The Family Garden

Notes

Celia FOSTER

Died at a young age from gravel (that's what Mom's note says!)

The genealogist who worked on the Foster Family refered to her as Mary M. C. J./Celia Foster.  I have no idea what that means.

Sebastiano MASINI

From grandson, Kevin Robinson Masini: He immigrated from Northern Italy and came through Ellis Island.  The surname was changed at Ellis Island, original family name is unknown.  He was an explosives expert.  He used explosives to clear land and build tunnels.  He grew his own grapes for wine and made his own wine.  He had three 8 foot casks he kept in his basement to ferment his wine.  The basement always smelled of wine.  He always wanted to give the kids wine when they came to visit, but Kevin's mother didn't want them to have any.  He didn't understand why because in Italy, everyone drank wine at all meals. He had a large vegetable garden and grew asparagus, corn and all kinds of other vegetables.  He kept a chicken coop for eggs and chicken and sometimes had goats.   He remembers him always having a big smile and a very happy disposition.  The minute anyone walked in his door, he was offering them food and wine.  He adored his grandchildren and never said no to them.

Three of their children lived next to them....the first house belonged to Sebastian and Eva, next door to them was their daughter Elia and her family, next door to them was their son Domenico an his family, and next door to them, was their daughter Teresa and her family.  They not only lived close together, they also shared everything in all their families together.  Kevin believes that his father, their other son, lived on the same street when he married Marion, but they later moved.  Eva thought Marion was somewhat of renagade for taking him away.  They moved about 5 miles away...

Notes from Regina Gualco, Northern Italy Genealogy Discussion List:  According to the Connecticut Death Index he was born 20 Aug 1884 and according to the SSDI, he was born August 20 1885.

Sebastain and Eva were probably married in 1912 based on Domenic's approximate date of birth and the fact that in the 1930 census, it states that Sebastian was 27 and Eva was 29 when they married.  (Although the 1930 census seems ot have lots of incorrect info for the Masini's, not the least of which their surname is given as Sebastiano rather than Masini).
Tori Del Benaco is on the banks of Lake Garda, Italy.  {Note from me - this is the same area that Eva's brother, Harry Battistoni is from, so I suspected the Masini's must have lived near the Battistoni's}.

For starters, you could write to Torri Del Benaco for a copy of the marriage record and marriage banns for Sebastian and Eva. This would give you the names of their parents.

The address to write to is:

Notes from grandson Kevin Robsinson Masini - she refused to speak English.  She used a scant few broken phrases to tell them kids something.  She expected everyone to learn Italian and wouldn't speak to her daughter-in-law until she learned Italian.

Not sure how or if this fits in with this family, so copied here for further research - This William died abt 1361 (Edward III lived from 1327-1377).  It could be the William son of John, who may have had a son Roland since both of those names are so common in this family)
1361 Inquest taken on the death of William de THORNEBERGH, in which it is shown that at some time he was seised of a moiety of a shieling in Sleddall, and some time before his death he gave it to his son Roland and Alice his wife and their issue; they held it of the king as of the fees which belonged to William de COUCY then in the king's hands by knight's service. He also held on the day he died an 8th part of the hamlet of Selette and a moiety of the hamlet of Whinfell, of Matthew de REDMAN by knight's service and for 16s. 8d. yearly; and two tenements in the hamlet of Skelmiser, of Roger de LEYBURNE, 'chivaler,' by the service of 2d. yearly, worth 100s. He died 23 Edward III. Roland de THORNBERGH, his son aged 35 years, is his next heir. MS. Rawl. B. 438, f. 46.

A. R. L. MOSELEY

1850 Greene County, Tennessee Census, Enumeration Date: 31 Aug 1850.
A. R. L. Moseley, age 49, occupation:  wagon maker, b. Virginia
Gilena A, wife, age 30, occupation:  housewife
Lavinia, daughter, age 6
Eugene S., son, age 4
Cassa E., daughter, age 3
Mary, daughter, age 2
Andrew L, son, age 1
Sylvester D., son, age 4 months

Also found in the 1850 Cocke County, 9th Div E., District, Page 302, Enumerated 31 Aug 1850, line 210.  Evidently, he moved his family from Green to Cocke County after the Green County Census and before the Cocke County Census.  Identical information is found in both locations.

1860 Census, Tennessee
Mosely, R. L., age 57
Mary, age 45
Eugene, age 18
Susannah, age 16
Hannah, age 15
Mariah, age 12
George, age 10
Luther, age 8
Sarah, age 7
William, age 6
Matilda, age 5
Matthew, age 4
Ezekiel, age 3
Moses, age 2

Speculations about the children listed in the 1850 and 1860 census.

From these 2 census records, I am guessing that A. R. L. Moseley was married twice.  In the 1850 census, he was married to Gilena (LNU).  He and Gilena had 6 children.  She must have died fairly soon after the census was taken.  It appears he married a widow named Mary (LNU) with several children.  I am taking a wild guess here as to the distribution of these children in the 1860 census:

Eugene - son of A.R. L. and Gilena
Susannah - daughter of Mary
Hannah - daughter of Mary
Mariah - daughter Mary
George - son of Mary

Andrew - in the 1850 census he is listed as Andrew L., so he could be the Luther in the 1850 census - so, I'm putting him with A. R. L. and Gilena

The remaining children, Sarah, William, Matilda, Matthew, Ezekiel and Moses could all be the children of A.R.L. and Mary, or some from only Mary.  If Gilena died circa 1850, he could easily have married Mary by 1851 and be the father of Sarah b. circa 1852 and on down.

That accounts for only 3 of the 6 children of A. R. L. and Gilena.
Missing are:
Lavinia - she would be abt 16 in 1860, so she may have already married by the time the census was taken.
Cassa A., died 1850
Mary, died 1850
Sylvester D., was 4 months old in 1850, did he die?

On my father's family group sheet, he also has a Leapa E. born 1847.  This child would have to have been a twin to Cassa, also born 1847.  Leapa is not on the 1850 census, so did this child die before then?

Notes from my father:

A. R. L. Moseley purchased land near the French Broad River in Cocke County, Tennessee on 28 Apr 1859.  Surety Oct. 11, 1859, Witness E. S. Moseley, 182 acres.  Land bordered 2145 acres purchased by George W. Susong on the French Broad River.

He was shown in deed book March 5, 1874.

Cassa A. MOSELEY

Her family is shown on the Greene County, Tennesee Census of 1850 and on the 1850 Cocke County, Tennessee Census of 1850.  It is assumed that the family lived in Greene County when that census was taken, and moved to Cocke County before the census was taken there.   Cassa is on the Greene County census, and is not on the Cocke County Census.  It is presumed that she died in that short interium.  She also does not appear on the 1860 census with her family.

Mary MOSELEY

Her family is shown on the Greene County, Tennesee Census of 1850 and on the 1850 Cocke County, Tennessee Census of 1850.  It is assumed that the family lived in Greene County when that census was taken, and moved to Cocke County before the census was taken there.   Cassa is on the Greene County census, and is not on the Cocke County Census.  It is presumed that she died in that short interium.  She also does not appear on the 1860 census with her family, however there is a Mariah, age 12 on the 1860 census.  Might be her, but could also be the daughter of A. R. L.s second wife.
