Impossible Love?
"Impossible Love…?"
PG-13 or so

Here is my second fanfiction on Jonny Quest. Well let's hope that this story is better than my last, it's a continuation from my last story ("Is This Love?) So sit back and enjoy!

Disclaimers: I don't own anything from Jonny Quest including the characters, etc. I might come up with a few characters but not many. Chow peoples.
Q
Jonny sat in his room thinking. He had just left everyone else and said that he'd go to sleep, but he wasn't really tired. Too many things had happened over the past twenty-four hours. Jessie had almost died because of him… because of a foolish mistake.
`How could I have ever been interested in Cilia?' Jonny shook his head, he had never really been interested. Perhaps he had thought that if he dated someone, he'd forget about the girl he really loved… Jessie Bannon. "Jess…" he whispered as his eyes watered slightly. But a love between them would be impossible. She seemed to have her heart elsewhere, like with Hadji.
He hit his pillow in anger, `I just wish… if only I had a chance…' he sighed. `She'd never be interested in me. Might as well get some sleep…' he sighed and lay down.
Q
Jessie's face was bandaged now and she went up to her room. As she passed Jonny's room she stopped for a moment. Something seemed to have been bothering him… maybe she should find out what. Slowly she opened the door a crack and found him sound asleep, one hand under his head and the other across his stomach.
She blushed slightly as she thought about how wonderful he looked right then. `Jeez, what am I thinking?' Jessie shook her head and continued on to the next door.
Q
Benton Quest returned to the main building around one hour later, he had been in the lighthouse and was pondering on his latest discovery- that Jonny was in love with Jessie. "Hey Benton, what were you doing?" Race asked from the kitchen.
"I was just pondering over a theory," true enough. Benton sighed and sat down on the couch in the family room. Hadji sat across from him and studied his face a moment.
"There is something that you are not telling us," Hadji announced.
Benton shrugged, "Sorry Hadji, but until proven I will not say. My lips are sealed."
Hadji laughed as Race came in the room, "What did I miss?" he asked.
"Nothing…" Benton waved a dismissing hand.
"So, doc, are we still traveling to Europe to find out what's going on around there?" Race asked as he sat down. Dr. Quest nodded,
"I guess. I do hate to leave after all that has happened, but we don't really have a choice. The government there said it was top secret and that we needed to be there A.S.A.P. and I said tomorrow. We'll leave later tonight I guess."
Hadji wondered if it was wise to leave Jonny just yet. Something was wrong with his friend, he could tell. Maybe he should talk to Jessie when she woke up.
"A penny for your thoughts," Benton directed his statement at Hadji.
"Huh?" Hadji looked up, "Oh, it's nothing… I'm not sure but something is wrong with Jonny…" Benton didn't answer, "Do you know what it is?" Hadji saw Dr. Quest avert his eyes.
"Let's just say I have an idea to still be tried…"
Race and Hadji exchanged glances before shrugging. Whatever it was, Benton didn't seem to want to say.
Q
Hadji, Jonny, and Jessie waved as Race and Dr. Quest took off in the helicopter at five o'clock. "So it's just us!" Jessie remarked, eyeing Jonny out of the corner of her eye.
"Yeah, I guess. So whatta you want to do?" Jonny asked.
Jessie smiled, "I think I could do some real `Quest world' gaming. At least it's not like Cilia's game!"
Jonny immediately sobered at the mention of the virtual game that Cilia had created. It reminded him of how he had endangered Jessie and himself.
Realizing what Jonny was upset about, Jessie quickly added, "I mean- well… I am up for a game in Quest world. Come on Jonny, please?" She begged.
Suddenly he smiled and replied, "Beat ya there!" He took off with Jessie at his heels. Hadji jogged after them as he laughed.
     "All set?" Hadji asked.
     "Yep!" Was Jonny's reply.
     "Okay here!" Jessie added.
"Accessing Quest World, subjects Jonny Quest and Jessie Bannon…"
     "Goin' hot!" Jonny finished.
