Ellen and her children went by ship from FL to Huntsville TX about 18 97 to Ellen's brothers, Lundie + Sam !1900 census, Freestone Co., TX, pct 2 In fall of 1898, after Pleasant was in prison, Ellen sold their hom e in Florida, received $100.00 down payment. With the money, Ellen and ch ildren went to Texas by ship around the Gulf of Mexico. They went to Ellen' s brothers, Samuel + Lundie AYRES, in Freestone County TX. Ellen received two pa yments on their home. That was all. She washed clothes on a rub board for a l iving. Pleasant died in prison of typhoid fever + Pneumonia from working i n the sulphur mines.spouse: Bowles, Pleasant Green or Cope (1863 - 1898)Ellen bought 160 acres of land in Freestone County. Mother of Pleasant, Lonia Delpha MERCER BOWLES came to Texas from Flo rida, after the death of Pleasant in Nov of 1898, she came in the spring o f 1899 to live with Ellen and help care for children. When Grandmother Lonia De lpha, told the family that their husband + father had died, grandau Ellen coul d not believe it and would not stop crying, she was crying by the gate, Gra ndma gave Ellen a purse she had knitted on the ship. It was about 10" lon g by 2" with a pull string, with 2 ten dollar confederate and a sheet of p aper that Pleasant G. had used when he was working on the railroad, and i t had his name printed on it. Ellen later gave it to her daughter, Franki e Lee KNIGHT. Lonia Delpha gave the other children Confederate money tha t had belonged to Pleasant, and sheets of the same paper.
Ellen, Lonia + children moved to Goree, TX, and later to Seymour TX . In Seymour, Ellen married W. H. BURNS, they were together for some reaso n, only 5 months, Ellen and W. H. were divorced in Seymour TX. He is also buri ed at Thornberry Cemetery, in Wichita County TX.
