The Family Garden

Notes

Harry J. BATTISTONI

He was quite sucessful in his business adventures.  He sold property and built homes in the Lake Garda area of Avon of Connecticut and in Unionville & Bristol, Connecticut.  He had 2 children, a son named Alvin and a daughter (name unknown).  He bought a new thunderbird every year and drove around town with a buxom vivacious blonde secretary.  He owned the Lake Garda Country Club and rented it out to the Robinson Day Camp in summer.  Kids were bused in from East Harford.

The Lake Garda area was developed by an Italian immigrant named Harry Battistoni. He created several lakes in the area and named them for Italian lakes near his birthplace.

AVON LAND LOVERS by Ruth Maher (extracts)

Caroline B. LaMonica, Town Clerk, has long been an out-standing personality in the story of Avon.....

Caroline's father, John Battistoni, was born in the Lago del Garda area of northern Italy.  Her mother, Alice Castagna, was born in New York City and later moved to Simsbury. John's father, Vincent, was a professional architect who designed churches in Italy. John's distant cousin, HARRY BATTISTONI, developed the Lake Garda section ofUnionville/Burlington and named the lake for his birthplace.

In the 12th century Garda (whose name comes from "warda guardia", which means sentry or lookout) gave its name to the entire lake, which until that time was called Benaco. Sitting at the center of a wide gulf between the Rock and San Vigilio Point, Garda is an interesting town with lovely old houses, archways, narrow alleys and small squares. Fishing remains an important aspect of the town, and the local fishing cooperative is still active. This ancient profession is also celebrated by traditional events such as the "Sardallata al Pal del Vò'" (Sardine Festival), which is held in July on the evening of the full moon.
