The Family Garden

Notes

Thomas STEVENS

The IGI identifies Thomas as the son of Edward Stephens, b. 1523, and Joan Fowler (97.) b. 1529.

Nicholas HATHAWAY

Nicholas Hathaway was probably the son of Thomas and Margaret Hathaway of Kingscote, Glouchester, England. He was born around 1595. Nicholas arrived in New England before February of 1638/9 and was in Braintree in 1642. It's possible he had two others sons named Jacob and Joseph.

Maps included in the Hathaway family history of Freetown, Massachusetts, show sites such as the Hathaway Library, a house built by Dr. Nicholas Hathaway in 1806, Silas Hathaway’s Creek, Hathaway Wharf, the home of the Hon. Elnathan Hathaway, and the marker at the first John Hathaway house. It notes John Jr. had the first licensed tavern and owned a share in the iron factory there as well as perhaps a shipyard. The history recommends as sources THE HISTORY OF BRAINTREE, THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST: Vol 23 and Vol 34; HISTORY OF DIGHTON and TAUNTON DEEDS.

Files in Salt Lake agree Nicholas was the son of Thomas and Margaret and add that his grandfather was also Thomas Hathaway.  According to the IGI, Thomas Hathaway was born in 1560 in London and died in 1610 while his wife Margaret was born in about 1573 and died in 1630 in Glouster.

Thomas HARVEY

THOMAS HARVEY, a great-grandson of Turner Harvey, and a younger brother of Henry the owner of Bridgwater manor, was born in Somersetshire about the year 1585-- which was not many years after the death of Turner, who had lived to a great age.

The home of Thomas was at Ashill, a small village pleasantly situated on rising ground three miles west of Ilminster and nine miles east of Taunton in Somersetshire. The village probably derived its name from the large number of ash trees that at one time grew in that locality, which constituted part of the great forest of Neroche. In Doomsday Book the name of the place is written Aiselle, and is there said to be held by Robert Earl of Morton, being one of the many manors in Somersetshire which he obtained of his brother William the Conqueror. In 1791 the parish of Ashill contained one church, 55 houses and 320 inhabitants.

When, in the eleventh century, the Normans overran England, they began to seat themselves chiefly in Surrey, Sussex and Kent, adjoining counties in the south-easternmost corner of the conquered Isle.

As noted, there were Anglo-Norman Harveys in Surrey as early as the beginning of the thirteenth century. In Kent there were Harveys settled at Eythorne early in the fifteenth century, and later at Eastry and Cowden--all sprung from the same stock; and at about the beginning of the sixteenth century, William Harvey, son of Humphrey and brother of Turner, was settled at Folkestone in Kent. It is quite probable that Humphrey Harvey was originally of Kent--but this cannot not be determined.

In the "History of Nottingham, New Hampshire," by the Rev. F. C. Cogswell (1878), it is stated on page 209: "Tradition says that all the Harveys in the United States descended from the Earl of Bristol in England, whose name was Harvey. His son came to this country, with other young noblemen, and purchased a tract of land embracing Taunton and Rehoboth, in Massachusetts. This young Harvey married an American girl, and so was disinherited by his aristocratic father in England." This statement was based by the author, without doubt, on some very airy fairy-tale which he had heard. Had he examined certain published records, well known and easily accessible, he would have learned that John Hervey, M.P., of Ickworth, co. Suffolk, was married first in 1687 (over fifty years after the advent in this country of William and Thomas Harvey of Taunton), was elevated to the peerage as Baron Hervey in 1703, and 19 Oct. 1714 was created (6rst) Earl of Bristol. It is possible, or may be true in fact, that the remote ancestors of John Hervey, the first Earl of Bristol, and Thomas Harvey of Somersetshire (the father of William and Thomas Harvey of Taunton, Mass.) were identical; but it is doubtful if there is any evidence in existence to prove the fact.

Thomas HARVEY

Thomas Harvey 1617-1651 son of Thomas of Ashill and brother of William was born in Somersetshire, England and emigrated to Dorchester Mass. with William in 1636. He settled in Taunton, two years later. Records show that he became a Proprietor of Taunton upon payment of 12 shillings, having been too young to become a proprietor at the time of the purchase. He married Elizabeth Andrews about 1642. She died in Taunton in 1717 (aged 103 years old). Issue: Thomas (born 1643); William; John

In 1636, Thomas and William Harvey, originally of Somerset, England, were recorded in the annals of Dorcester, Mass. The coat of arms granted to this branch of the Harvey Family is blazoned: "Sable, a fesse or, between three squirrels sejant argent, cracking nuts of the second."

Agnes HARVEY

This may be the unamed daughter in Oscar Jewell's book "The Harvey Family" that married Anthony Slocum and came with her husband to America about 1636 and settled at Dorchester.  anthony was one of forty-six "first and ancient purchases" in 1637 of Taunton, Massachusetts, where he resided from 1638 to 1662.

John BOATNER

The only official record of John Boatner's existence is in a census listing for John Bottaner in Sumter County in 1790.  His household in that year consisted of three males uner the age of 16, six females of unstated age and five slaves.  At least one child (Louisa) presumably arrived after that date.  Almost all ealy Sumter County records have been destroyed, so little searching is possible.  John's wife was Elizabeth Gaulden of Sumter County.  The Gauldens settled in the High Hills section of Sumter County about 1758, having moved there from Virginia.  John Boatner is said to have died in 1796.  This information was provided by his daughter-in-law, Sarah Jelks Boatner Freeman, who wrote in her old age to her grandson William Boatner Reily that her husband's father had been "a farmer mechanic and a very nice gentleman."  *Source:   Ludwig Bottner and His Sons, by Paul S. Fields, 1985

Elizabeth GAULDEN

Elizabeth is known to have owned land on Long Branch of Black River adjoining Reuben Long.  In 1803, Elizabeth purchased additional land adjoining her farm.  To the 150 acres (which may have been John Boatner's - her husband's original farm), she added another 150 acres, purchased for $500 from Reuben Long.  (SC Archives, Sumter Co Deeded Vol. B, pp. 9-11, Roll 1).  *Source:   Ludwig Bottner and His Sons, by Paul S. Robert BLAND

The origin of this branch was Orton Parish in Westmoreland and Sedbergh in York County in what is now Cumbria in England. The oldest known Bland was identified by Thoresby as Roger Bland but I believe old Thoresby misheard the name of Robert. He was born about the turn of the 16th Century and was the father of Adam Bland (C1528-1594) who about 1551 married Jane or Joan Atkyns.

NOTE:  In a message on Bland Genforum, an inventory of the estate of Robert Bland proves his name was Robert, not Roger.