Hadji watched the computer screen monitor as Jessie and Jonny went into a flight simulation game. Earlier that afternoon, Dr. Quest and Hadji had gotten all of the systems up and running again. It had been a real shock when Cilia had taken control over IRIS, but Dr. Quest had just been relived to get the system up again before he left.
"I have you in my sight, Jess!" Jonny shouted.
"Oh yeah? Well not for long!"
     "What the-?"
Hadji watched the screen as Jessie pulled up and back, then fired a shot at Jonny. "Gotcha!"
Jonny and Jessie pulled out of the game and took off the virtual reality equipment. Jessie looked at Jonny again, something just had to be wrong. She barely ever won, and definitely not so easily, "Hello, earth to Jonny! You seemed distracted, what's up?"
     He shrugged, "Nothing."
Jessie crossed her arms in front of her and tapped her foot, "That won't work this time Jonny Quest! Something's up."
"I don't want to talk about it, okay?" Jonny turned to go down the steps, "Anyone ready for dinner?"
Hadji and Jessie exchanged glances, something was very wrong here. "My friend, you should really tell us what is wrong…"
"Just…. Leave me alone, okay? I'm fine! Absolutely fine!" Jonny spun around and went down the stairs.
Jessie's face fell, "What do you think is up with him? He's just so…" she looked for the right word, "…sad… kinda."
"I don't know, but you are right he does seem sad," Hadji looked after his best friend, "Dr. Quest knows, that I'm positive of, but he won't tell."
     "This is strange," Jessie muttered.
"I'm afraid that most of life is strange," Hadji told her.
Jessie shrugged, "Well let's go find Jonny."
Q
Jonny stood looking down from the cliffs, he felt awful. There wasn't any reason for him to yell, what was he thinking? But he was just so uptight, the feelings that he had for Jessie had become stronger after Cilia kidnapped them. He remembered that before he had left the compound to find Cilia, he had kissed Jessie softly as she slept, `She has such soft skin… she's so pretty… oh quit it!' He turned away from the edge and headed towards the house.
But his mind didn't want to leave the subject alone, `Come on, maybe if I talk to her and tell her how I feel it'll be fine. No,' he argued, `don't bug her. It's not fair to mess up her life, besides… it might ruin our friendship.'
"Hey Jonny! Wait up!" He turned to find Jessie and Hadji racing towards him.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Jessie demanded, knowing that she'd get a lie for an answer.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Sorry about what I said back there… I don't know what got into me. Come on, let's eat."
Hadji and Jessie followed Jonny's lead into the house. "So what are we going to have tonight?" Hadji asked, glancing in the refrigerator. Jessie rummaged through a cupboard and found a box of spaghetti.
"Well I can make some pasta, and we have to have sauce somewhere…" she looked in another cupboard and pulled out a jar, "Yep! You two go in the other room and I'll fix dinner. Go on now!" Jessie shooed them out of the kitchen and got busy boiling the water.
`What is wrong with him?' She wondered, `Jonny never acts like this… maybe it was something Cilia did. Or was it-?' she broke off. `Don't think like that,' she scolded herself. Jessie shook her head, Jonny Quest was almost impossible to understand. Right now she wished that Jonny would act like his normal cocky self. She snorted, `Who would have thought?'
"Oops!" Jessie quickly turned down the heat on the stove and put the pasta in the pot. She shook her head and sighed, Jonny would get over it- whatever `it' was.
Q
Three days later, Benton Quest finally decided to call and talk to his son. He dialed the number quickly and waited as the phone rang. `Hurry up… pick up the phone…'

Jonny sat back in an armchair in the family room, Hadji and Jessie also sat in the room- all were just relaxing. The phone rang and Jessie picked it up, "Hello? Oh hi! Sure, here's Jonny." She handed over the phone to her friend, "It's Dr. Quest."
"Hi… Dad?" Jonny held the phone to his ear as his father replied
"Jonny, we need to talk seriously."
"About what…?" Jonny was slightly confused.
Benton sighed, "I know that something is going on back home. Hadji and Jessie have been e-mailing Race and I and each time they mention that you are not acting right."
