we lost at the rock crusher site at the Black Virgin Mountain at Tay Ninh. I just checked and found a site at http://the wall-usa.com and you can search for names and dates. Our brothers are listed there. Enter Army and 7 Feb 1967 and they're on the second page. For those of you who have the time to visit the actual Wall, they're on Panel 15E, Lines 5 and 6. I haven't made it to the Wall yet, myself. Maybe in a couple more years, eh? Their names are: Dwight D. Jones, Thomas E. Litherland, John L. Lockwood; all from Support Platoon, all ours. Thanks and take care of yourselves.

Veteran's Day Miracle: After 34 Yrs.,Son Meets Man Who Last Saw Dad Alive Veteran's Day Miracle This is the story of two men and the 34 journey that brought them to cross paths. One, who saw Harry Lauck fatally injured in Vietnam, who gave him first aid, and who medivaced him, was among the last to see Harry Lauck alive. The other, the son of Harry Lauck, had never met anyone who knew his dad in Vietnam or who had information about his service there. This is story of how both agonized over the death of Harry Lauck and spent 34 years seeking anyone who had information on Harry Lauck, and how the two found each other on the internet. For each it is the only contact in 34 years. It is a Veteran's Day Miracle INTRODUCTION On 2 Jul 1970 I saw a soldier fatally injured at Cu Chi, Vietnam. I rendered first aid and helped medivac the man. He died in hospital in Japan 10 days later, never regaining consciousness. On 27 Oct 2004 I met his son. For more than 30 years, I have searched without success for information about this soldier and his family. Likewise the son has spent his life trying to find anyone that served in Vietnam and had information about his dad. Here briefly is the story of how we crossed paths. In the first portion, I will present the back ground, the accident, and my years of searching. Then, in the next portion, Gary Lauck, Harry's son, will tell the family's story and his 30 year search and how I am his first contact with anyone with information about his dad in Vietnam. My portion is decidedly longer because we have emphasized a lot of details of the dad's Vietnam service in hopes that clues will jolt the memories of some who served with him. Gary's portion is far shorter, but in my mind, more important. It tells of a son's determination to find out more about a dad that died serving his country. Before our meeting, Gary's only information was that his dad died in Vietnam, the cause of death, the date, and the unit. With your help, we'll provide more. BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT In early 1970, C Company, 588th Combat Engineers, prepared a forward airfield and refueling site at a very remote site at Datum, RVN, in III Corps. Katum is located about 15 miles north of Tay Ninh in III Corps, 3 miles from the Cambodia. In late March or very early April 1970, elements of C Company, 588th, secretly reinforced the bridge crossing into Cambodia so that would support the weight of an M60 tank or 60 tons. In the first 2 weeks of April, 1970, C Co., 588th led the way as pathfinders in the Cambodian Incursion of 1970. On the Cambodian side of the border, near the Mimot Plantation and the Headquarters of COSVN (the operations headquarters of the NVA for all operations in Vietnam), C Co., 588th cleared and built a forward landing strip and blew out "donut holes" in the jungle for forward LZs. The 1st Air Cav began the air assaults the next day. The 25th Division (the Wolfhounds) and the 11th ACR (Armored Cavalry) closely followed. From early April 1970 until June 30, 1970, these 3 major Army Units, the 11TH ACR, 1ST Cav, @25th Infantry Div, led the raid into Cambodia and captured many enemy sanctuary camps including the COSVN Hq. Sadly, the latter brought great disappointment as it had been evacuated by the NVA a few days before. Ten years later, when General Giap wrote his book, we learned that we missed American POWs by 3 days. The forward air field near the Minot Plantation served as the key to the operation in the field. It was the refueling, rearming point for air assault operations during the 60 days of May and June, when the operation was at its peak. Harry Lauck had only arrived in Vietnam in Late April 1970. Keeping the airfield open was the highest priority mission of the whole operation in that area. It fell upon the shoulders of 2nd Platoon C Co., 588th to get the job done. If any one individual could be cited as the key individual in that mission, it would be Harry Lauck. Although new to the unit, the 24 year old was a highly experienced heavy equipment operator. He was extremely accomplished with the Motor grader. HARRY LAUCK Harry Lauck was an E-4 heavy equipment operator who had arrived in Vietnam only in April of 1970. By fate, it fell upon him to operate the motor grader that planed the runway of that forward airfield in Cambodia. The enemy mortared the airfield night and day. Portable lights had to be fixed on the dirt runway at night, while the repair crew filled the pot holes and refinished the surface. Night after night, with lights on, and mortars landing, the unshakable 24 year old Harry Lauck plowed his motor grader back and forth, up and down the field, rendering it in perfect condition by mornings light. During the day, C130's would "on the fly" roll out 500 gallon blivets of JP4 fuel that would roll to the sides of the runway. Swarms of Slicks and Cobras would alight, refuel, rearm and spring off into the azure sky. Deuce-and-a-halves would convoy in with crates of ammo, discharge them with lightning speed and form a return convoy to go back to Tay Ninh for another run. The airfield never shut down! Harry Lauck groomed it all night long every night, and the most beautiful "flat top" awaited valiant pilots at each dawn. THE ACCIDENT On June 30, 1970, per President Nixon's order, the operation ended. All American forces crossed the "red line" and returned to RVN before the Presidents deadline of midnight. The men of C Co., 588th, returned to Katum, RVN and broke down and loaded up all equipment and supplies. On July 2, 1970, the men of C. Co. 588th convoyed from Katum to their company Area at the Base Camp of Cu Chi, about 45 miles. As the 5 ton dump trucks filled with equipment, supplies, and men, convoyed into the base camp, along the pock filled asphalt roads, the contents in the beds of the trucks rattled, bounced and hopped around As one truck crossed an especially deep rut, a man stood up to secure a fuel can ejected from the rear. He landed on his head. He was unconscious. I rushed to provide first aid. Two Rangers, standing near their detachment's orderly room, about 50 meters away, saw the accident and rushed with and aid kit. One of the Rangers was an E-6 medic. He started Glucose IV and administered Morphine. We called in a medivac helicopter because the man remained unconscious. Otherwise we would have taken him to the hospital/dispensary at Cu Chi We loaded the unconscious man onto a litter, carried him to the Ranger's Landing pad about 100 meters away. A Huey Medivac unit swept in, retrieved the injured man, and medivaced him to Saigon. He remained unconscious. THE DEATH Ten days later, Harry Lauck, never having regained consciousness, died in a hospital in Japan. The men of C Co., returned to their Cu Chi base Camp Jul 2, 1970. They stood down, rearmed, re-supplied, packed it up and set out July 4, 1970 for a 150 day mission at Than Linh Vietnam in a most remote area 80 miles from their Bn Hq. at Cu Chi. Each day, we kept expecting to see Harry walk into camp On July 14, 1970, we received notice to remove Harry Lauck from our rolls. He had died in Japan. A pall fell over the C. Co., 588th. THE LEGEND OF HARRY LAUCK The men had not spoken much about Harry, having expected him to recover consciousness and return any day. Now, each night, after chow, we relaxed, told corny jokes, teased one another, talked about our families and read mail. Inevitably the conversation would turn to Harry Lauck. The introduction to the topic was always the same, "I still can't believe what happened to Harry." Then the men would talk