Dumped, betrayed or abused
by virtually every man she's been involved with over the years, Libby Kennedy
has an appalling track record when it comes to relationships. Then along comes
the delicious Drew Kirk, a handsome mechanic with enough charisma to launch his
own cologne. While everybody could tell that they were perfect for each other,
Libby's fear prevented her from responding to his advances.
However, as Kym Valentine
reveals, all this will change this fortnight. "Libby is carrying a lot of
emotional baggage and has been afraid to get involved with Drew," explains
the actress, who has played Libby for five years. "When she sees him with
somebody else, she is jealous. She realizes she wants to be with Drew, and
worries that it's too late."
Libby's fears are unfounded.
Although Drew, played by Dan Paris, has embarked on a relationship with
man-eating Geri, his heart still belongs to Libby. "Drew is only seeing
Geri because Libby rejected him," Dan says. "He throws himself into
this relationship with Geri, hoping that she will help him get over Libby. But
pretty soon they realize things are not right and go their separate ways."
At the same time as Drew and
Geri are deciding to split up, Libby comes to a realization. "She talks to
her mum Susan, who tells her that she's never going to know unless she gives
Drew a go," Kym says. "Libby is frightened, but she knows that she has
to act quickly or the chance will pass." Once her mind is made up, Libby's
a woman on a mission. "She bits the bullet and goes down to the garage when
Drew's working," Kym reveals. "She tells him she loves him and kisses
him. From that point, it's all on!"
Drew is surprised and elated
when Libby makes her move. "It's a huge weight off his shoulders," Dan
explains. "Drew has been having a tough time ever since he first told Libby
how he felt and she rejected him. It hasn't been easy being just friends."
Neighbours fans will be delighted that the romance is finally taking off. Over
the last few months, Dan and Kym have been inundated with letters urging them to
get together. "I guess it has been a little frustrating for me and the
audience," Dan says. "Whenever Kym and I did personal appearances,
people always asks us when we were getting together. I was worried that the
writers had strung it out too long."
Kym reckons her character
received most of the negative feedback. "I've been concerned that Libby's
coming across as unreasonable," she confesses. "I thought people
wouldn't like her, because Drew is so perfect and people would be angry with her
for not realizing it. I was very pleased when it finally happened."
Now they're together, the
big question is will it last? Dan says yes, and Kym isn't so sure. "I'd
like to see Libby happy and enjoying life, but I don't want to see her barefoot
and pregnant," she admits. "A lot of characters become boring once
they're in a relationship and I don't want that to happen to Libby." While
the future is up in the air for the couple, one thing is certain- Kym and Dan
won't be leaving Erinsborough for a while yet. "I'm very happy where I
am," Dan says. "I'm looking forward to next year and all the good
things ahead." "It's a new chapter for Libby," Kym adds.
"I'm keen to see where it will take her."