Jonny leaned his head back, "Just a minute Dad." He stood up and waved to Hadji and Jessie as he walked up the stairs to his room. "Alright-"
     "Jonny, I think I already know what's going on…"
"And what would that be?" Jonny asked a little coolly.
"Now Jonny, don't act that way. Am I right in guessing that you have… feelings for Jessie?"
The blonde fifteen year old clenched his fist, it took him a while to reply, "I don't know what you mean."
"You shouldn't lie to yourself. Jonny if you do care for her, tell her… let her know. Or at least talk to somebody."
     "Yeah, sure Dad," Jonny muttered.
Dr. Quest sighed again, "Alright, I'll talk to you later. We'll be home in about five days, I'll call when we're leaving."
     "Bye."
"Bye Jonny, and do think about what I said."
Jonny nodded dumbly as he hung up. `Maybe I should talk to someone…' He headed back downstairs and found Jessie glancing through a news paper, "They'll be home in about five days. Whatcha doing Jess?"
"I'm looking up times that movies are showing. Thought we could use a little movie break. You wanna come?"
Jonny shrugged, "I guess. So what time?"
Q
Hadji, Jessie, and Jonny sat in the mostly vacant Movie Theater. The movie was about half way done and proved pretty good. Jonny didn't pay too much attention to the screen, it was a love/comedy and he wasn't in the mood for romance. He studied Jessie's face as she watched the story unfold.
"Anyone want popcorn or something?" Hadji whispered, "I'll go out and get some." Jonny nodded.
"Sure, popcorn sounds good." Hadji nodded in reply and crept to the aisle.
Jessie still sat intently watching the movie, she felt strange for some reason. Here she was at a movie, a romance for that matter, with her two guy friends. Most girls couldn't ask for more, but she felt different. `Those girls who would think I'm lucky obviously don't know that I'm not "involved" with either of them.' She snorted softly, `Not that I would mind if I was involved with…' her mind trailed off as her face went hot, she was thankful for the darkness at that point.
`Focus on the movie…' Jessie told herself. `Oh sure… a great close-up kissing scene. Just what I need.'
Jonny watched the screen and made a face, `This is just what I need to make my day.'
Finally Jessie felt like she needed to show some sign of life so she whispered, "How romantic."
Jonny cocked his head to the side as he looked at her, "I don't think so. They don't know what romantic is, obviously." Suddenly his face went hot and he was glad for the darkness. `Now why did I go and say that?'
Jessie studied his face in the dim light, "Oh really. And you are an expert?"
"Er… no…." Jonny turned his face away.
"Then tell me, oh wise one, what is a romantic kiss?"
Suddenly Jonny had an idea and he couldn't help himself, this was a rare opportunity… "Okay then you want to know? Well I'll give you your answer."
Jessie suddenly started to feel giddy and light-headed, just thinking about what she wanted him to do… but he wouldn't, she knew that. Or would he? `That look on his face is dangerous…' she thought.
Slowly Jonny turned Jessie sideways to face him. He hesitantly put his hand on the small of her back and stopped for a moment, he started to have second thoughts on this. His other hand was gently placed at the base of her neck. He stopped then, realizing exactly what he was doing. He was about to break away when Jessie brought her hands around him. Jonny then didn't care about anything else, he leaned down and not daring to look in her eyes he kissed her. Lightly at first, backing up only centimeters but then he returned to her lips.
Jessie closed her eyes and savored the moment as Jonny's lips met hers. As he backed away, she was disappointed but then she was surprised when he came back in full force… not that she was complaining. Suddenly Jonny pulled back fully, breathing hard. "Sorry…" he muttered.
She was about to protest when Hadji's voice came, "Here's the popcorn."
Jonny and Jessie jumped and for the second time they were thankful for the darkness, as they would have been a bright red. "Er… uh… thanks Hadj," Jonny finally managed to say.
"Sure…" Hadji tried desperately to see his friend's faces to no avail. `Confound this darkness… something happened here…'
Jessie stared at the screen, blindly, `Wow… that was some kiss!' She smiled suddenly as she remembered it, `I never knew Jonny could be like that… so romantic… it was as if suddenly I was taken to another world.'
