WHAT DOES KIWANIS MEAN?
During the organization's founding in Detroit in 1915, members then belonged to the "Benevolent Order of Brothers." That name did not set well with the members and a committee sought assistance from an historian and in an Otchipew (Native American) book found the word "Nunc Kee-wanis' which meant: "We have a good time" or "We Make Noise",or under another construction,"We trade or advertise." These interpretations seemed to fit what business men do: they engage in trade and advertising, have fun, and make noise as they become involved in community service. Hence they became "Kiwanians."
