History of the Street Family of Stoddard Co. Missouri

Our earliest documented Street ancestors are William L. Street and Nancy J. Lee who married in Coffee Co. Tennessee in 1847. According to information gathered from the 1860 Stoddard Co. Missouri census records the family arrived in Stoddard Co. from Tennessee that same year.

William L. STREET, Sr. was born about 1827 in Tennessee  and died March 04, 1864 in Bloomfield, MO Stoddard Co. Nancy J. LEE Street was born about 1828 in Tennessee. And died July 07, 1865 in Bloomfield, MO. They were married 1847 in Coffee Co. Tennessee.

Their children were:

Lawson Lafayette STREET, born July 08, 1851 in Tennessee and died March 04, 1902 in near Bloomfield, Stoddard Co. MO.

Susan M. STREET, born October 15, 1853 in Tennessee and died May 1864 in Bloomfield, Stoddard Co. MO.

Mary Frances Josephine STREET, born October 30, 1855.

Lucy M. STREET, born February 09, 1860 in Tennessee and died May 1864 in Bloomfield, Stoddard Co. MO.

William L. STREET, Jr., born December 17, 1862 in Bloomfield, Missouri and died June 1864 in Bloomfield, Stoddard Co. MO.

William L. Street purchased a land patent in Stoddard Co., Certificate #287, Book J, p. 313 & 314.  He was a member of the Missouri State Guard.  He is listed in the Stoddard Co. Grays book of Confederate soldiers.  His name also appears in the 1st issue of the Stars and Stripes Military Paper,  birthed at Bloomfield, Missouri in 1861.

According to Harold Mead Street’s  recollections of the Street family, some type of epidemic occurred in the Stoddard Co. area and claimed the lives of William L. Street, Sr., Nancy, his wife, and two of the children.  The only surviving members of  the family were Lawson Lafayette Street & Mary Frances Josephine Street. After their parents death, Lawson and Mary went to live with the Terry Poe family where they resided until they married.

Mary Frances Josephine Street married John Whitehead,  November 06, 1872 in Stoddard Co. MO at the home of Terry Poe.  According to Whitehead Family Records in the possession of Ethel Kelly of Dexter, MO, John Whitehead was born April 17, 1837 and died July 20, 1888/89.  His parents were William Ashley Whitehead (born Tennessee) and Elizabeth Taylor (born in N. Carolina).  These records are also the only known source to give Mary Street’s full name as Mary Frances Josephine Street.  I believe that they lived in Stoddard Co, however, I have not checked the census records to search for them.  This information is all I know about John and Mary.

Lawson Lafayette Street married Margaret Elizabeth Poe on  February 17, 1881 near Bloomfield, at the home of Terry Poe.  His marriage record is the only known source to provide his full name.  I do not know much about Lawson except that he was nearly totally blind in 1892 according to a document signed by J.N. Tribble who examined him and reported that he was totally blind in his right eye and had dimness of vision in the other.  Information from family members say that he died of Tuberculosis.

It is interesting to note that three of their four children of Lawson and Margaret "Ma" married three children of N.C. and Mary Jane (Proffer) Chasteen.  There were many double cousins between the two families. Cassius was the only Street sibling who did not marry a Chasteen.

Elsie Everess STREET was born November 12, 1881 Stoddard Co. MO and died December 31, 1958 Stoddard Co. MO.  She  married William "Billy" Oliver CHASTEEN on  July 06, 1898 in Stoddard Co. MO.  He was born June 19, 1879 in Stoddard Co. MO and died April 04, 1975 Stoddard Co. MO.

Lloyd Ancil STREET was born October 20, 1883 Stoddard Co. MO and died June 02, 1968 Stoddard Co. MO.  He married Alma Ella CHASTEEN on January 06, 1906 Stoddard Co. MO.  She was born May 01, 1884 Stoddard Co. MO  and died August 03, 1970 Stoddard Co. MO.

William Terry STREET was born  April 02, 1888 and died September 12, 1943 in Morrison, IL.  He married Minnie Florence CHASTEEN.  She was born September 16, 1886 and died June 29, 1972 Muskeegon, Michigan.

Cassius English STREET was born May 11, 1896 and died June 05, 1978.  He married Blanche H. SUHN. She was born May 21, 1896 and died February 03, 1970 in Kansas City, MO.