`I can't believe I just did that,' Jonny thought, `It was a big risk… but,' he grinned, `it was well worth it!' He had only planned to kiss her for a few seconds, the long, deep kiss was not what he had intended. The thing that started his mind working was the way Jessie had acted. She had almost seemed… enthusiastic about it. `I'm imaging things… but it would be nice if it's true.' He decided to cling to that hope, that she might be interested.
Q
Rene Barrot paced angrily in front of the large picture window. "She was a fool letting him off that spell," he snarled.
"Don't be so hard on her. Yes she was a fool, but now she is gone. Cilia paid for her mistake-"
"That is no excuse!" Rene shouted, turning to the dark-haired woman behind him, "She was a part of this whole plan. If she hadn't gone and tried to kill off that Bannon kid we would have been able to hold her hostage and use her to get to the young Quest. But nooooo, she had to have her way and try to get the boy." He slammed his hand hard on the desk, "Her ways didn't work and she never would listen to me."
"Would you dare deny her?" The woman was amused, "Really, Rene, Cilia could have drained you life-force and then where would you be?"
Rene curled his hand into a fist, "Do I need to remind you, Julia, that you would not be here now if it wasn't for me?" Julia's amused expression fell, Rene smiled, "Good, you have not forgotten. Now onto business."
Julia nodded, "Yeah, let's get started."
Rene narrowed his eyes, obviously not a patient man, "We can't start without Surd. Where is he?"
"He'll be coming," Julia replied glancing out the window at the darkening sky. She smiled, Roger would have been done implanting the program into Quest World and would have fixed the ventilation. Now all they had to do was wait.
Q
It was around seven o'clock when Hadji, Jonny, and Jessie reached the Quest compound. "That was fun, huh?" Hadji asked.
"Yeah…" Jessie replied dreamily, thinking about the kiss.
     "Uh-huh," was Jonny's distracted response.
When they realized that Hadji was staring at them in curiosity, both quickly tried to rephrase their answer.
"Yeah… uh the movie was great," Jessie put on a fake smile and nodded her head vigorously.
     "I agree… er, good movie."
Hadji studied his friends a little while longer before walking into the main house. Jonny and Jessie didn't dare exchange glances as they walked in, both were quite red in the face. "I'm going to go do some stuff on my laptop. Later!" Jonny announced as he rushed up the stairs to his room. `That was close…'
Jonny sighed, he had been thinking about this all day, ever since his father had talked to him earlier that afternoon. `Don't freak out now… just get this written. You don't have to give it to anyone.' He made up his mind and sat at his desk, loading up the word processing program he leaned back and thought about what to write.
Suddenly he couldn't think straight, he didn't know why… it didn't make any sense. He hadn't been tired a few moments ago. What was going on here? Jonny stumbled out of his room and felt slightly better, "Hadj… Jess…?" He called as slowly he blacked out and tumbled down the steps.
Q
Hadji sat up suddenly from his position on the couch, "Something is wrong…"
Jessie looked at him, "What? I don't notice anything."
"It's not anything down here… I think it's something upstairs-"
"Jonny!" Jessie suddenly cried, she stood up frantically and moved towards the stairs to hear Jonny's faint cries of,
"Hadj… Jess…" it was followed by a loud crash and Jessie rushed over to find Jonny lying unconscious at the bottom of the steps.
     "What's happened to him? Hadji…?"
"Cover your nose and mouth!" Hadji told her as he covered the bottom half of his face with the top of his shirt. Jessie did the same.
"What is it?" her muffled voice shouted.
"Somehow there are knock-out gases in the vent system. Let's try to get outside, Jonny will be fine in here for now. Come on!" Jessie glanced at Jonny but Hadji pulled her out the door. He took his shirt down from his face and said, "Head for the lighthouse. We'll have IRIS shut down the ventilation system."
"I wonder why it was on in the first place!" was Jessie reply as they ran towards the lighthouse.
Once inside and they were sure the air was fine Hadji demanded, "IRIS shut down vents in the main house!"
