DIXON, William S. DIXON, William S. - Dartmouth, formerly of Sydney, passed away at the age of 76, on March 15, 2005. He is survived by brothers, Frank, Sydney; Harry, Niagara Falls, Ont.; sisters, Ruby Ross and Pearl St. Denis, Sydney; daughters, Ruth Dixon-LeDrew (Paul), Aurora, Ont.; Susan Dixon-Leach (Gary), Montreal, Que.; grandchildren, Erin LeDrew and Darren Usher. He was predeceased by his parents, C. Reg. Dixon and Hazel (McLeod); brothers, Ken, Robert and Roland, and sister, Lee. April 4,2005 Monday Robert C. 'Bob' Bezanson 76, HALIFAX Robert C. ‘Bob’ Bezanson, CD, 76, died suddenly March 31, 2005, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Sydney, he was the youngest son of the late Howard and Gwen (LeCapelain) Bezanson, and had been a resident of Dartmouth for the past 36 years. A graduate of Dalhousie University (BSc) and Nova Scotia Technical College (B.Eng.­Civil). He had been an active member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia for 49 years, serving in many capacities including chairman of the Board of Examiners and longtime chair of the mentor subcommittee. After graduation, Bob worked with Seaboard Power Corporation and the Sydney Steel Division,where he began as assistant chief engineer and was promoted to divisional superintendent in 1965. In 1968, Bob moved to Dartmouth to work with the Halifax shipyards in the construction of the SEDCO Series drilling rigs. From 1978-84, he was with the Nova Scotia Department of Development, before finishing his career in 1993 as vice-president marketing and Development of Canadian Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd . of St. Catharines, Ont. In 1994, he was awarded the APENS service award in recognition of his outstanding service to the profession, and an honorary life membership in 2000. While in Sydney, he was active in the community as a member of the Kinsmen Club, a founding member and excommodore of the Dobson Yacht Club and a member of Christ Church Vestry for a number of years. Trained in military engineering at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack, B.C., he received a commission in the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers in 1950. He signed on with the 45 Field Squadron RCE (M) when it was formed in 1951, becoming commanding officer in 1964. He was awarded the centennial medal in 1967 in recognition of outstanding service to Canada, as well as the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD2), following over 30 years service in the militia. He was appointed honorary lieutenant-colonel of the 45 Field Engineer Squadron (M) in 1994 and Aide de Camp to the lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia, J.J. Kinley, in 1996. He was also a member of Branch 12 Royal Canadian Legion and Atlantic region vice-president of the Military Engineers Association of Canada for six years. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Kathleen (Selbee), Chilliwack, B.C.; daughters, Debbie (Mrs. Don Black), Great Village, Diane (Mrs. Carlo Stilo), Castello Di Godego, Italy, Janet (Mrs. Gary McEwen), Dartmouth; son, Craig, Sackville. He will also be dearly missed by his beloved grandsons,Matthew Black and Harrison McEwen. He is also survived by sister, Isabel James, Toronto. He was predeceased by brother, Howard , sister, Dorothy. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. SECCO, Etalo Anthony SECCO, Etalo Anthony - Antigonish, passed away on May 17, 2005, at his home in Antigonish. Born November 8, 1928, in Dominion, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Silvio and Agniecska (Krystek) Secco. A graduate of Sydney Academy, his B.Sc. (St. Francis Xavier University, 1949) and D.Sc. (Université Laval, Que., 1953) were awarded magna cum laude. After post-doctoral research at Indiana University, he returned to St. F.X. as Assistant Professor of Chemistry in 1955 and was appointed Full Professor in 1962. He was the inaugural winner of the St. F.X. University Research Award in 1992. His teaching career ended in 1994 upon retirement, but he continued research until 1999 at St. F.X. and until 2004 (his last published work) at the University of Western Ontario. He served on national and international committees including the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry; he gave research talks and invited lectures at conferences around the world; he was appointed a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and the American Institute of Chemistry and was a member of Canadian, American and British scientific societies. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Brehaut); children, Monica (Paul Kemp), Salt Springs; Anthony (Loretta), Sydney; Diana (Kyle Troup), The Netherlands; Richard (Mary), Robert (Jodi) and Stephen (Tia), all of London, Ont., and 15 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Agostino. Visitation in C.L. CAMPBELL, Vincent A. "Sandy" CAMPBELL, Vincent A. "Sandy" - 1933 - 2005. Sydney native Vincent A. "Sandy" Campbell, publisher of the weekly Cape Breton Highlander in the 1960's and 70's, when he was also involved with CHER radio, died Friday, June 17, 2005, in Ottawa where he had lived for the past 27 years. He was a former Canadian Press reporter and editor with Mclean-Hunter and Readers Digest. He was a son of former Sydney police chief Vincent Campbell and Viola (MacNeil) Campbell. Surviving are his wife, Gina Ross, formerly of New Waterford; daughters, Jenni and Julia Campbell, Ottawa; Katie Campbell, Halifax, and Kirsteen (Vernon) Wolf, Oregon; sons, Vincent, Portuguese Cove; Colin, Halifax; Jonathan, Berwick; former wife, Andrea MacIvor; sisters, Lexena and Helen; brothers, John, Donald, Stanley, and Brian. Also surviving are grandchildren, Colin and Oscar Campbell, Bijoux Wilcox, Leo and Tlell Wolf, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Anne Marie and brother, Peter. Prior to his long and productive years as a newsman, starting with the then Sydney Post-Record, Sandy worked for a time at the Dosco steel plant and the Sydney works department, where he made lifelong friendships and earned an appreciation of the lives of working people that served him well during his Highlander years as a champion of so many good causes. In recent years, Sandy was very involved with the National Capital Freenet in Ottawa. He spent many happy days at Irish Cove as a young man and continued to visit every summer. The funeral service will be held in Sacred Heart Church, Johnstown on Saturday, June 25, at 11 a.m. with burial to be held after services are complete. JOHNSTON, Margaret JOHNSTON, Margaret - 76, passed away on Monday, October 17, 2005, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Allison and Bessie (Mugford) Russell of Musgrave Harbour, NL. Margie was vigorous and involved. She was an active member of First United Church, having served as an elder for many years, president of the UCW, a former president of the IODE, Right Honourable Vincent Massey Chapter, a fundraiser for worthy causes, a lifelong bridge player and a source of inspiration, joy and comfort to family and friends. Margie is survived by her husband of 55 years, Gordon; sons, Brian (Catherine) Johnston, Halifax, and Robert (Sandra) Johnston, Saint John; sister, Doreen (Fraser) MacKinnon, New Waterford; brother, Fred (Shirley) Russell, Sydney; grandchildren, Kristie, Bradley, Matthew, Colton, and Liam; several nieces and nephews. FULTON, Charles Duncan "Charlie" FULTON, Charles Duncan "Charlie" - 79, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully October 1, 2005, in Scotia Nursing Home, Beaver Bank. Born May 13, 1926, in Sydney, he was the youngest son of the late Lewis and Elizabeth (MacEachern) Fulton. Charlie was educated and worked in Sydney. He moved to Montreal with his family in 1953 where he continued his education and worked until he married in 1960. Charlie and his wife Enid returned to Nova Scotia in 1961. He worked from 1974 until his retirement in 1991 for Stewart McKelvey Sterling Scales as manager of the Corporate Records Department. He was a long-time member of Brightwood Golf and Country Club, and Brightwood Bowling League for many years. Charlie is survived by his wife of 45 years, Enid Lillian; sisters, Kathleen "Kay" Lang, Dartmouth; Irene Watson, Acton, Ont.; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Catherine Louise; brother, Lewis; sister, Geraldine. STUEWE, John Quinn "Jack" STUEWE, John Quinn "Jack" - After a lengthy illness, Jack passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2005. He was born to Bill and June Stuewe in Anaconda, Montana. At the age of three, his family moved to Sydney. Thus began a lifelong love of Cape Breton where he met and married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Townsend. As a young man he was an infantry arms instructor in the army during the Second World War.In Cape Breton during the late 50s and early 60s, Jack was the host of the 'Supper Hour News' on CBC television; he then moved to Port Hawkesbury where he opened, managed and reported from the first office of the Cape Breton Post newspaper in Port Hawkesbury. In 1964, he moved to Halifax and for 19 years served in the provincial government until his retirement in 1985. He was editor of Hansard for the House of Assembly and in the Department of Finance was responsible for public relations, human resources and administration. Jack was involved with Provincial House Credit Union, serving as their president for 19 years. He also served a number of years on the Board of Credit Union Central. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, K.C. Gunn. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley; sons, David (Brenda), Doug (Lyne); daughter, Patty Flynn (Michael); grandchildren, Karla, Matthew, Liane, James, Laura, Anna, Ashley, and Chris; brothers, Bill and Dick; sister, Mel Twomey. He was a great-uncle to many nieces and nephews (Dobbins, Gunns, Townsends and Twomeys) for whom he was also a surrogate father during many of their university years in Halifax. For the last 32 years, he had been a faithful member and devoted volunteer at The Cathedral Church of All Saints, throughout which he served as Sacristan, Dean's Verger, Dean's Warden and Cathedral Warden. Jack befriended many people in need and will be remembered for his kindness and humanity. The family extends thanks to the ICU nurses and doctors of the VG Site, QEII, and Dean Burgomaster for their compassion. A memorial service will be held in The Cathedral Church of All Saints, 5732 College St., Wednesday, October 26, at 4 p.m. followed by a reception in the church hall. WILLISTON, Dr. Johnny Miles WILLISTON, Dr. Johnny Miles - Passed away suddenly at home on December 4, 2005. Johnny was an exceptional person who touched many lives in his 78 years as a dedicated family doctor; a pioneer in health and fitness; an outstanding contributor to the community; and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Johnny was born in Sydney in 1927. After graduating from Sydney Academy, he attended Dalhousie University where he earned a "Gold D" as a member of the hockey, rugby and boxing teams. He moved to New Glasgow in 1956 after graduating from Dalhousie Medical School and dedicated the next 40 years to running a successful medical practice with Dr. Ed Skinner. He was also the industrial physician for Scott Paper (Neenah Paper) since its inception; founded Double Check - a complete health, fitness and lifestyle assessment service which he ran with his wife Phyllis; and had an allergy testing practice for many years. Johnny also founded Pictou County Heart Pacers, a cardiac rehabilitation program. For his medical expertise and contributions, Johnny was awarded a Fellowship in Family Medicine, Life Membership in the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and Honor of Senior Membership in the Medical Society of Nova Scotia. Johnny also got great enjoyment from giving to the community. One of his proudest accomplishments was founder of the Johnny Miles Marathon in 1975. For the past 30 years, Johnny stayed actively involved in organizing this annual event which has grown to include a series of running and walking events for all ages. He was the cofounder of the Johnny Miles Foundation which provides scholarships for student runners; was medical director of the 1997 Air Canada Cup Hockey Tournament; and a member of the selection committee for the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. As a member of the Advisory Council of the Nova Scotia Department of Fitness, he was selected to speak to all Canadians on encouraging health and fitness. Johnny organized the first workshop in fitness for the Nova Scotia Medical Society. He was recognized by the Nova Scotia Tennis Association as the "individual contributing the most to the development of Junior Tennis in Nova Scotia" for developing facilities and training programs, and received a Community Health Merit Award. Johnny and Phyllis particularly enjoyed their cottage at Black Point where the motto "The More the Merrier" made everyone feel more than welcome to share and enjoy their piece of paradise. Johnny, along with his good pal Inky, spent many hours in Johnny's workshop lovingly handcrafting furniture for many family members and friends. Johnny is survived by his wife of 49 years, Phyllis (Skinner); son, Royce (Lynn), Black Point; daughters, Lorraine, Halifax, and Beth, New Glasgow. Johnny (very fondly known as Boo) is also survived by his much-loved grandchildren, Margo and Scott Williston, Black Point. He will also be missed by his beloved cat, Minnie. Also left to mourn are brother, Floyd (Elsie), Winnipeg, Man., and sister, Mary, Sydney. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Catherine (MacLeod); brothers, Malcolm, Albert, David, Royce, Art and Harry, and sister, Isabel. What a run you had! You brought great joy and love to all. MacNEIL, Lawrence Clinton MacNEIL, Lawrence Clinton - 75, formerly of 127 Lorne St., Sydney, died on November 8, 2005, in a local Halifax hospital surrounded by family members. Mr. MacNeil was a son of the late Michael Joseph MacNeil and the late Sadie MacNeil of Intercolonial Street in Sydney. He attended Sydney Academy and St. Francis Xavier University. He married Mildred Barbara Mackley, a teacher, and they had 14 children including nine sons and five daughters. Mr. MacNeil spent most of his career working in various municipal government positions for Sydney, Antigonish, North Sydney, Frobisher Bay and Arichat. He also had previously worked for Sydney Steel. