Neighbours Golden Couple: Libby Kennedy and Drew Kirk |
Married at Last
After a wild hen night, a bridesmaid crisis and a near-death experience, Drew and Libby finally make it to the altar!
Neighbours' Libby and Drew finally make it down the aisle
It's a good job Ramsay Street's Drew Kirk is a patient man, otherwise fans of Neighbours would not be witnessing his marriage to Libby Kennedy this month. But proving that good things always come to those who wait, Drew finds himself at the altar saying "I do" to the woman he loves.
However while their friendship remains solid in the days leading up to the wedding, unfortunately not everything runs smoothly. "It's all very manic," says Kym Valentine, who plays Libby. "For starters, Libby still doesn't have a bridesmaid after Stephanie dropped out way back when it emerged that she had feelings for Drew. But, at the last minute she agrees to be in the bridal party again, so luckily that all turns out for the best. Libby is less enthusiastic though when pal Dione Bliss insists on throwing her a wild hen night. "Libby just wants to take it easy," Kym explains. "I think there's been enough drama in her life, without her wanting a big evening out. But Dione and Tess insist, and they all dress up and take Libby out on the town, on it turns out to be a really fun night."
Fun, however, could not describe the events of the following morning. As Libby is catching up with Drew, Paul McClain nearly runs them over while learning to drive in Harold's car. "Libby and Drew manage to jump clear of the car and escape without a scratch, but Drew has a go at Paul," says Kym. "It's just another thing they didn't need in the week of their wedding!" Barely do they have time to catch their breath when Drew's noisy family- his parents, sister, brother and Scottish uncle- descend on Ramsay Street with hurricane force. "It gets pretty hectic," explains Kym. "But all Libby really cares about is the day itself. She has the usual jitters, but it all turns out perfectly."
So with Libby look radiant in a classic white dress and Drew kitted out in traditional Scottish attire, the pair finally exchange vows. And according to Kym, this is when the line between reality and fiction blurred. "I felt like a real bride, and the day felt like a real wedding," says Kym, though adds she has no intention of marrying Dan Paris, who plays Drew. "It was amazing once I put on the dress. It felt as if it was happening for real! Before I went in the church, Alan said the nicest thing to me- he said 'I'm proud of you baby girl', which is what he has always called me. Then in the church, I looked at Jackie and got all teary. So did she, but Jackie's such a good actor that I don't know if she was pretending!" However, there was no acting for Dan when it came to the highlight of the reception- he had to sing a traditional Scottish folk song! "Dan was so nervous," Kym says, "but he did a great job."
With few shocks at the wedding and reception, fans will have to wait for the honeymoon in sun-drenched northern Australia for the real excitement. "Geri Hallett, Libby's old nemesis from Erinsborough News, turns up," reveals Kym. "She's been sent to do a story on the honeymoon and Libby is livid!" It looks like things will be ruined, but Drew, ever the pacifist, suggests doing a deal so they can be left in peace. "While Libby hates co-operating with Geri, she has no choice," says Kym. But the honeymoon is soon over when Drew and Libby return home and argue where to live. Married life certainly won't be dull for this pair! "Drew is the realist, Libby is the dreamer, so it can only lead to more trouble!"
