Cpl. William Thornton
William was born in Tattnall Co. Georgia in 1820. He enlisted in Co. B of the 54th Georgia Inf. in Savannah Ga. on April 21, 1862. On July 30,
1862 William was transferred to the 1st Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters Co. C . Records show he was captured near Jonesboro, Georgia
September 1, 1864 and exchanged with a group at Rough and Ready Georgia September 19 and 22 ,1864. Later William was surrendered to
Brig. Gen. E. M. McCook by Maj. Gen Sam Jones C.S.A. at Tallahassee Fla. May 10, 1865 and paroled at Thomasville, Georgia May 21,
1865. William was married to Nancy ? and in 1840 they were living in Appling Co. Ga. Together they raised eleven children.
