Brig. Gen. Claudius Charles Wilson

Born in Effingham Co., Georgia Oct.1, 1831. Graduated from Emory College in Oxford, Georgia in 1851. Gained admission to the Savannah bar the following year. Wilson resided in Chatham Co. at the outbreak of the war. He entered the Confederate Army as captain of Company I, 25th Georgia Infantry. Was elected colonel of the regiment on Sept. 2, 1861. Wilson's regiment served throughout 1862 at various points on the South Carolina and Georgia coast. In 1863 it was attached to the forces under Gen. Joseph Johnston in the Vicksburg campaign, and following the surrender of Vicksburg was ordered to Georgia. At the battle of Chickamauga Colonel Wilson commanded a brigade, under Gen.W.H.T. Walker, which consisted of the 1st Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters, the 25th, 29th, and 30th Georgia Infantry, the 4th Louisiana Battalion, and Martins Georgia Battery. At Chickamauga he distinguished himself in battle and was recommended for promotion to brigadier general. Wilson was attacked by camp fever at Missionary Ridge and died at Ringold, Georgia, Nov.27, 1863 only eleven days after his promotion was announced. He is buried in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah Georgia