     "WORKING… REQUEST COMPLETED."
Jessie added, "IRIS, open all windows and doors in the main house."
     "WORKING…"
"We need to air out the fumes," Jessie explained.
"Good planning, I forgot about that," Hadji admitted.
     "WINDOWS AND DOORS OPENED."
"Come on, let's go check on Jonny. That was some fall down those steps!" Jessie ran out the door, anxious to see if he was okay.
"Wait, Jessie!" Hadji called after her, "We have to wait for the fumes to air out, remember?"
Jessie skidded to a halt in front of the main house. Hadji was right, "Okay, but not too long."
Hadji smiled, "Don't worry. It shouldn't take too long."
`I hope you're right,' Jessie thought.
Q
"Something bothering you, Benton?" Race asked as he watched Dr. Quest stare at the laptop screen.
"Hmm? Oh nothing… just trying to figure out what to write to Jonny."
"You've never had the problem before," Race commented.
"Well Race, I never had to say anything about this certain topic."
"And what would that `certain topic' be?"
"I'm trying to-" Benton broke off and glanced at Race, as if realizing for the first time he was talking to. "Uh… maybe I shouldn't tell you just yet."
Race folded his arms and leaned against the table, "Come on, doc, what's going on? It has to do with what's bugging Jonny, right?"
"Yes…" was Benton's somewhat unsure reply.
"Listen, just tell me and we can clear this up in a matter of minutes."
"It's not that simple, Race," Dr. Quest leaned back and arched his fingers before looking at Race fully, "I'm afraid that love does not rush `in a matter of minutes'."
"What?!" Race asked loudly, he hadn't expected this, "Okay, so who's the girl that you are thinking of and why the hell have you been hiding this?"
Benton shook his head, "Oh great…" he muttered, "I'd really rather not tell you my theory… it's not fully proven."
"Cut the science talk, Benton, this is your son y'know!"
"Okay… this involves you more than you think now. As for the girl…" Benton paused for a moment, considering if he could get out of this, "It's… Jessie."
Q
Jessie was pacing in front of the house, finally she exclaimed, "Aw, come on Hadj! It's been long enough!"
Hadji's back was to Jessie as he answered, "No, wait till everything is aired out…" He turned around to find Jessie gone, "Those two jump into everything…" he shook his head again and ran into the house.
"Hadji… when will he wake up? Will he be okay?" Jessie asked from her kneeling position beside Jonny.
"He should be, but let's get him out of here. The gas is not fully out of the air yet." Jessie nodded and took Jonny's feet. Together Hadji and Jessie took Jonny outside and into the lighthouse. "He was in there for a long time. Jonny might not wake up for a while," Hadji commented.
Jessie watched with worry, not completely understanding the feelings that took over her right now. `What is this feeling…? Am I right in thinking that he's `the one'? I don't know when this happened… maybe it's always been this way,' she started to think back over the years. One memory jumped out at her in full force. She recalled that time on the Ghost Island, something had happened there… something more than what most people thought happened. `That's when I realized… that I- like Jonny. More than a friend…' she wondered now if he felt the same way about her. On that island they had kissed, possessed or not, Jessie was happy that they had. And then there was today… it was Jonny who had set up that Kiss. She remembered his breath against her face and his hand laid gently on the small of her back. Jessie had felt so protected in his arms, as if it were right.
`Jonny… I hope that kiss meant something to you too.' Jessie looked at Jonny, he was still out cold. 'I wonder how long he'll be out of it.'
Hadji studied Jessie's face, she seemed distracted. He wasn't sure what was going on, first it was Jonny… and now Jessie. Maybe he should write to Dr. Quest and tell him of Jessie's change. 'What is going on between them. And what happened today at the theater?' Hadji shrugged and waited silently.
Q
Race barely caught himself as he slipped off the table. "Wha…? Jess?!"
Benton nodded, "Strange that we didn't notice it, huh?" Race rubbed his head.
"I'd never thought that- that they'd be more than friends."
