Fil-Am
writer Skinner participates in "Kuwentuhan" series
QUEZON CITY - Michelle Maria Cruz Skinner, a noted Filipino-American
writer and author of "Balikbayan" and "Mango Seasons," participated
in the Likhaan Writers Kuwentuhan Series last July 30 at the
Faculty Lounge at the Bulwagang Rizal in the University of
the Philippines Diliman campus here.
Born in 1965 and raised in the Philippines
for eighteen years, Skinner graduated from the University
of Hawaii in 1987. A dancer and a photographer as well as
a writer, she presents a fresh image and a new voice for Filipino
American literature.
"Faith Healer," the opening story in her
short story collection Balikbayan, was one of 54 stories selected
for nationwide syndication in the 7th Annual PEN Syndicated
Fiction Project in 1988.
"Michelle Maria Cruz Skinner understands
the way of humankind," the late great Bienvenido Santos once
said. "Her stories are written with such simplicity that the
truth they convey shines with urgency the proper reader cannot
miss."
