KYLJUM, Sigund E., farmer, sec. 12, P.O. Hader.

KYLLO, Julius Richard, Julius was born on August 16, 1876. He was the son of Peder Kyllo and Kjarsten Romoe. No record of his birth has been found, but it is almost certain that he was born near Kenyon, in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Julius grew up on his father¹s farm which was the northwest quarter of section 23 of Kenyon Township. He knew his future wife from a young age, because she grew up on the very next farm to the west. They attended Hegre Church together and both sang in the choir. He married Johanna Anonby on December 28, 1898, at Johanna¹s farm home. Johanna was the daughter of Gunerius Anonby and Sophie Lien, born on her parents¹ farm near Kenyon in Goodhue County on June 10, 1879. Soon after the marriage, Julius bought Gunerius¹ farm, and Gunerius bought Sophie¹s parent¹s farm in Dodge County. Julius and Johanna had seven children. Julius not only farmed, but was active in the local cheese co-op. Julius died on November 18, 1947. Their youngest son, Martin, who was known as Mickey, had just returned from serving in Europe during World war Two, and took over the farm. Julius and Johanna are both buried at the Hegre Church Cemetery. After Mickey died in 1991, nobody in the family wanted to take over the old farm, so it was sold, after a large farm auction. The new owner didn't want the old buildings, so they were torn down. Now, nothing remains of the farm where generations of Kyllo's lived, farmed and died, except the land, photographs and memories. In the summer of 2001, some descendants found, in the middle of a corn field, the last remaining building, the old milk house. From its condition, it was clear that it too, would soon join the rest of the old farmstead as only a memory. Information from the Kyllo Family Bible (most of the writing was done in the same handwriting and the same ink, so it was probably copied from some other source). Juluis Kyllo; b. August 16, 1876; m. December 28, 1898; d. November 18, 1947; personal recollection of some of Julius' descendants; Goodhue County records. Submitted by ksmith22@mn.rr.com.

KYLLO, Peder Peder was the only child of Jossias Pedersen Hegre and Karen Eriksdatter. He was born in Stjordal, Norway on June 12, 1853. Jossias died in 1854, about a year after Peder was born. Karen didn't remarry for several years, until around 1860. Apparently, Peder didn't get along with his new step-father, because he went to live with his father's sister, Randi. She had married a man named Peder Johnsen Kyllo, and was widowed in 1857. She had two sons, John, born in 1847, and Peder, born in 1857. Under the old Norwegian system of patrynomics, Peder's name would have been Peder Jossiasen. The Hegre part of his father's name was probably the name of the farm on which the family worked, or the village they lived in.Randi's husband probably got his Kyllo name in the same way. But in the late 1800's, the Norwegian patrynomic system was giving way to the English system of last names, and Randi began to use the name Kyllo. Randi, her sons, and Peder came to America. Possibly around 1870, when Peder was 17 years old. They spent six weeks at sea on a sailing ship. They all came to Red Wing and settled in Goodhue Township about 1865. Peder must have decided to take the name Kyllo from Randi, probably because he felt little connection to the Hegre or Jossiasen names.  He married Kjarsten Oline Romo on August 2, 1875. She was the daughter of Christoffer Romo and Gunhild Gederaas. She was born February 14, 1859 in Norway. Peder must have felt that he had a stronger connection to the name Hegre, because, as one of the founders of the Lutheran Church built in the very southeast corner of Kenyon Township, he caused it to be named Hegre Church. Peder and Kjarsten had eight children. In 1906, Peder and his wife, along with their two youngest children, which would have been Konstance (Toppi) and Palmer Clarence, traveled to Norway to visit his mother and his siblings. Peder farmed in Kenyon Township until just before he died in Kenyon on May 30, 1908. Information from notes on a genealogy of the Kyllo family, author unknown, that was also found at the farm; also Terje Erik Garberg translated some data from the Selbu ²biggdabok² in Norway. People who had emigrated to America would write back to Norway about births, marriages, deaths, etc in America. This information would be entered in the  ³biggdabok² back in Norway. The Selbu ³biggdabok² said that Johanne, granddaughter of John Johnson Lien, had married J. R. Kyllo. It went on to say that his family was from Stjordal; Goodhue County Probate records and other Goodhue County records; the Kyllo Family Bible (most of the writing was done in the same handwriting and the same ink, so it was probably copied from some other source). Jon Friheim, a relative in Norway, wrote a letter to the Kyllo family in Kenyon in 1986 which contained genealogical information. Submitted by ksmith22@mn.rr.com.