"Whoa! Hold it Race, you're a little ahead of this thing. Something's bugging Jonny about this and I don't think Jessie is even aware that he likes her." He sighed, "I hope to try and get Jonny to talk about it, but he's being stubborn and denying what I say."
Race leaned on the table again and started to consider what Benton said, "I've never noticed. Why didn't I see it coming?"
"That's what I asked myself when I realized this a few days ago," Benton hesitated before continuing on, "Do you remember when Jessie and Jonny were trapped in Cilia's virtual world?" Race nodded grimly, "Well I recall that during the time Jonny was in that `star void' there was this image… Hadji and Jessie, arm-in-arm and walking away." He squinted his eyes in thought.
Race shrugged it off, "So what of it?"
"I think I might have found what's really bugging him," Dr. Quest murmured. "There were many times when we weren't with the kids on their adventures. Remember them telling us of the falcon in Bangalore? Well there seemed to be something they were hiding… same with the encounter with `Elise' in New Orleans. Perhaps there's some reason that causes Jonny to believe that Jessie would never give him a chance… but I doubt that Jessie would just brush him off."
A message popped up  on the laptop reading: `If someone was exposed to knock-out gas for around twenty minutes or so, how long would they be out cold?'
Benton sat forward reading the message, after he read it he replied: `Who is this?'
`Oh, I'm sorry Dr. Quest, I didn't even think about telling you who it was. This is Hadji, but we need the answer.'
`What's happened?' Benton typed. "Race, how long would you say?"
"It depends on the intensity of the gas."
`Race says it depends how strong the gas was/is.'
In a few minutes Hadji replied, `Can you give us an idea of time?'
Race shrugged, "Anywhere from an hour to five hours… it really depends." Benton typed in the answer.
`::Sighs:: That is no good. Try telling Jessie that. We have no idea how strong the gas was, Jessie and I ran out of the house as soon as we detected the smell. Jonny gave us a fair warning.'
`Has anything happened to Jonny?' Benton typed frantically.
`Well right now he's out cold. We're in the lighthouse for now until we are sure the main house is aired out. Jonny's been unconscious for about forty five minutes now and doesn't show any signs of waking… we were just wondering how much longer we'd have to wait.'
`Any idea who did this? And how could somebody get the gas into the house?'
`We were at the movies, the gas was going through the ventilation system. We still have to find out if anything remains. We had IRIS shut down the vents and open all the windows and doors in the main house so hopefully that will help. Jessie and I checked the security cameras and didn't see anything. It's very strange.'
`Okay Hadji, just let me know if Jonny doesn't wake up within an hour or at least let me know what happens.'
`Of course, I'll contact you if we find out anything. Signing off.'
Benton sat staring at the screen. "Who would do this, and why?"
"Who knows, I don't like that the security cameras didn't capture anything. That doesn't make any sense."
"No it doesn't, IRIS is very good at capturing things on camera. I wonder what happened there."
Q
Hadji leaned back in the chair. "So what did they say, Hadj?" Jessie asked.
He sighed, "They're not sure… it depends on how strong the gas was. Race said anywhere from an hour to five hours, all depends."
Jessie rolled her eyes, "Figures that we wouldn't get a straight answer. Where you going to?" She watched as Hadji stood up and headed down the steps.
"I'm going to check the main house and see if it's aired out. Jonny will be more comfortable there."
As soon as he was gone, Jessie turned to watch Jonny. Slowly she reached out a hand to trace the outline of his face. 'I wonder who did this. What, or who, were they after?' It was a question that she hoped would be answered soon.
Q
Rene stared furiously at the black-haired man that stood in front of him, "What do you mean you failed? There is no room for failure in this operation!"
Julia studied, Roger- the black-haired man. Roger repeated, "I did as you asked and put the containers of the knock-out gas into to the system, I even stayed there and turned it on at the right time. But that Bannon girl and Quest's adopted son made it out of the house in time." Roger grinned, "But, Jonny Quest was exposed to that gas long enough to keep him out for at least three hours."
"You were to capture those three kids and bring them back here, is that too much to ask?" Rene demanded. "I don't want to hear your excuses."
"Remember," Julia broke in, "that we have a back up plan… actually a few. One is already set up and is set to go."
