Elizabeth Hannel Turner was the daughter of Mary
and John Gainor Turner
who moved to Georgia from Edgecombe county, North Carolina where
Elizabeth was born. She died 11 August 1836 leaving a two-hour old baby
who only lived for 3 days. She was the first wife of Willis Joshua Milner.
When she died he married her sister, Mary Ann Turner. See
Turner information below.
Mary and Elizabeth Turner had three brothers: John
B., Henry and Charles G. John B. Turner left no children and he lived
with Mary Turner Milner. Henry Turner lived in Chambers County, AL, near
Lafayette, and Charles G. Turner lived in Barnesville, GA.

The 1800 census lists a John Turner in Edgecombe
County with the following household breakdown: one male under 10, one
male 10-15, one male 26-44, one female 16-25, and one slave. There is
not a John Turner in Edgecombe after that (although there are some in
NC); in 1820, John G. Turner is listed in Jasper County, GA with the
following in his household: one male under 10 years, one male 10-16, one
male 16-26, one male 45+, one female under 10, one female 10-16, one
female 26-45.
The following is from "Kinfolks of Edgecombe County, NC, 1788-1855":
"Deed Book 21-650 James Turner of Madison Co, TN was an heir of Sarah
(Sally) Pender of Edgecombe County, dec'd., Nov. 1836."
"DB 21-651 John B. Turner of Monroe Co., GA, one of the heirs of John
G. Turner 'late' of Jasper Co., GA, was an heir of Sarah Pender of
Edgecombe County, dec'd., Aug. 18, 1837."
"DB 21-652 Willis J. Milner of Pike Co., GA in right of his wife,
formerly Elizabeth H. Turner, one of the heirs of John G. Turner, dec'd,
was an heir of Sarah Pender of Edgecombe Co., dec'd, July 4, 1837.
"DB 21-653 Henry G. Turner of Pike Co., GA, one of the heirs of John G.
Turner dec'd. was an heir of Sarah Pender of Edgecombe Co., dec'd, Jan.
11, 1837."
"DB 21-654 Willis J. Milner of Pike Co.., GA, in right of his wife Mary
A. M. Turner, one of the heirs of John G. Turner, dec'd, was an heir of
Sarah Pender of Edgecombe County, dec'd, July 4, 1837."
I assume Elizabeth's mother Mary's maiden name was Pender, but found
nothing to prove that. The Penders are a large and tangled family that
can be challenging to research (especially since there are many Sarah/Sallys!)
I could not find any recorded Edgecombe marriages between Turners and
Penders; however, I did find this estate record with the two names
mentioned:
From Estate Records of Edgecombe County, NC, 1820-1850 vol. II by Joseph
Watson:
"Pender, Sarah, inventory and account of sale by Willis Wilkins and
Spencer D. Cotton, exrs., Dec. 29, 1835. Solomon, John, William, and
Martha Pender were buyers. Inventory of notes and accounts due the
estate, Feb. Ct. 1836. Account current with Willis Wilkins, surviving
exr., in which a legacy was paid to Julius Beeman for self and others,
to Charles G. Turner for self and others, and a large account was paid
to the attorney for James Turner. Audit and settlement of account, Feb.
21, 1838."
Josiah Pender, who d. ca. 1823, had a wife named Sarah, but I can't tell
if this is the same person. (No Turners are mentioned in Josiah's will
nor estate record.)
