District Tournament Results

The Bears will send 9 wrestlers to regionals with a good chance of sending a majority of them to state. At regionals, Othello should continue their dominance of the CWAC, but Ki-Be and Cashmere could do battle for second. Here is how the Bears shaped up at district.

103 - Justin Hunt picked up a pin on his way to a 6th place finish at district. Justin should have a bright future with a little more experience under his belt.

112 - Brandon Ashley recorded a few tech falls and injury defaulted the consolation final. His long awaited battle with AJ Deleon didn't last very long as he got caught in a cradle at the edge of the mat and was pinned in the first round. The battles with AJ have gone both ways, and they could meet again at regionals next week. Brandon will face North champ Nick Ruff in the first round at regionals. Travis Haug did manage a takedown in his battle with AJ and he won two matches as he placed 5th. An interesting note here is that Haug and Ashley each won two matches against the same wrestlers, Bernard of Naches and Guttierrez of Toppenish.

119 - Ryan Corke started the tournament with a pin and then wrestled hard in a 7-4 loss to Edgar Mendez of Connell. He then cleaned up the mat with his next two opponents to take 3rd. I still expect to see him upset someone at regionals. It could be against Ricky Brown in the first round. Kyle Hagins recorded a pin in the consolations and then wrestled to a tough 17-11 loss to Ignacio Castenada of Toppenish.

130 - Jerry Haug gave it a good try against eventual district champ Ernest Guzman of Othello, losing 10-5. In the consolation round he nearly blew a lead to Nic Villanueva before dominating late to win 15-9. Jerry has a good shot at qualifying for state next week.

135 - Ryan Burns won his first match 16-9 and then lost to the eventual champ JD Gomez of Othello. Ryan then qualified for next weeks regionals with a commanding 10-1 win over Jake Nester of East Valley. If he can find a way to beat Martinez of Connell he could have a chance of advancing to state.

140 - Junior Gonzalez was dominating as always. A pin in the first round, a major in the second. In the final against Flores he was never in trouble and recorded 3 takedowns to Flores 3 escapes. His first takedown was a nice throw that nearly got him some backpoints. Junior will probably face Tate Collins of Chelan in the semis at Regionals. That should be a good match.

145 - Tony Chapin wrestled David Rae tough until he was pinned in the second round. Other than that loss, Tony recorded three other pins. His match with Joe Frazier was a good match before Tony took care of him with a pin in the thrid round. Tony will face Levi Parkins of Cashmere in the first round at regionals.

152 - Larry Metcalf wrestled his heart out in his final match of the year against Marshall Smith of East Valley. Larry was leading late before Smith pulled it out for the win. Larry has potential, and if he continues to learn and improve, he could be a contender before his highschool career is over.

160 - Ryan Phipps recorded 2 falls going into his final with Josh Gomez. Ryan didn't back down from Gomez and attacked at the whistle. Though Gomez built a commanding lead, Ryan continued his attack. Josh Cate of Omak will be first up for Ryan at regionals. If he can manage a win, he could be on his way to state. Johnny Rivera finally got some wrestling exposure and lost a tough 12-7 match in the consolations.

171 - Justin Rolland had only one match before the finals, a third round pin of 3rd place finisher Jordan Scott. His match with Lee started off bad from the beginning. Lee built a 3-0 lead, but did little to earn it. A locking hands and a violation for pushing Lee out of bounds spotted Lee two points. A cradle on Rolland late in the match sealed it for Lee. Justin will back for regionals next week and will be ready to regain his spot atop the 171 list. Joseph DelAngel made an appearnce in his first district tournament, and though he lost both matches, he gave it his all.

189 - Justin Mack finished out his highschool career with a dramatic come from behind win against Michael Cuello of Connell. Cuello was leading 12-10 late in the third period when Justin turned him for back points to win the match and take 5th place. Justin may not have had a stellar career, but as I watched Justin over his four years, he always gave 100%, win or lose. He always showed good sportsmanship and he will be missed on the team next year. Thanks for giving it your all Justin.

215 - It's too bad Frankie Ramirez doesn't have another year of wrestling left. With the experience he gained this year Frankie could be a dangerous wrestler next year. As it was, he put up a pretty good fight at district, nearly making it on to regionals. He lost a close hard fought match to Paul Santos of East Valley in the consolation semis. The match went into OT when Santos won it on a takedown off a slipped head and arm attempt by Frankie. Thanks for helping out the team this year Frankie.

275 - It's been a great two years with Ross McDorman wrestling heavyweight for the Bears. The best part of it should come in a couple weeks if Ross takes care of business next week at regionals. With 24 wins this year, Ross has a good chance at setting the Bears all-time season win record for a heavyweight, which is 28 by Louis Espinosa in 1999.