"Calm down, Rene," the new voice came, "we'll get those kids yet."
Rene turned to face Surd and commented, "It seems that many of your attempts have failed to get back at the Quests."
"Just wait and see how this turns out. This plan won't fail, I am positive of that." Rene shrugged.
"You had better be right. You are all dismissed."
Q
Hadji and Jessie brought Jonny into his room and laid him on the bed, "There. Come on, let's go eat," Hadji said while turning to walk out the door. Jessie followed a minute later and went down into the kitchen.
"What's there to eat…?" Jessie looked into the refrigerator.

"I think I will try and find out if anything is left of that knock-out gas. I'll look through the security files again, it just doesn't seem right that IRIS didn't pick up anything."
Jessie agreed, "Well I'll go up to my room and read… or something. Night."
     "Good night."
She walked up the stairs and stopped at Jonny's door. Quietly she opened the door and looked in. He still slept on his side, facing the door. Jessie slipped into the room and closed the door again. She sat down on the bed and studied Jonny's face. He seemed to be okay… at least she hoped so. Jessie yawned, "Huh, I didn't think that I was tired. Oh well, I'd better go to bed."
Jessie stood up and was about to leave when she heard Jonny mutter something or other. 'I can't leave him right now!' She realized. She sighed and returned to sit on the bed, she slipped off her shoes and brought her knees to her chest. She sighed and rocked back and forth with her arms wrapped around her legs. She was so tired… but she didn't want to leave him yet.
Again she yawned. She had a thought… 'No, I can't do that! But it's so tempting.' Jessie looked again at the sleeping form. Slowly she slipped the sheet up around her body and she slid down next to Jonny. 'Good thing Dr. Quest and my dad aren't here. They would have a fit!' Her last thought was, 'I hope Hadji doesn't decide to come in here… that would be awkward.'  She smiled, and next to her a small smile had appeared on Jonny's face.
Q
It was late as Jonny slowly opened his eyes the light near his bed was still on, he noticed, and the light hurt his eyes. 'How long have I been out of it…?' He started to sit up but something stirred next to him. "What the-?" He broke off and stared at Jessie. She was sleeping peacefully with her hands under her head. She had a slight smile on her face but as he moved she started to frown.
'Okay then… I guess I'll be staying right here for a while. Not that I mind.' Jonny lay down again and watched Jessie's face. He wondered how long she had been here, 'Wow she's pretty…' he hadn't realized until now how `harmless' she looked. He snorted, Jessie wouldn't like to hear that. She was very capable of protecting herself and she was not one to be useless or harmless.
Slowly he stroked  her face with a gentle hand, 'I love her.' He thought. "Jessie… I love you," he whispered.
Jessie heard his voice, she heard his words. It was all she could do to not sit up and open her eyes but she fought the urge. She'd leave this be for now, she had wakened as she felt Jonny moving beside her. In her mind she replied, 'Y'know what Jonny? I love you too…'
Jonny thought he saw Jessie's expression change, but then he thought he was imaging things. 'Okay, tomorrow I get to work writing that letter that I was going to write today. I need to get all this put down in words.' He yawned, 'But for now I'm tired.'
"Night Jess," he murmured as he drifted off to sleep.
Jessie watched Jonny as he fell asleep again. She wasn't tired anymore, `I love you…' he had said that. About her!
'So my dreams are not impossible. Oh Jonny… this feels so… I don't know how to explain it. Right, unreal? Perfect…' She smiled and she closed her eyes again. As she fell into slumber, her hand reached out and rested gently on Jonny's chest. He smiled and a hand came up to curl around hers.
Q
When Hadji went in at nine o'clock to check on Jonny, he was not prepared for the scene that met his eyes. Jessie lay in the bed next to Jonny, there were content smiles on both their faces and suddenly Hadji had to cover his mouth to keep from laughing. He turned off the main light and closed the door again. 'I wonder how Race and Dr. Quest would take this…' he mused, that reminded him. He had to write to Dr. Quest again.