about the nights Harry dodged mortars, how he kept the Cambodian airfield open, about his never complaining, and always sporting a slight smile and good humor. That is how I learned the legend of Harry Lauck. I had come to Vietnam in mid Jun 1970. I was assigned to 2nd platoon C Co. 588th, but all my men were spread out all over Cambodia. I never got to meet all of them until they all returned to Cu Chi Jul 2, 1970. It was pure coincidence that I, coming from another location, stumbled upon the accident involving Harry Lauck. I had never before met him or seen him. I did not know he was from my platoon until later that day when I met with the platoon in mass for the first time. And I only learned about the legend of Harry Lauck from the men of my platoon who served with him, and who grievously missed him, and who painted such a wonderful picture of his legendary service in the Cambodian Incursion. When we heard of Harry's death, we asked about taking up a collection for his wife and kids if he had any. But everyone in the Company was certain he had no wife or kids. I never learned otherwise until 34 years later. Harry had told the men that he was not married. The fact later learned, was that Harry's marriage had failed, and heartbroken, he joined the Army to put the past behind him. He never discussed the heartache with the men, it was too painful. But Harry, unbeknownst to us at the Company level, had on his Army personnel documents taken care of his 2 boys and their mother. The family did get the Veterans benefits. I TRIED TO PURGE MY MIND OF VIETNAM AND THE DEATHS Harry Lauck was our last casualty in 1970. C Company deactivated in Nov 1970, and I went on to the 69th Engineers, where I saw 4 more deaths. At the end of my tour, I tried to purge the name Lauck and every name of the dead men from my memory. I tried to forget. I never spoke of my Vietnam experience. But despite my best efforts, I thought of those men everyday. I did succeed in forgetting Lauck's name, but I never forgot him. Beginning around 1990, I started trying to re connect with Vietnam Vets. I tried to find any information on the men I saw die. I remembered 4 of the names but not Lauck. I tried to get a list of casualties by company, it was not available. I searched by date of casualty, but I associated Lauck date with the deadline to leave Cambodia, July 30, 1970. I forgot that the men stopped in Katum for 2 days on the way from Cambodia to Cu Chi. The accident was in fact Jul 2, not June 30 as I had best tried to recollect. I knew Lauck died 10 days after the accident, so I search for 10 days after Jul 30, 1970; which was July 10th. Still no hits. For the next 14 years, I hit every web site that had anything about the 588th; but never found a soul that served in C Company with me. On the 27 Oct 2004, I stumbled on to a posting describing a death of a soldier in C Company 588th Eng; the accident occurring Jul 2, 1970. I knew it had to be Lauck, because Lauck was the only casualty after May 1970 in C Co. But the posting was from a son. I knew Lauck had no wife or kids. I decided to get to the bottom of this. It was either a son of Harry that I never knew about or an imposter who was about to get a very unpleasant visit from a 58 year old, overweight Vietnam Veteran, who was a little over the edge. MEETING THE SON OF HARRY LAUCK So I responded, and said I saw a man suffer a closed head injury on Jun 30, 1970 in Cu Chi, that died 10 days later in Japan, might this be the man. The son sent me copies of the telegrams notifying the family of Lauck's death on July 2, 1970 while in C Company 588th. It described the head injury in detail. I knew no one in C Company had a head injury but Lauck in 1970. There were no other deaths after May 1970 in the C Co., 588th other than Lauck's. It was a match!! The son and I then exchanged great information and phone calls and it became clear why we in the field with C Company had no known about Lauck's wife or children. Lauck had separated with his wife and didn't want to discuss it. The Army Personnel system did know and the family did receive the proper insurance and vet benefits etc. So, this is the end of a 30 year plus journey that began with my coincidentally happening onto a horrible accident that fatally injured Harry Lauck and ends with my October 27, 2004 meeting his son on the internet. Now, I will turn it over to the Son, Gary Lauck Gary, first of all, we thank you as a career active duty Navy Helicopter pilot with 16 years. Thank you for serving our country. And we thank you and your family for your dad's service and sacrifice in Vietnam as well as your Step dad's Vietnam service. No family has given more to our nation than yours and we honor that. On behalf of the Vietnam Veterans on this site, let me add last thing. As a son of one whose name is on "The Wall", you are our son. Welcome Home Alright son, take it away THE SON'S STORY GARY LAUCK Wow, how can I possibly follow that introduction? Thanks for the kind words, Tom. Please forgive me if I dont have as much to add but my story is pretty simple. My dad died in Vietnam when I was four years old. To be honest, I cant remember anything leading up to that time (I guess most people do not recall what they were doing when they were three years old either). All I can recall from the beginning is life with my mom, step dad and two brothers. While growing up, my dad was really never mentioned, and I didnt bring it up, and to this day, I cannot remember why exactly that was. My first vivid recollection of wanting to really know about him happened when I was about 17 years old. I was walking down the street in my hometown, when a man pulled up from behind me in his car. He stopped me and asked me if I was Harry Laucks kid, and I replied yes, and asked him why he stopped. He stated that as he saw me walking from behind, that I was the spitting image of Harry, being the same size, and walking with the same gate. That is the first time that I can remember really wanting to know about my father. I never saw a picture of him until several years back, and noted that I definitely inherited his good looks (smile). I always thought that someday I would try and locate someone who served with him in Vietnam, though it did take many years, as Navy life can be pretty busy. I finally found some time and energy to peruse some Vietnam websites in February of 2003, and posted a message, listing my fathers unit and asking to hear from anyone who knew him. As time went by, I gave up on the idea that someone might answer the posted message. Fast forward to October 27, 2004. I am currently attending the Naval War College in Newport, RI and was just finishing up my elective in my second trimester at school. Ironically, the elective was on the Vietnam War, and that very day, I gave a small presentation from an interview with my stepfather, who also served in Vietnam. Imagine my surprise at receiving Toms email the very same day. I actually did not see it until the following Monday, and more ironically, I almost deleted it as I did not recognize the email address, or the title mentioning Cu Chi (I didnt know my dad was stationed there). I actually thought it was from a fellow student from my class, who was sharing some interesting tidbit with the rest of us. You can imagine my surprise on reading the note from Tom. The rest of the story has already been told I would very much like to hear from men who served with and knew my father. The information provided by Tom so far is wonderful, but I know there has to be more out there somewhere. My dad has several warm and wonderful brothers and sisters, and I am sure that they would love to hear about him also. Thanks for taking the time to read. Sincerely, Gary Lauck, LCDR USN GWLauck@aol.com Tom Pardue, Vietnam Vet 70-70 ThomasPardue@msn.com Vietnam Veterans: You're welcome to comment or give Gary info about serving in Vietnam in 1970. Gary would very much like to make contact with anyone who knows about or served with his dad, Harry Lauck, E-4, C Company, 588th Combat Engineers, who died July 12, 1970 of injuries suffered in Vietnam July 2, 1970. Thanks for Serving.