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in both Sydney and Halifax. He is survived by his wife, Mildred B. MacNeil, and their children and respective spouses, Clinton (Diane), Ottawa, Ont.; Barbara Alexander (Rick), Orrington, Me.; Marian Drillon (Emile), Thomaston, Conn.; Kenneth (Bernadette), Lower Sackville; Roderick (Mary Jane), Halifax; Conrad (Maria), Halifax; Paul (Mary Jane), Halifax; Normand (Mary Irene), Ottawa; Robert (Tammy), Ottawa; Rayelene Spear (Mark), Port Hawkesbury; Mary Donalda Mollons (Dennis), Brampton, Ont.; Elizabeth Hartigan (Robert), Port Hawkesbury; Walter MacNeil, Sydney; and Lloyd (Debra), Milton, Mass. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren of whom 20 are in Canada and six are in the United States. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Hector and Donald; infant brother, Joseph; and infant sister, Annie. BOYCE, Kenneth Munro BOYCE, Kenneth Munro - Passed away in his 80th year, on Wednesday, February 8, 2006, in Kelowna General Hospital, Kelowna, B.C. Born in North Sydney, Ken was the son of William and Hilda (Moffatt) Boyce. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Blanche (Burchell); daughter, Judith, Vancouver, B.C.; sons, David (Cathy Ann Jameson), Kelowna, and Peter (Brenda Hazelwood), Dartmouth. He will be lovingly remembered by three grandchildren, Andrew, Emma and Laura Boyce, also of Kelowna. Ken enjoyed a long and successful business career that began with security sales and insurance claims investigations. In 1962 he joined Cape Breton Broadcasters and became National Sales Manager for CJCB-TV in Sydney. At the time of his retirement in 1991, he was Vice President/Sales for the Atlantic Television System and Atlantic Satellite Network, and General Manager of ATV Cape Breton. In 2002, Ken and Blanche relocated to Kelowna, B.C. for health reasons. Patrick Luke 'Paddy' Gallivan 82, SYDNEY On their wedding anniversary, Nov. 7, 2005, Patrick 'Paddy' Gallivan rejoined his wife of 60 years, Pearl (MacKinnon) who predeceased him on Aug. 25, 2005. Born in Whitney Pier, he was the youngest son of the late Luke and Elizabeth (Kehoe) Gallivan. Mourning his loss are his sons, Brian (Jeri), Halifax, Paul (Barb), Cole Harbour; daughters, Joanne and Janet, both of Sydney; and his sister, Evelyn 'Luddy' (Mac Holt). Paddy was a loving 'Gramper' to Craig (Lisa), Maureen (Darren) and Christopher. Besides his wife, Paddy was predeceased by brothers, Monsignor William Gallivan, Gregory, Ignatius 'Nat', Danny, Wilfred, James 'Bud' and three in infancy, sister, Mary and Sr. Elizabeth 'Hilda' Gallivan. Also holding a special place in his heart were his granddaughter-in-law of two weeks, Lisa, his caregiving 'Angel', Faith Currie; and his special friend, Jocelyn Lewis. He worked with the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission for 42 years, 34 as manager all at Store 22, Whitney Pier, retiring in 1985. Paddy was an avid baseball and hockey fan. His beloved Boston Red Sox gave him a wonderful 60th anniversary gift when they won the 2004 World Series. He was a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens and enjoyed the games announced by his brother Danny. Paddy was a member of the executive of the Sydney Steel Kings of the 1950s and was the public address announcer at their games at the old Whitney Pier Stadium. This and his interest in sports at a local level made him a source of information and statistics for many. Brian Reginald Hill Brian Reginald Hill, born Dec. 5, 1940, in Sydney, to parents Gwendolyn and Mauverley Hill, now deceased, passed away May 9, 2006. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Eleanor; sons, Brian Michael (Diane) and Shaun Gregory (Jenny); grandson, Douglas Jordan; brother, Greg (Betty), Sydney; sister, Marilyn (Robin) Harrison, Margaree Forks. He was predeceased by his brother, Bill. An avid sportsman, Brian was active in all activities related to nature. As a young man he enjoyed square dancing and graduated from Sydney Academy. He was a member and president of the Young Peoples Association of the United Church. Brian was self-employed for most of his life. Owner of a store in Bayer's Road Shopping Centre, 'The Tie Baron', he also became president of the Merchants Association of Bayer's Road and a member of the Halifax Board of Trade. For a short time, he was also a member of the Rotary Club of Canada. More recently, Brian was retiring from his company, Baxter Taxi, to live his dream of buying a motorhome and travelling. Those fortunate to know him well remember a kind and loving husband, father and proud grandfather, who touched the hearts of many. He will be sadly missed by all. Love survives from here to eternity. TOPSHEE, Leslie Joseph TOPSHEE, Leslie Joseph - Truro, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2006, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, surrounded by his loving family. Born July 30, 1915, in Sydney, Les was the son of the late George Topshee and Elizabeth MacIsaac. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Ann Livingstone, and his children, Ann Elizabeth (Nancy) and Kirk Pond, Maine; Colin (Patricia Mason), Wentworth; Joseph, Truro; Mary (John Johnston), Halifax; Ron (Lisa Sholes), Virginia; Patricia (Scott McVittie), Lunenburg; Stephen (Sarah Thomas), Truro; Michael (Margo Latimer), Truro; 27 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by daughter, Teresa (Jeff Goodspeed); son, John (Candace Myers), and infant daughter, Jean. Les had an indomitable spirit and deep sense of commitment to his family, church and community. He attended St. Francis Xavier University and Marquette University, Wisconsin, where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering (1941). He was employed by the Pictou Shipyard before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant. He was employed by Domtar Chemicals in 1946 and retired in 1980 as Atlantic Regional Manager. Les had a brilliant athletic career in football, hockey, track, baseball and boxing. He finished his active playing career on a winning note as a member of the Ontario Softball Championship Team. Les was also an avid golfer. Les' athletic achievements have been recognized in many ways. He was elected to the St. F.X. Hall of Fame in 1975, Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 1985, Truro Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and Cape Breton Heritage Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also known as a sports builder, serving as president of the Truro Football Association and coaching other local teams. Les employed his interest in sports in his service in Rotary by his involvement in the Rotary Club's Little League baseball team. Les served on the Truro Town Council for six years, during which time he was on committees responsible for the building of the Cobequid Education Centre, the Truro Library, the Vocational School and the Legion Stadium. Les was one of the founding fathers of the original Truro Community Workshop. He actively participated in the planning of the new Immaculate Conception Church, of which he was an active member. He worked with the Millbrook Building Committee and Father O'Neill on the planning and construction of the Sacred Heart Church, Millbrook. In 1967, Les was voted "Citizen of the Year". He was president of the Truro Golf Club, he was on the Board of Governors of St. Francis Xavier University for six years. Les was a Paul Harris Fellow and was District Governor of Rotary, 1986-87. Les and his wife Margaret are the parents of 10 children. Les will be truly missed by family and friends. Visitation will be held today from 7-9 p.m. with the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, both in Immaculate Conception Church, Prince Street, Truro. By request, family flowers only. Leslie Topshee was an outstanding and dedicated athlete and has been involved in sport for over 60 years. He began at Sydney Academy in the twenties and thirties where he excelled in basketball, rugby and track & field. He played hockey for the Sydney Junior Millionaires and later on a farm team for the Chicago Black Hawks of the NHL. He was the MVP as a member of Chicago's Tri-State Hockey Champs. In 1934, Topshee represented the Atlantic Provinces in high jumping at the British Empire Trials in Hamilton. He missed winning by about one inch and missed a trip to the 1934 Games. At St. F. X. he won four letters in a single year in football, track, hockey and boxing. He was inducted into the St. F.X. Sport Hall of Fame in 1977. He was involved in organizing Little League football in Truro and served as president from 1964 to 1967. Les Topshee was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in1985.

John 'Jack' Williams 82, SYDNEY It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Norman 'Jack'Williams. Jack passed away peacefully Thursday, July 6, 2006, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his family. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Sidney and Hattie (MacLean) Williams. Jack was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a veteran of the Second World War. He retired from Sydney Steel where he was employed in the lab and heavy mills departments for over 40 years. Jack was an elder of St. Andrew's United Church and a former member of the Y's Men's Club of Sydney. Upon retirement, he took on the role of full-time Grampy to Christy, Mark and Kyle and enjoyed to the fullest, the quality time he spent with each. As a father and grandfather, he was a true friend, mentor and supporter and as a husband, he was the best friend and true admirer of the love of his life, Eunice. Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, Eunice (D'Aubin); daughter, Lynn Richardson, Sydney; son, John (Terry), Sydney; brothers, Donnie (Marie) and Jimmy (Phyllis), Sydney River; three grandchildren, Christy and Mark Richardson (Jennifer) and Kyle Williams; several nieces and nephews. Dr. John F. Burke, D.D.S. 83, SYDNEY It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Dr. John F. Burke of Xavier Drive fomerly of Lorway Avenue, Sydney which occurred Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, after a lengthy illness at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Dr. John Anthony and Teresa (Cozzolino) Burke. John was an active member of St. Joseph parish, Sydney and was a former president of the St. Joseph Church men's club. He was also president of the St. Joseph Home and School Association. John was instrumental in the building of St. Joseph school, the 'new' St. Joseph Church and was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. John attended Sydney Academy, St. FX in Antigonish and graduated from Dalhousie Dental School in 1947. After his schooling, he practised with his father, Dr. J. A. Burke. He continued to practise dentistry until his retirement in 1997. John was president of the Nova Scotia Dental Society and in 1985, he was elected a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. John played a major role in the construction of the MacGillivray Guest Home, formerly served as chair of the board of directors and remained a board member until 1998. He served as president of the Cape Breton South Progressive Conservative Association and was a vice-president of the provincial PC Association. He was an elected member of the House of Assembly (MLA). He was a former director of the Cape Breton Development Corporation and a member of the board of directors for the Diocese Health Care Council. John was a former member of the board of directors of Family Services of Eastern Nova Scotia. His great love was spending time with his family at the cottage in Ben Eoin. John is survived by his daughter Judy (Gordon) Paulsen, Port Hope, Ont. and two sons, David (Diane), Halifax and Paul (Barbie), Sydney; three sisters, Sister Amelia Burke CND, Montreal, Sister Regina Burke RGS, Toronto, Dottie Brennan, Halifax. John is also survived by his six loving grandchildren, Tim, Ted and Matt Paulsen, Saralyn Burke, Patrick and Katie Burke. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Carmie in 2003 and sisters, Mrs. Gertrude McNamee, Sister Patricia Burke CND, Dorothy Burke and two sisters in infancy. Carman Crawford 90, TRURO Carman Burgess Crawford, 90, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, was born in Sydney, N.S., Nov. 11, 1915, and died Aug. 2, 2006. Carman is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Ruth (MacLeod) Crawford; his daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Bob Washburn, Carman and Ian Anderson, Ina and Keith Beaver and Janice (Dede) Crawford and Bruce Hickey; 15 grandchildren, Crawford (Heily), Andrew and Jason Teasdale, Geoffrey (Lucie), Ruth Anne, Heather (Steve) and David (Emily) Washburn, Michael, Mark, Heath (Alison) and Jamie (Jill) Anderson, Janice, Alison and Gregor Beaver and Clare Hickey; five great-grandchildren, Erica and Ella Teasdale, Calvin Washburn, Meagan and Hannah Washburn-Cohen. He was predeceased by his parents, Burgess and Blanche Crawford, his daughter, Linda Crawford Teasdale, brother, Merrit and sister, Vivian Rosedale. Carman began his career in sales at Eatons in Sydney, N.S., and for many years travelled the Atlantic provinces for Savage and Florsheim Shoe companies before owning stores in Saint John, Moncton and Amherst. During the war, he servedas 'Milk for Britain' chairman. He was active in the Sydney Kinsman Club, Masons and Philae Temple Shriners, past president of the Truro Travelers Club and Canadian Shoe Travelers and in later years served as a member of the Residential Tenancy Board. Carman was a member of the First Baptist Church in Truro.A service will be held in his honour Aug. 4, 2006, at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Truro, with Rev. Douglas Haig Scott 87, AMHERST Douglas Haig Scott, 87 years of age, of Amherst, formerly of Sydney, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2006, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Lillian (MacGregor) Scott of St.Peters Rd., Sydney. He was the last member of his immediate family. Douglas was educated in Sydney schools at Ashby, Central and Sydney Academy. He was employed by Dominion Steel and Coal Corp. after graduation, in the traffic and transportationdepartment and laterin the purchasing department. The Second World Warstarted and he took army training with the North Nova Scotia Highlands regiment, however, he preferred the RCAF and enlisted with them, becoming a flying instructor obtaining the rank of flight lieutenant.Music andsinging was part of the Scott tradition and at the early age of 16, Doug became a soloist inthe First United