The question about alternate oil filters for the VN750 comes up more often than you want to know.  John Hembree was nice enough to do a little leg work for us and give us his results.

I spent about a half hour at Auto Zone comparing oil filters and came up with a good one.
It is a Bosch Premium Filter #3323.  It is a little bit longer than the stock filter with exactly
the same O.D. and gasket dimensions.  The gasket is also round like the stock filter and
the filter is black right out of the box.  The internal construction is identical (from what I
could see) to the Mobil 1 filter.

Just for the heck of it I called the Champion Labs technical hotline to get information on
the Bosch oil filter I have installed on my 750.  He confirmed that they do manufacture
the Bosch premium filters.  He stated that they have not tested this filter on a motorcycle,
so he couldn't tell me anything about this particular application.

He gave me the pertinent specs on the filter, which are as follows:

It has an 11-17 PSID bypass valve and an anti-drainback valve.

I could not find the bypass valve information on either a Fram or STP filter that was the
correct fit for a 2000 Vulcan 750.

I was able to find a manufacturer who makes hi performance motorcycle oil filters called
Perf-Form  (www.perf-form.com).  I looked up the filter for a 2000 750 and found that
it is a J-503 (J-503C if you want chrome).

I called Perf-Form and asked them what the bypass valve pressure range for the J-503
was.  He told me that he had never been asked this before and had to figure out where to
find the info. He was really a nice guy and he eventually found the information.  It is exactly
the same range as the Bosch premium (11-17 PSID).

Now I can sleep tonight!!

If anyone is looking for a chrome filter, you now have a source.