I'm Tom Pardue I was in C Co., 588th Combat Engrs in 1970 I need help on two things. First, I used to communicate on the 588th board frequently. It went dead about 4 years ago. Is it just my PC or is it now dormant 2nd, I've got the Agent orange crap I guess. I got on the registry years ago, but I fractured my skull in 2002 and they're testing for some neuro things that they thing are Agent Orange related. PNS Is there a good service rep or atty in Houston that can help push a claim through. I'm already 10% disabled service connected but they're going to expand that I guess. I've also got a PTSD claim that's in appeals 1st year (I hear it takes 3). But I'm going to have to get a lawyer or service rep or something because my brain is so FU now that I can't rmember who to call or what buttons to push to keep it moving. They accepted the combat exposure on My PTSD with no fuss. I guess the mos, the unit and location was familiar to them. There's alot of our guys showing up at the VA now. So we got to stick together to help each other in the system. Tom

Hi Guys, Retirement in the Philippines is the only way to go. Here is my home page url, click on "My Home" and you will see what $237.00 a month can get you here. http://groups.msn.com/RichardDiVely I am currently back in the U.S. to arrange some shipping but will be back "home" on May 1st 2004. I hope everyone has made that trip to the V.A. and had their sugar checked. War Zone III was a bad ass place and it is still a killer, don't wait, get it done now. My best to all of you.

