When it comes to
stubbornness, there can't be many soap characters who would beat Ramsay Street's
Libby Kennedy. For months, the pretty brunette has tried to deny her love for
ex-fiancé Drew Kirk, fearing her inability to have children will ultimately
make him unhappy. Libby has even tried encouraging her best friend (and former
bridesmaid-to-be) Steph Scully to ask out Drew, in a bid to get him to move on.
But when Drew learns of his neighbour Steph's intentions, it's clear that the
handsome mechanic still only has eyes for Libby.
"Ever since the
engagement broke up, Drew's focus has been on Libby entirely," explains Dan
Paris, who plays him. "He has been completely oblivious to the fact Steph
has developed these strong feelings for him. When she tells him, it comes as a
big shock. Part of Drew is flattered, the other part is a bit embarrassed that
he didn't realize it beforehand. Of course he can't reciprocate those feelings,
and he has to let Steph down by explaining he's still in love with Libby. That
is the bottom line for him."
Rather than lick her wounds
and crawl under a rock though, Steph decides to put her own heartbreak aside and
try to reunite Drew and Libby. And the matter becomes more urgent when Drew
announces he plans to leave Erinsborough and return to his home town of Oakey,
situated in Northern Australia. "Unbeknown to Drew, Steph tells Libby that
she should stop burying her head in the sand and denying her feelings, otherwise
she will lose Drew for good," Dan continues. "Libby knows her mate is
right because every time she sees Drew she has this great feeling of love for
him."
When Libby's folks, Karl and
Susan, offer to mind a couple of young children for a week, this point is driven
home. Every time Libby and Drew see the kids, their parental instincts come to
the fore. "The children- Leo and Emily- are a delight," Dan explains.
"It's obvious that Drew and Libby are meant to be parents, even though
doctors have told Libby that it would be unsafe for her to conceive. As far as
Drew is concerned though, there are other ways to have a family and he says his
to Libby. But she still won't admit the real reason why she ended their
engagement, so Drew just continues with his plan to leave."
A buyer is found for Drew's
share in Lou's garage and, as the reality sinks in, Libby finally realizes that
she does indeed love Drew- but has she left it too late? "Libby realizes
she wants to get back together at the very same moment Drew is about to sign
over the garage ownership papers," Dan reveals. "It becomes a question
of whether or not Libby will reach him in time." Dan is not revealing the
outcome. "Fans have waited this long, they can wait a little longer!"
he laughs. Though he does hint that it won't take much for Drew to be persuaded
to stay. "Despite all that has happened, Drew loves Libby as much as
he ever has," Dan says. "If Libby gave him an inch, he would take a
mile." Dan also has another reason for crossing his fingers for a happy
ending. "If Libby doesn't reach him, I'll be out of a job. Drew will move
to Oakey and we will never see him- or me- again!"