Church and also won tenor solo awards at Halifax Music Festival (Kiwanis)and also in Sydney. Mr. Scott, while in the RCAF, sang all across Canadaat various churches and concerts. After the Second WorldWar, he studied voice, under Ernesto Vinci at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. While in Toronto, hewas tenor soloist in several United churches and also sang in many operas with the Canadian Opera Co. for several years. He was soloist in several United churches in Stellarton and Springhill and an elder as well. Later in life, Doug worked as a commercial sales representative at Enamel Heating and was well known in the Maritimes during his almost 20 years with the company. Doug was secretary of the Springhill Kidney Foundation Chapter for 20 years and was also involved with the Lung Association of Canada, the Arthritis Society and the Canadian Diabetes Society. He is survived by a son, Ronald, Toronto, Ont.; nephews, Lloyd Scott (Elenor), Orleans, Ont., and Robert Scott(Shirley), Sydney. Doug will begreatly missed by his many friends throughout the Maritimesand across the country; and has stated on occasion that he would prefer that familyand friends celebrate his good life, rather than sorrow at his passing.Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Fred, sister, Helen MacGregor Scott in 2001, his first wife, Jean Forbes, formally of New Glasgow with whom he was married for 23 years, and his second wife, the former Jean Dryden of Springhill, who passed away Sept. 29, 2001. Coincidentally, July 31 would have marked their 30th anniversary. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by request. A memorial service was held at St. Andrew's Wesley United Church in Springhill, Thursday, Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Steve Longmoore officiating. Born April 19, 1927, in Sydney, he was a son of the late Murdock and Amelia "Millie" (Caswell) Macdonald. Bob worked for Coca Cola for many years and owned the Coca Cola plant in New Glasgow. He also worked in sales in different areas of the province and with different companies. Bob owned Alex Taxi and, most recently, had worked for Bob's Taxi, car No. 418. He absolutely loved driving taxi and acting as a "chauffeur"; he enjoyed interacting with his many clients. George McKenzie George Bernard McKenzie, 74, formerly of 21 Harrington St.,died Feb. 28, 2006, in Lake Placid, Fla. He attended Sacred Heart School and Sydney Academy, leaving at an early age for Gary, Ind. He retired to Albuquerque, N.M. and Lake Placid, Fla. He served several years in the U.S. army. He was also a member of Moose Lodge and the American Legion (VFW). He was predeceased by his parents, Guy and Matilda (Chiasson) McKenzie, brother, Gordon and sister, Eleanor. MacDONALD, Rohan Gordon "Sonny" MacDONALD, Rohan Gordon "Sonny" - 75, Coxheath. It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Rohan G. MacDonald on December 6, 2006, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Ronald and Anne (MacLean) MacDonald. After graduating from Sydney Academy, he attended King's University in Halifax. He retired from Bristol Myers Squibb in 1993 after 31 years of service. Prior to these years, he was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. In his younger years, Sonny excelled in sports. He played hockey for Ashby School, Sydney Academy and the Sydney Junior Millionaires. He also played baseball and football. In his later years, he enjoyed the game of golf and was an avid Cape Breton Screaming Eagles hockey fan. He and Sheila enjoyed travel and trailering. He loved animals and his little pal, Angie, was always close by his side. Sonny had an outgoing and friendly personality, and would always enjoy meeting and chatting with people. He was a long-time member of the United Protestant Church, Sydney River, a former church elder, a Senior Choir member, and a member of the Men's Brotherhood and the Brotherhood Choir. Sonny was actively involved in the community. He was a member and a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Cape Breton Golden K and the Golden Khords chorus, a life member of the Kinsmen Club of Sydney, and a past National Officer of the Association of Kinsmen Clubs. He was a founding member and a past president of the Cape Breton branch of the S.P.C.A. and he was a former member of the Cape Breton Chordsmen barbershop chorus. A devout family man and a loving husband, father, and grandfather, Sonny is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sheila (MacQueen) MacDonald; daughter, Patricia (Stan) Brown, Coxheath; granddaughter, Jennifer Brown (Kirk MacDougall), Shenacadie, Cape Breton; grandson, Andrew Brown, Coxheath; great-grandson, Alex MacDougall; sisters-in-law, Louise (Robert) MacGregor and Betty (Bob) Cossitt. Besides his parents, his son, Bruce, predeceased him in August of 2004. Cremation has taken place.