Well, after a year today I received my 100% disability. They took some of it back to 2002 when I was awarded 40% for this Type II Diabetes then the guy that filed the new claim did what he called a "piggy back" claim taking the 40% to 60% and then 100% in one filing. I will now be moving to Cebu, Philippines where the exchange rate is currently 50.25 to $1.00. With Social Security and the V.A. I can be as close to being a millionaire as I will ever get. I will remind you guys again that Agent Orange is a bad mother, get checked at your V.A. You guys were in the same place that I was! Take care, I will get a new e-mail address to you as soon as I get set up in the "Pearl of the Pacific" LOL

HERE IS A FUN AND EASY WAY TO TURN $6.00 INTO THOUSANDS!!!!!... and it really does work!! STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper: "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service by this. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses: #1) Nick Morehead, 505 Wildwood Ave, St. Paul, MN 55110 #2) Jaclyn Stonwall, 25 West 1450 North Apt#20, Provo, UT 84604 #3) Barbara Kubiak, 419 Claratom Drive, Winston Salem, NC 27107 #4) Lynne Kapovich, P.O. Box 640556, San Francisco, CA 94164-0556 #5) Britney Cunningham, 11217 Barnwall St. apt#125 Norwalk, CA 90650 #6) Michael Geter, 16560 East 104th Place, Commerce City, CO 80022 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there is close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! Now the why part: Assume for: example you get a 7.5% return, which is very Conservative. : 1) when you mail out 200 letters, 15 people will send you: $1.00 2) those 15 mail out 200 letters, 225 people will: send you $1.00 3) those 225 mail out 200 letters, 3,375: people will send you $1.00 4) those 3,375 mail out 200: letters, 50,625 people will send you $1.00 5) those: 3,375 mail out 200 letters, 759,375 people will send you: $1.00. By now your name has dropped off the list, but so far you have received at least $759,375.00!! With an: original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your: name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest: posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is, do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the Internet and reading these articles everyday? JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford: $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... People: have said, "what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the Internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? : Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual Internet. Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work.

i am to say the least at a loss for words......... i happened to be watching 60 minutes tonight, which had a story about vietnam and it finally dawned on me to do a search for the 362nd...... and here you are.... but i am a little emotional and will get back in next week or so and try to put down some words.. i do not remember many names, but some in the roster and postings bring back some vague memories....... my fondest memory is of SGT Streeter, especially with his own personal M-60, M-16, colt 45, M-79, many other weapons of his choice and tons of ammo, gearing up, in his jeep, to take off to some firebase way the hell and gone, past nui ba den(sp) - if SGT Streeter was going to go, he was taking all he could with him...... anyway, ill write more later --- i am disabled by diabetes (minor still) and some brain injuries unrelated to vietnam (i think) --- to all of the duece i say take care and be safe......... tbird

Some guys will be in Kokomo, Indiana this weekend for the big Vietnam Veterans reunion. I will not make it this year as I am already in Florida for the winter. It is all ways the 3rd weekend in September and you need to make reservations if you want to stay on the reunion site. Many are staying in hotels and motels in Kokomo. The reunion site is about 5 to 10 miles out of town at an old air strip that the Howard County Veterans have purchased.

362nd 10/68 to 2/70 Just another few words on diabetes type 2 for all my buddies. A recent study says more dioxins were used in War Zone III and other parts of the Nam than were previously released: The Study......... New Estimate Increases Agent Orange Use in Vietnam58 minutes ago Add Health - HealthScoutNews to My Yahoo! By Adam MarcusHealthScoutNews Reporter WEDNESDAY, April 16 (HealthScoutNews) -- The American and South Vietnamese militaries sprayed much more Agent Orange over Vietnam than earlier estimates suggested, says a new study. That expands by about 1.82 million gallons the amount of Agent Orange and other defoliants used to thin the jungle. Much of this increase is attributed to spraying that occurred before 1965. Until then, the defoliants used had a much higher concentration of a known cancer-causing chemical called dioxin, so the new study doubles the estimate of how much dioxin was sprayed in Vietnam. The researchers, who compared army mission logs and village resettlement activities, also estimate that more than 4 million Vietnamese men, women and children probably were exposed to dioxin in the spraying.A precise accounting of how much plant-killing chemicals were used during the war, and where, could help public health researchers better understand the impact of dioxin, says Jeanne Mager Stellman, a Columbia University chemist and leader of the study."Precisely because it's 30 years later it is very, very important to tell the exposed from the unexposed," Stellman says.Although the spraying is long past, dioxin persists in the environment and is still entering the food supply in Vietnam, says Dr. Arnold Schecter, an environmental health expert at the University of Texas-Houston School of Public Health."The people getting contaminated, whether Vietnamese or American veterans, are more likely to be those who are eating contaminated foods, which we're finding right now," Schecter says. "The spray records are very valuable as a starting point, but the bottom line is: Where does [dioxin] get into people and how high were the levels?"A report on the findings appears in the April 17 issue of Nature. The scientists reached the new estimate using data from specific spraying missions, information that wasn't previously analyzed. The military deployed defoliants from airplanes, helicopters, boats and backpacks.Earlier estimates reckoned that between 1962 and 1971, U.S.-led forces sprayed 18 million gallons of Agent Orange in Vietnam. The Army also sprayed smaller quantities of other "Agents," including Pink, Blue and Purple, to clear the lush region, which included Laos and Cambodia. However, Agent Pink was 100 percent dioxin, so even a small amount could have had serious health consequences, Stellman says.In December 2001, President Bush (news - web sites) signed a bill that presumed for the purposes of health benefits that every U.S. veteran who served in Vietnam was exposed to Agent Orange. The law raised the 30-year ceiling on veterans' claims for respiratory cancers alleged linked to exposure to the herbicide, and it added Type 2 diabetes to the list of diseases associated with the chemicals. Roughly 2.7 million U.S. soldiers served in Vietnam and Southeast Asia during the war years.John Sommer, executive director of the American Legion's Washington, D.C. office, calls the new work "extremely important" for Vietnam veterans. "There has never been a real study of the health effects of exposure to Agent Orange" during the war, largely because scientists haven't had a firm grip on how much of the herbicide was used. Now, he adds, such a study is possible. If you haven't, get your sugar levels tested. I was diagosed in 2/02 and am now on 100% disability due to the brittle nature of this killer. Find it early and fight it!

