Dewayne Kaufholz Jr (a.k.a. Duke) took an interest
in
playing guitar at the age of 6. He took lessons for
two years and was able to play rhythm guitar and read
chord charts by the age of 7. Also, at the age of 7
he made his first appearance on stage at an elementary
school talent show. Many spectators found it hard to
believe that he was actually playing the guitar at
such a young age. After two years of lessons Duke
began teaching himself how to read music and began
listening to many guitar players including Eric
Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe
Satriani, and Brent Mason. Duke began to get pretty
good at playing lead guitar, but however had a strong
interest in learning music theory as it relates to the
guitar. So Duke began taking lessons from Jerry Sims
of Sims music and continued to do so for three years.
During this time, Duke played with his first band
Young Country. One of the Female singers, Lauren
Lucas, some years later cut a record deal with Warner
Bros. Records. After Young Country fell apart, Duke
along with long time Friend Trey Amick, started a band
called Phoenix. Duke played in Phoenix all the way
through high-school and College. While working on a
double major in Communications and Accounting at
Newberry College, Duke was able to play for several
college functions and his music was featured on Local
Cable Channel 2 programming from Newberry College’s
Video production studio. After graduating Newberry
College in 2001, Duke took a break from music to
pursue his Masters in Accounting at USC in Columbia
SC. After graduating USC, Duke began working as a
Tax Accountant and Auditor for a local CPA firm in
Columbia SC. After being away from music for several
years, Duke received a call from, another long time
friend and former band mate of Phoenix, Wayne Paige.
Wayne told Duke that he had just started drumming with
a great talented band, Trey Harris and The Lounge
Hounds, and they had two guitar players quit and
needed somebody fast to fulfill commits already made.
Duke, gladly welcomed the opportunity to get back into
music, something that had been apart of him for most
of his life.
