ANONBY, Iver Gunderson,
Iver was born in Norway on May 11, 1812, from his name, it can be inferred that his fatherıs name was Gunder. Anonby was probably the name of the farm on which his family lived. Iver was most likely a farmer in Norway. About 1840, he married Johanne Solerud in Norway. The couple had six children. Johanne died in 1865 in Norway. At that time, many people were emigrating to America because land was becoming scarce in Norway. Iverıs son Gunerius left Norway in 1867 and settled in Kenyon, Minnesota. He may have been sent ahead to see what conditions were like in America. If that was the case, he probably sent satisfactory reports, for on April 24, 1868, Iver and his children Maren, Olai, Ole & August, boarded a steamer bound for New York. They made their way to Kenyon, where Iver took over the farm that Gunerius had bought. Gunerius was also a stonemason and he erected the ³Old Stone Church² near Kenyon. Iver died in Kenyon on December 3, 1875 without writing a will. The Kenyon farm is described as the northeast quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 15, Township 109, Goodhue County. Iver is buried in the graveyard of the Old Stone Church. Information for this biography from Goodhue County Probate records; Family notes by Johanna Anonby, found in Kyllo farmhouse; Diary of Maren Anonby, translated by Johanna Anonby; Kyllo Family Bible (most of the writing was done in the same handwriting and the same ink, so it was probably copied from some other source); Jay Steinberg. ANONBY, Johanna,
Johanna was the daughter of Gunerius Anonby and Sophie Lien, born on her parentsı farm near Kenyon in Goodhue County on June 10, 1879. She knew her future husband from a young age, because he grew up on the very next farm to the east. They attended Hegre Church together and both sang in the choir. Johanna married Julius Kyllo on December 28, 1898, at Johannaıs farm home. Julius was born on August 16, 1876. He was the son of Peder Kyllo and Kjarsten Romoe. Soon after the marriage, Julius bought Guneriusı farm, and Gunerius bought Sophieıs parentıs farm in Dodge County. Julius and Johanna had seven children. Julius not only farmed, but was active in the local cheese co-op. Julius died on November 18, 1947. Their youngest son, Martin, who was known as Mickey, had just returned from serving in Europe during World War II, and took over the farm. Johanna, who was known as Mum, lived on the farm until she died on June 27, 1964. Johanna had been born in the farm house and married there, she lived in that same house until just before her death, when she was taken to a hospital in Faribault, Minnesota. Julius and Johanna are both buried at the Hegre Church Cemetery. Mickey died on June 1, 1991. After his death, nobody in the family wanted to take over the old farm, so it was sold, after a large farm auction. The new owner didn't want the old buildings, so they were torn down. Now, nothing remains of the farm where generations of Kyllo's lived, farmed and died, except the land, photographs and memories. In the summer of 2001, descendants found, in the middle of a corn field, the last remaining building, the old milk house. From its condition, it was clear that it too, was soon to join the rest of the old farmstead as only a memory. Information from the Kyllo Family Bible (most of the writing was done in the same handwriting and the same ink, so it was probably copied from some other source); personal recollection of some of Johanna's descendants; Goodhue County records. ANONBY, Gunerius Iverson (& Sophia Lien) Gunerius was born in Smaalens, Aremark, Norway on May 28th, 1845, with the name Gunerius Iverson. Gunerius became a stonemason in Norway, but stonecutting may have been causing him health problems. He was told that his illness was life threatening, but possibly the climate in America, specifically in Minnesota, would help to prolong his life. It appears that a recurring theme in the advertising in Europe for imigrants to America at the time, was that Minnesota could be a healthy place to live. Gunerius left Norway, bound for America on June 14th, 1867. He settled in Kenyon, Minnesota, became a farmer, and his health improved. Minnesota must have been a very healthy place, for Gunerius lived to be 75! In America, he took the last name of Anonby, probably the name of the family farm in Norway. He prospered, and the rest of his family also emigrated from Norway. Gunerius' mother had died shortly before he left Norway, and it is possible that he was sent ahead to see what life would be like in America. When the family arrived, Gunerius' father took over the original farm, which was in the southwest quarter of section 15 in Kenyon Township, and Gunerius bought another farm nearby, the northeast quarter of section 22. This second farm is the one that remained in the family for over 100 years. Guneruis married Sophia Lien, the daughter of John Johnson Lien and Anne Rosseth, on July 17, 1877. Sophia was the first child of John and Anne, born in Norway on August 12, 1856, just before they emigrated and settled in Dodge County. In 1898, Peder Gunerius took over his father-in-lawıs farm in Dodge County and sold his own farm to his daughter Johanna's husband, Julius Kyllo. Sometime before 1875, some of the Norwegian immigrants in the Kenyon area wanted to build another Lutheran church. It seems there was some falling out among the members of the current church. They could have built a church of wood, but they wanted something more permanent. They asked Gunerius if he would erect a stone building, provided the rest of the congregation would furnish the stone. He agreed to build it, and the others hauled stone from a quarry some distance away. Gunerius the stonemason erected the building now known as the "Old Stone Church", near Kenyon. The church is still standing, but is not at present the home of a congregation. Guneruis' father, Iver Anonby is buried in the adjacent church graveyard. Gunerius Iverson Anonby was also known by the name Peder Gunerius Anonby in his later life. He was known by both names around Kenyon, but his legal name was Gunerius. Gunerius died on January 15th, 1920, in Kenyon. Pall Bearers at his funeral were Julius Kyllo, Shyler Forland, Ed Ediem, Fred Lien, Ole Vigoren & A. E. Distad. Sophia lived until September 26, 1937. At the time she was living with a daughter in Minneapolis. Both Gunerius and Sophia are buried in the Kenyon City Cemetery Information from the records of Goodhue County, Minn.; Kyllo Family Bible (most of the writing was done in the same handwriting and the same ink, so it was probably copied from some other source); Family notes by Johanna Kyllo found at Kyllo farm home before destruction; Dairy of Maren Anonby; Jay Steinberg; personal recollection of some of Gunerius' descendants.
