With
their wedding day looming on the horizon, Neighbours' Drew Kirk and Libby
Kennedy ought to be one of the happiest couples in Soap land. But guest lists
and flower arrangements have to be put on hold when the bride-to-be is involved
in a motorbike accident. "The crash happens when Libby is riding home from
a weekend in the mountains with Steph," reveals Dan Paris, who plays Drew.
"It's late at night, it's raining and, out of the blue, a four wheel drive
comes toward them. They smash right onto it."
Although Stephanie soon regains
consciousness, Libby is rushed to hospital with life- threatening injuries.
"It's touch and go for quite a while," says Dan. "And it looks as
though Libby won't make it. She has all kinds of injuries." But that is
only half the story. While Libby is fighting for her life, clues are slowly
emerging as to the identity of the other vehicle. And all fingers point to
Brendan Bell- the estranged husband of school teacher, Tess.
"Viewers will actually see
that Brendan is responsible, as he came back to Erinsborough the day of the
accident looking for Tess," says Krista Vendy, who plays her. "When
she wasn't at home, Brendan assumed Tess was somewhere with Daniel and he left
in a jealous rage. Straight after the accident, Brendan also arrives at the
hospital with a ruptured spleen. But he makes up a story about what has
happened, and pretends to not know anything about Libby and Steph."
However, Brendan does not escape
blame for long, when Stephanie identifies his four wheel drive as the vehicle
that hit them, Brendan is charged with dangerous driving- but Tess won’t
accept that he is guilty. "Brendan still has this hold over Tess,"
says Krista, "and seeing him in hospital makes her realize how much she
loves him. So, despite what everyone else thinks about Brendan, she decides to
go back to him."
Sadly, Tess's decision is short
lived. Not only is she devastated when she overhears Brendan telling Drew that
he was responsible for the crash, Tess then suffers another blow- Brendan
suddenly dies! "He has a massive stroke," explains Krista. "and
Tess is left in total shock. She’s dealing with all these different emotions.
Above all, she loves Brendan, but she is still trying to cope with the fact that
he almost killed her friends. Tess has no one to turn to either.
Everyone warned her against Brendan and she refused to listen. So now
that he' dead, it’s hard for anyone to feel sympathetic."
While Tess if left to deal with
her feelings of grief, more heartache awaits Drew and Libby. Just when it looks
as if Libby is on the mend, she is faced with another crisis… "The
storyline is fantastic," says Dan, convinced that fans of the show will be
intrigued with the twists and turns that are in store. "It's probably the
best on I've ever had on Neighbours. We had brilliant direction and some great
acting coaching. I think the performances are excellent. It really felt like it
was a film environment, Shooting was very stressful and very draining as well.
We're just getting over it now, even though we finished filming three months
ago. It's a very long storyline and will run for six months, if not longer. So
keep watching!" Don't worry, Dan. We will!