I would appreciate the photo(s). Don't know if the ambush was Lanyard or ? It sometimes seems like last week. Went to the Viet Nam Memorial at Eagles Nest, NM last Monday...didn't handle it too well. Thought this would get easier. VA shrink appt. tomorrow. 33 years and it still sucks...wish i could handle it as well as some others seem to be doing. The site here is a blessing though.

Bert, glad you got the patch. I've not been to the wall but have been to the moving wall a couple of times. I try to make it to the HIGHGROUND memorial in Wisconsin at least once a year. It is peaceful and lets me think about the lost friends. Take care over the weekend . Your Duece brother, Terry

Hey Brothers...Duece , spring summer '70 then went to 46 Eng. BN. Don't know where to start. I've spent years deliberately forgetting the things that creep into dreams. But have recently tried to remember the things that I wanted to forget. I can't remember names but remember 5 ton dump that was shot to shit after completing a mine sweep. Was running grader on that road...don't remember the names of the kia's that day. Remember a guy named buggs back at Cu Chi. Spent a week there. Remember 290 operators firing off m-79 grenades my direction while grading. Grading a airstrip near Tay Ninh and having a Shithook(Chinook) almost landing on my position...Rambling....anyway during Duece deactivation sent to 46th and was shot up shortly thereafter...Medivac to Long Binh and US. As advertised...we split up his stuff...don't have but a few pics. Now...VA disabled 80%...guess that spray stuff really did suck. Going to the Red River Viet Nam Memorial Day run to reflect and cry? I don't know

Bert, I don't think that the patches are available. The ones I have I picked up while with the Duece in "69" & "70" and where to be submitted for authorization but I never heard if it was authorized or not. I was surprised to see the patch on this site when I found it. I'm looking for info on what the symbles mean. I know the 290 was for the eqipment and I believe the flower was for Korea but can't remember or who put it together.

In responding to Ken Ecks recent message- Ken, I attempted, without success, to E mail you at your listed address. Just wanted to say hello. I viewed one of your past messages as well and it was obvious that we were at the mountain at the same time. I don't recall having met you, however, I always worked on the hill outside the compound and spent most nights in bunker 4 so I guess I just wasn't having contact with many of the others. Crazy glue, I'm sorry you feel that the 62nd was not a good unit. I for one served with 3 different units and all were good units. I served with the 362nd the longest and it wasn't a good unit. It was a GREAT unit!! A unit is and only will be good by the men and women who serve in that unit. If you are not part of the solution you must be part of the problem. Please, the next unit you are in, whether it is cevilian or military, become part of the solution that makes it a good unit or find another group to join.

Also when the quarry operation left that site about Nov.1969 I, stayed in Tay Ninh province until I DEROSED back to the World in about Mar 1970. Maybe my message on the " DEUCE" site will encourage someone to log on. See you later Ken Eck

I wasn't with the 362nd, but alot of your guys worked with us out at the mountain. I was there with the 544th from Feb. 69 until about Nov. 69 when we moved to a new location that wasn't nearly as active as the mountain was. I have read quite a few of your messages regarding service at Nui Ba Dinh and have enjoyed them all. I recall having experienced many of them right along with you. My servive with the 544th was all as a member of the demo squad and I recall working with men from Tay Ninh, so I'm certain that I've had contact with some of you. I'll be coming back to your message board on occasion and am looking forward to sharing more of our experiences.

