APPARITION
- “The spiritualistic manifestation of a person or object in which a form not
actually present is seen with such intensity that belief in its reality is
created.” It is also said to be the ancient and all-encompassing belief in
apparitions and ghosts is based on the idea that “the spirit of person is
endowed with volition and motion of its own.
Technically,
these images are all accomplished in camera: A lengthy shutter speed, combined
with the model's being in frame for about half of that time period gives her
the transparent appearance. Black and white negative film is utilized for image
capture.
A variety of printing techniques were used to produce the images.
Traditional silver gelatin prints, augmented by selenium toning and acid
bleaching are most frequently employed. I have fallen under the spell of the
so-called “alternative” (I prefer the term “archaic”) prints, to include Van
Dyke, salt, and cyanotype. Perhaps these represent my counter-revolutionary
retort to the Digital Age, as well as my homage to those 19th century chemists
who made photography a reality.
