It's
been a traumatic time for Ramsay Street's Libby Kennedy lately. Still in
hospital recovering from the horrific motorcycle accident- which occurred only
weeks before she was set to marry Drew Kirk- it was touch and go whether she
would pull through it all. And it's not long before life deals her another
devastating blow. This fortnight, Libby discovers that, due to her injuries, she
may never be able to have children. "Libby thinks she is going to be
OK," explains Kym Valentine, who plays her. "But then she notices her
parents, Karl and Susan, acting strangely, like they’re hiding something from
her."
"Finally, Karl and Susan
reveal that she had suffered internal damage and that consequently, she might be
infertile." Libby is understandably shocked by this bombshell. But rather
than expressing her true feelings, she puts on a show of bravado. "Libby
doesn't allow herself to feel upset," Kym reveals. "At first, she
doesn’t even tell Drew, but her parents push her and eventually she breaks the
news. Drew is devastated- totally shattered. But rather than talk to him about
it, Libby makes light of the situation and pretends that everything is OK."
Of course, everything is far
from all right, and the more Libby puts on a brave face, the more her friends
and family worry about her, as Kym explains: "Karl and Susan are out of
their minds with concern. They encourage Libby to express her feelings, but she
insists she's fine. Finally, Susan manages to get under her skin and Libby cries
for the first time." But one person Libby won't turn to is Drew and, as she
shuts him out, the crisis threatens to tear them apart. "Libby puts up a
wall as far as Drew is concerned," Kym says. "He's doing everything he
can to support her, but every time she looks at him, she's reminded of the
future they both wanted to share- one which involved children- and she can't
handle it. Drew is saying all the right things- that he still loves Libby, and
that it doesn’t matter that she can’t have kids- but deep down, she
doesn’t believe him."
With the wedding postponed and
the future of Ramsay Street's golden couple up in the air, Kym is feeling the
strain of playing the arduous storyline. "It's been one thing after another
for Drew and Libby," she reflects. "I really enjoyed filming the
accident, but I wasn't so sure about all the stuff that followed. I can cope
with the fact that Libby can't have children, because that’s quite an
interesting storyline, but I'm not sure about Libby and Drew ending up in more
conflict. If it was me, I wouldn't be pushing Drew away, because I’d really
need his support," she adds. "I'm sure I'd rely on my family and
friends, and not be as stubborn and independent as Libby. However, you don’t
know how you’d react until you're put in that position."
What disappoints Kym the most is
that it doesn't looks as if she'll be wearing Libby's wedding dress in the near
future. "I kept waiting for the wardrobe department to take me shopping for
a dress. When it didn't happen, I realized the wedding must be off for some
reason!"