Welcome Home Brothers. I have enjoyed reading these messages and have more to go. I was in the Duce in 68 and was best friends with Dave Gunnin. Dave moved to Calif from Rockford ILL. when we got out and still lives here today. I have tried to email Frank Ackerman with no success. I have a picture of him and three others including me that I wanted to pass along to him. If anyone has his current email address please shoot it to me. IM sure Frank would enjoy the picture. I operated a 290M scraper a Rome Plow and a Cat 12 Grader. I left Tay Ninh in Sep of 68. Was any one of you there when the C130 got shot up and while on fire crashed on the Tay Ninh runway. We broke it up with Dozers and buried it right along side the runway. Took the big life raft and used it as a swimming pool.

hi guys, it's me Cowboy, some of you will remember Richard Vejar and myself. We were 290 opperators in 70. I can't remember some names myself, however I do remember that filling that I sometimes had when it seamed that our country had forgotten us. Now we send our young to fight for the vere servivale of this nation. And already the peace marchers want to turn this nation aganist our Armed Forces. America did not realize what they were doing to us, yet we do know. And I hold it to be our responsiblity to support our brave men and women that now risk their lives for us. Weather you agree with this war or not, Let's not punsh those who are willing to put their lives in danger for this great nation. I plan to march in washington in a show of support for our soldiers sometimes before Christmus. I know what you guys have gone through for this nation and you are tired. You have paid the price and want war no more. Yet would it be too much to ask that a few of yall join me is a show of support for our military people. I would wish for enough, that we could carry the DEUCE collors in front of our nations capital that all the American Soldiers around the world, know and understand that they are not forgotin . If you would come but can't make it, then send your picture and I will carry it. If you would come but can't march, then we will borrow jeeps and trucks from the army. I leave you with the memrow of us on the burm line, thinking about the world, and that empty filling in our guts.. anyone that would walk with me, then please e-mail me and lets get going.

Greetings to one and all, it has been a little while since I last fired of a message to all of you. I guess this e-mail applies to those of you who were in the duece in April 1968. I am looking for information and any photos that any of you might have that will confirm my wounds from shrapnel. While pulling guard duty on our bunker line at Tay Ninh base camp, we were hit by a couple of 122 rockets. Lucky for use they were poor shoots. I was outside of the main bunker during the attack and was hit by a small peace of metal. The next morning the doctor at the 588th med. station cleaned the wound out and stiched me up. My problem is like that of many vets, poor record keeping. I have invistigated the records from the medical station, morning reports from the duece and the 588th. No help. I need you guys to pick your brains and old photos that show my chest all taped up. I worked in the motorpool so it wasn't hard to miss that big white tape and over a very durty body. Give me a call at 253-939-8617 collect if you remember any thing. I am trying to prove my claim and all I have left is you guys Thanks Bruce

hey deuce brothers. Does anybody recall the days in Tay Ninh. like at the quarry at the base of that mountain, or lz carolyn, or Katum. well that was a long time ago. Like about 32 years ago. I do remember that, except the names of some of the men that I spent time with in that place. Today is the aniversary of the day that I' was hit at the Nui Ba Den. I'm sure that that doesn't mean shit to the most of you. The fact is that there were some of us that rememeber that day.I'm sure that should be the day that we should forget everything that ever happened for that whole year.I'm suprised that nobody talks about the situations that we endured in those places on this web site. I was wounded on this day way back then and I will never forget that. If anboddyremembers those days back at the Nui Ba Den quarry, or the days building the PSP airstrip at LZ Carolyn or at Katum building the dirt air strip in 1969 and 1970 I, would like to see your messagge on this web site. ps if anyone of you were at the Black Virgin Mountain Quarry on Sept. 5th 1969 please log on. To the guys that know me hello again, to the ones that don't I was in the Nam from June 1968 to February 1970 and with the Duece all of that time. We were on many operations during that period. We were also exposed to Agent Orange. War Zone III was the heaviest sprayed area in Nam. Type II Diabetes is now a service connectable disability as some of you know. I came down with it in February of 2002, 32 years after getting back to the world. I am now on 40% disability as a result of this exposure and the % will climb with my ongoing eye problems that is associated with type II. Go to the VA and have your sugar checked. We are facing another enemy, this one we can't shoot back at. Don't kid yourself and don't wait to get this done. I lost 30 lbs in 2 months and had a reading off the scale when I finally went; I damn near died. Take care of yourself and Welcome Home. Rick

Yes Gary it was me that came back and said I had gone after the medics. If hadn't been for Deyo and Newcomb being in front of me I would have the one that either got killed or injured. I remember those days sitting in line for the convoy to role only to head back for the 79th area. I was a driver for one of the 3 Lowboys from the deuce and I believe I hauled blade for the D7's back to Tay Ninh.

I can remember someone coming over to the ditch now that you mentioned it while Mack Stout and I were there with Deyo and Newcomb. And I vaguely remember that person saying something about having gone for the medics. Did not remember it was you until I saw the post. That is slowly coming back. You must have also been there in the convoy to get the D7 tractors for the mountain? Were you driving or riding shotgun? I was scheduled to take Deyo's truck back up to Tay Ninh and can remember lining up for the convoys many times only to go back to the 79th's camp. After a week or 10 days there, the maintenance warrant officer decided I needed to get back to Tay Ninh quicker so he arranged a chopper ride back to Tay Ninh for me. I visited Deyo several times as well in the hospital in Long Binh as well before he was medivaced out. Ever get any word on him? Yes, I would like to see the pictures of the ditch and foot bridge.

