Don West- Bass player
Don learned to play guitar watching
his brother, Johnny, play in bands in the early '60s. Don taught himself and began playing bass guitar in rough honky tonks
around Union, South Carolina in 1962. Then the Beatles and long hair hit the music scene, which Don still wears his ponytail
to this day. When psychedelic music came along, he played with The 1886 Spirits of Quaker Cemetary Band. Moving on to
southern rock in the 1970's, he joined with a group from Spartanburg, S.C. called Uncle Hooker. He became good
friends and opening acts for groups like Marshall Tucker, Hank Williams,Jr., and Elvin Bishop. Then he went on the road with
recording artist Toby King and Uncle Hooker, which became The Chocolate Buttermilk Band, and they traveled for years from Florida
to New York playing music, only coming home about once a month. While with Toby (which had 4 great hits recorded!) they were
the opening act and band for singers Al Green, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, Willie Hobbs, and Big Brother (Janis Joplins
band). After leaving the road traveling , he moved to Myrtle Beach in '78 and played locally before returning to Union in
'94. He took a few years off and in '99 started back playing with The House Band with drummer and long time friend, Chris
Mangum. In 2002, The Lounge Hounds called and asked if he would sit in for a Red Cross benefit with Trey Harris and he has
been playing with then ever since. Don says he has finally found the band he was looking for
