MST3K Cast Reunion - Part 2:
A Report on the 2001 Toyota Comedy Festival's MST3K Reunion!

By Dannielle

They next talked about what it was like during the KTMA years and they talked about MST3K ripoffs, which included the one that Frank worked on after leaving MST3K. Frank jokingly explained his reason for working on a ripoff: "I'm a whore", which drew alot of laughter from the crowd and the panel alike!

They did reminisce about their feelings about working on the show. Frank said that "I always tried to remember that I was getting paid to watch TV" and that he felt "it was fun to make a good show that a few people could watch rather than a crappy show that lots of people would watch." Joel stated that "working on MST3K was really fun to do" and he seemed to have mostly good feelings for it.

The next subject was the selling of MST3K items on Ebay. Lizz asked "what was the weirdest thing on Ebay?" and Kevin said that, for him, it was "the Servo head with underpants on it from MST3K: The Movie". Joel made mention that he thought the reselling was a good thing because it was "recycling". The cast members were then asked "what was the hardest sketch to get through" and Frank said that, for him, it was his Mike Douglas impersonation where he says "Daddy, there's a boy outside". He said it took him all afternoon to get that sketch right!

What happened next was (for me) one of the funniest parts of the evening. Suddenly Joel got up from his chair and said "I have to take a wicked pee", whereupon he left the stage for a few minutes. During his time away, Kevin made a motion like Joel was really going out to do a bong, which was hilarious to watch! Frank said that "the sad thing is, is that Joel does it with an imaginary bong"! The crowd was just doubled over in laughter and what really topped this off is that over the speakers, a very audible "watering" sound was coming over - hard to tell if this was a joke or if Joel's mic was really left on while he was...well, I won't go any farther except to say that as soon as the audience heard this, they just roared!

Once Joel returned, they went on to ask each member which episodes or shorts were their favorites. Joel said that he liked "I Accuse My Parents" and the "At The Circus" short. They were then asked "what current movies would you do if the show was still running?" The movies "Pay It Forward", "Town and Country" and "Pearl Harbor" were offered. Frank said that "everyone had come over the his house last week and watched Battlefield Earth" and it sounded like everyone on the panel was desperate to get a crack at that movie!
