Migrated from Port of Bremen Germany 13 Apr 1873 to Ellis Island, New Yorkspouse: Schrieber or Sraibr, Magdalena (1835 - 1901)
City, NY 8 May 1873.
Josef swore his allegiance to USA Feb 1876. In the old country, Josef
was a flour miller and owned a team of horses(rare then). Josef rented a farm
which had a house on the property; the family lived here for about 2 years.
The house had a chimney which was made of mud & branches. This was a style of
building used in the sout at that time. Mud was always falling into their
food. Probablely everyone in the family was happy to leave their first house in
America. The tax records of Fayette County, TX, in 1875, list Josef as Josef
WASHCK with 3 cows valued at $25 & one poll tax. He paid $1.12 in state taxes
& $1.19 in county taxes. By 1878, Joseph owned 1 horse, 16 cows, 6 hogs & 1
carriage, also owned 137 1/2 acres of land for a total value of $800. The
acreage was in 2 leagues. Larger part was in the W. A. Hall grant & the
smaller was in the Anna Powell grant. By 1884, Joseph owned approximately 235
acres. In that year he paid taxes on 2 carriages, 5 horses, & 15 cows. His
total worth was recorded as $2550. Joseph remained a tiller of land, stocked a
few hogs in his 1st years of farming in Texas. They were valued at $2 per
head, so Josef quit keeping them. He never ran more than 30 cows. He always
had horses & a vehicle for transportation. This could indicate Josef planted
crops for a living. The property on which the family lived was at the edge of
Ammannsville TX. Josef & Magdalena were god parents for many children. Josef
Vacek together with Peregrin Fiser & Theofil Heller donated 11 acres of land to
the church in 1889 for a church & cemetery.Title -

Joseph & Emilie farmed on Barton Creek near Cistern TX, Fayette County. Allspouse: Adamcik, Emelia Amelia Matilda (1882 - 1972)
of their children were born at this farm; most of the children remained in the
area & with their children formed a close knit family. Joseph died an early
death, probably caused by gall stones & what was termed as bilious fever. He
left Emilie on the farm with 5 young girls. After he died, Adolph returned to
his parents' farm to help his mother. The girls helped in the field too. The
families were friendly & enjoyed their community's life. When Joseph was
alive, he liked having company. They attended socials at Kovar Hall, enjoyed
the dances, would stay very late. In the 1990's the family reunions were still
held at this hall.Christening - [date: 1881] [place: Dubina,Fayette,TX]
