ALTERNATE INCARNATIONS: Other Versions of Supergirl
The recently concluded Superman Adventures animated TV show introduced a new Kara who will be very familiar to fans of the original Kara Zor-El - with a slight twist. Kara In-Ze is the last survivor of the planet Argo (the original Supergirl came from Argo City, a fragment of Krypton which had survived in space), which was throw out of its orbit by the explosion of its sister planet Krypton. Kara is the last survivor of her planet, and upon her arrival on Earth after many years spent in cryogenic sleep, she fashioned a Supergirl outfit for herself and set upon helping Superman as the most powerful girl on Earth. Kara only appeared in a few episodes before the Superman TV series ended, but it's nice to have a Supergirl on TV again. Her costume is quite a bit different from her comic version (and Supergirl has had many costume changes over the years!), and in an interesting twist, she wears glasses in her civilian identity like her "cousin". The animated Kara has guest-starred in the SUPERMAN ADVENTURES comicbook, issues #21 ("Supergirl Adventures") and #39. |
A special Elseworld comic called Elseworld's Finest: Supergirl & Batgirl was released September/98, featuring an alternate universe in which Superman and Batman never existed and the two superwomen are the most powerful heros in a darker world. Batgirl is the protector of Gotham City, and she allows very little contact with the outside world. Supergirl is the protector of Lex Luthor, benefactor of the altered Justice League. Batgirl and Supergirl must reconcile their differences for the good of all. This one-shot was so popular that it quickly sold out and has yet to see reprint. About the only place to find it these days is on Ebay. View cover. { Home } |