The "Lloyd N. Willis" from the '67 morning report is me. I was in the Deuce from Feb. 66 through November 67. I came to 'Nam with the 299th Engineer Bn and was sent TDY to the crusher site near Qui Nhon to cross-train on the Unit 10-ton crane..... Aw, shit! I almost fell out when I stumbled across these pages. We left Qui Nhon I think in Jan '67 by LST (Korean) and moved to Cu Chi where the 25th ID HQ was. If I remember right, the Deuce was attached to 588th Engineer Bn there. I was in Support Platoon from the beginning at the crusher site. Remember the laterite pit at Cu Chi and the night shift? Anyone remember the ... oh, yeah, Smith was his name. An SFC (I think) anyway took over as First Shirt and was chewing out four of us in the hot sun and fell out from the heat. heh, heh. Tay Nihn, Sui Da, the platoon of us that were attached to Company C, 588th at the 3d Brigade, 4th ID (later 3d Bde, 25th ID). I ran the asphalt distributor trailer for a lot of that time after Cu Chi. Was there when our crusher site at Black Virgin Mountain was attacked and Jones(the blacksmith) and Tom Little(Alkie) .... and others I don't now remember damnit! ... were killed. Oh, God, guys. It's good to find this site and I'll come around from time to time and post and read and cry. Willis, Lloyd W. RA 16825291, Specialist Four, U. S. Army (Want to laugh? Gary, I was in the ditch with Deyo and Newcomb when a ran to get the medics. When I got back I believe you were there. I was asked to go with somebody the next day to help identify Newcomb. I aslo visited with Deyo in the hospital before we headed back for Tay Ninh. I have a picture of the ditch and little foot bridge where Newcomb died.

Hi to everyone who served in the Deuce, I did not know this site even existed until I stumbled onto it today by accident and have spent most of the evening going through the roster, messages and pictures. I was in-country from Sept67-Sept68 in Maintenance platoon for first 5 months and then at the rock quarry at Nui Ba Den, again in maintenance, for the last 7 months. Bullwinkle was Bobby Brigdes, I believe. Always hated to wake him up when I had CQ duty. The low boy driver hurt in 68 TET offensive was Daniel Deyo. I was TDY to Long Bihn with that convoy to get new D7 tractors for the quarry. Larry Newcomb was KIA in same attack. Mack Stout and I were the first ones to find Deyo and Newcomb when the rockets stopped and stayed with them until the medics came. Visited Deyo in hospital in Long Binh until he was medivaced. I looked at the roster closely and recall many names and a few whom I remember real well. Besides those already mentioned: Fred Aldrich, Frank Ackerman, Geopge Brazel, SGT Belton, Sgt Curry, Jim Hahn, Ron Harrell, Wes Jaspering, Dale Rood, Ron Ross, Ken Sudduth, Pat Trout, Otis Zellers. Also remember Hilderbrand who could have doubled for Conway Twitty and sang as good. Does anyone remember the name of the SP4 who got his leg broken out at the quarry and was medivaced out of country, probably early sommer of 68? After seeing all the pictures, I will see if I have any that I can scan and share I would be interested in attending a reunion if someone has information on them. Looks like there is something in Kokomo each year? Anyone gets up north, let me know. Gary Taylor

We all have a lot to be thankful for this year, in spite of the attack on our country a couple of months ago. We still have this great country that we fought for and the FREEDOM that we share because of the tradition that the few of us put our lives on the line for. Now there is another generation of brave men and women giving all they have to preserve the ideals that we as the American Nation must protect. Thank God for them. I' only pray to my god for peace in this world where there is only uncertainty. Hopefully we can find a way to keep this earth safe for all. this is my thanksgiving prayer. Ken Eck i

Sorry if I failed to mention of our recent National problem Kenneth, but we did discuss them. We are not blind of what was going on at the time of the reunion, but we also realizec that at our ages we were not going to be called back. We also discussed the future fate of our sons and daughters who are presently serving our country and prayed for them then and still to this day. I also hope and pray that those in the Guard and Reserve units serve when called up and don't run and hide like some did during Dessert Storm/ Desert Shield. I din't figure out that I was an American on the morning of September 11, 2001. I have been flying my FLAG since I got back from Vietnam and it stays up until it has to be replaced! I'm glad to see that Kenneth Sudduth and all of you had a great time at the the DEUCE reunion. Now it's time to discus contemporary matters, like the attack on our country in New York city and the pentagon. I's that so far away from our memory that it wasn't even mentioned in your message. We must stand tall again for our country if for no other reason, because we did it in our past. The most important thing to me is that our son's will be at these reunions in their future. I'm very proud of what we did to support our country, and I just pray that our Son's and Daughters can have the oppertunity to go to a reunion somewhere and talk about preserving FREEDOM like we did. GOD BLESS AMERICA. thank you very much. KEN ECK

Made a mistake on last message. There were 4 Deuce members present. Myself, Ken Sudduth, Phil Suzuki, Fred Aldrich and Dwyane Shaver. We had a good time talking about old times and what has happened since Nam.

To Jim King from Georgia, I'm glad to see that someone noticed my message about the Deuce's quarry operations in Viet Nam during the years of 1969 and 1970. Actually I' was originally attached to the 544'th engineer CO LE from about April until November 1969 at a quarry at the base of the NUI BA DEN mountain, or as it was called the black virgin mountain until it was moved to XUAN LOC. At that time I' was transfered to the the 362 nd engineers also based out of the Tay Ninh base camp, but also attached to the 588th engineer batallion. How do I' remember all that I' don't know. From there we were involved with rebuilding LZ Caroline, a psp metal landing strip and fire support base, and then we moved to Katum, which was a 5'th Special

forces camp near the the Cambodian border to upgrade their dirt airstrip and camp. All I' know is shortly after I' left that place, about late March1970 my unit and US invaded Cambodia from that area and I' m glad to be a survivor from that part of history. If anyone outhere has anything to add to my story please jump right in. I check out this web site all the time and I' would be like to here from anyone who can add to this.

July 24, 2001 I, felt that I, had to leave a message to my friends that I, served with in Viet Nam with the 544 th and the 362 nd Engineers at the base of the Nui Ba Den and LZ Caroline And also Katum, during the years of 1969 and 1970. The only names that I, remember are Ron Hampton(spider man) and Mike Lynch.I, hope that the spelling is correct.

My biggest memory from the seven months at the rock quarry, asphalt plant and general hell was the long nights, and even longer days in the shadow of that supposedly sacred mountain. You have to understand that even though our government had an agreement that we wouldn't bomb that sacred place, the VC operated a hospital in the caves on the Ba Den, and Nui Cau which was a smaller saddle towards the west. So here we were,. a small compound, Providing construction materials during the day and watching rockets being launtched at the Tay Ninh base camp at night, not to mention the mortar fire and sniper rounds that we dealt with.I, remember a couple of memorable nights, like the night that the asphalt plant burned to the the ground, and the couple of nights that the arc lights hit Nui Cau to rout the NVA out of the hospital and tunnel complex that they had up there.

After the quarry operation moved to Xuan Loc, around december 1969, I remained in Tay Ninh Province, upgrading the road,( Ithink it was TL 4) to Lz Caroline. Then we reopened that fire support base and added a metal landing strip, big enough to handle C 130's. After a short stand down at the Tay Ninh base camp we fixed up the same road that led to Katum, a little special forces camp on the Cambodian border.I, can't forget to salute units from the 11th Armored cav. regement and elements from the 25 th infantry division for keeping our but,s alive while we were doing our job. Katum was an experience in it's self. Our mission was to upgrade the existing dirt strip to, support the invasion into Cambodia. Unfortunatlly the Army didn't inform the 588 th engineer Batallion of that. Hey back then who cared. All I, knew then was I, was getting real short. Like about three weeks short. To make a long story "short" I, got bit by one of those ten pound rats and got my dose of rabii shots. Idon't think any of the men in the Deuce knew that within a couple of weeks the next move was to Cambodia, but i DEROS'd probably two weeks before that became history.

If anybody reads this, please leave a message. I, haven't talked to anyone who I, served with. I, came back to the world about April 25'th 1970. Good talking to you bro's. Ken Eck

I was stationed in the deuce from 3/67-3/68, started out on a grader in Dau Tieng working on roads in rubber tree plantation, next work around Tay Ninh on various equip, then attached to the Big Red One on a rome plow, next back to Tay Ninh an operation on the back side of Nui Ba Din was driving the entrenching machine that hit the land mine destroying said equip, yea!after this went on several runs to Long Binh/Saigon most w/o consent, next operation was to Katum to build SF camp/airstrip. Operated roadgrader a few days, but mostly drove dump truck, to include day of ambush my truck was near the rear so got to see a lot of what was going on. The truck directly in front of me carried the 1st Shirt, that was shot up, also the driver can't remember name, Shortly after returning from this op I was sent back to the world. If anyone remembers any of these events me or anything remotely related, give me buzz.

Hello everyone, When in Nam I was a Pennsylvania boy with the 362nd from October 68 to February 70. While going through the pictures I noticed one of the motor pool. The second guy from the left is Brewster Cox. (the skinny one) I have never met anyone since Brewster that I can say drank like him! He could really put it away. Nice guy that would do anything for you. He once scrapped a D-7 by putting metal shavings in the oil because it had turned over and killed Mike McGovern. Mike was stoned and tried to cross cut a loader site. It was too under cut and Mike flipped it. His boots were blown off his feet. I was working on a pad for the Black Horse and by the time I got to the site that was all that was left, the boots.

Ron, do you have any pictures of your self that you can put out? I'm sure I know you because besides working in the motor pool and driving I also did time in that little barber shop. Which hooch were you in when in base camp?

Iwas with the deuce April 68 to Jan 70 spent a lot of time as shootgun on the wrecker 5-ton type. worked with a lot of operators to pulll P.M. and maint. on equipment. I did a short strech at group to get ( steal) parts and equipment. Any one remember me, fire one back. It would be good to here from you.

Ron; did you smoke cigars. I have a picture of the Deuce wrecker driver in late 67. I also left the Deuce in March 68. I will try to get it loaded and send it to you, but it might be a few days as I still have trouble scaning pictures to the right size.