Hadji made his way downstairs and sat at the computer again. He typed: `Dr. Quest, this is Hadji again. I believe that Jonny is sleeping normally now. I don't think he's still unconscious from that knockout gas.'
In a few minutes the reply was sent: `All right, when he's up tomorrow have him write to me. How's Jessie? I think Race might want to talk with her.'
`Uh… she's already gone to bed.' Hadji left it at that, he didn't think his friends would appreciate him telling their fathers that they were both in the same bed.
`Really? It seems early for her to be in bed.'
`Well she was tired. So am I so I think I'll turn in.'
     `Okay, good night Hadji.'
     `Bye.'
Hadji signed off and went up to his room. Things were getting interesting around here. What would happen next…?
Q
Rene was up at eight o'clock and pacing again, "When will those confounded kids play their little game?"
Julia was growing tired of the man's impatience, "Learn to wait, Barrot. You're starting to get on my nerves. If you want to accomplish anything you have to wait!"
"Shut up, Julia. I didn't have to-"
"Yeah, yeah. Same old story, Barrot, you didn't need to break Surd or I out of jail but you did. Well we are so happy that you did what you did." Her voice was mocking. "Jeremiah isn't very pleased with you. You had better be careful," Julia spun on her heel and walked out of the room.
Rene grabbed the desk and snarled softly, "No,  it's you should be careful."

Julia walked into a room where one whole wall was computer screens, she stood off to the side and watched as Roger and another man went through the Quest compound security cameras. Yesterday they had tapped into the Quest's main computer system IRIS, and had been using their security cameras ever since.
"No movement anywhere," Roger muttered, "Scan through again!"
"Roger," Julia stepped forward, "You are sure that you fixed the security camera readings that those kids can access? We don't want them knowing about us until it's too late for them to do anything."
"Yeah, we deleted the footage of me getting into the compound. Don't worry about it, it'll be fine."
"You had better be right, Rene is being a pain and if we didn't really need him he'd already be gone but as it is he can help us." Julia curled her lip up, "The man's a fool!"
Roger raised an eyebrow and shrugged, "I couldn't say…" Julia gave him a distasteful look before turning towards the door.
"You are to let me know when they leave the compound, or if they start Quest world, understand?"
     "Of course," was the reply.
Q
Jonny woke up the next morning and slowly eased himself out of bed, he was careful not to disturb Jessie as she slept. Quietly he headed towards the door and he was about to open it when he heard a voice behind him, "At least you're better now." Jessie lay on her back and watched Jonny as he turned around to face her.
     "Uh… er… good morning…"
She laughed, "Good morning to you too!" Lowering her voice she asked, "You think Hadji's up yet?"
He shrugged, "I dunno…" Jessie stood up hesitantly and yawned.
"I can't believe that I'm still tired. It's…" glancing at the clock she finished, "already nine thirty. Hadji will most likely be up. I hope he's downstairs…" suddenly she felt embarrassed, she remembered what Jonny had said last night- not knowing that she had heard. 'He said that he loved me… it's strange to believe it.'
Jonny also was avoiding her eyes, he fidgeted and finally he said, "Well maybe you should go before Hadji comes in to see if I'm up yet…"
"Er, yeah. You're right. See you at breakfast then…" Jessie walked to the door and brushed past Jonny. All of the sudden he reached out a hand and caught her wrist, she stopped… her heart beating fast. She turned her head and looked at him in light-headed confusion.
"Jess…" Jonny started, 'What do I say? What do I tell her? Oh forget it… I'll do this later.' "Sorry, never mind."
She looked disappointed for a second before nodding. He loosened his grasp on her and she slipped out into the hallway and into her room to change clothes.
Q
Within five minutes, Jonny was dressed and downstairs. Hadji was in the kitchen preparing some breakfast for himself. As he spotted Jonny walk in a slight smile played on his face. Hiding it he asked, "I guess I'll have to make you breakfast too…"
"Naw, that's okay Hadj." Jonny yawned, "I'm not too hungry."
Hadji turned away so as not to show his friend the look on his face, "Um… you sleep well?" He asked innocently.
Jonny looked at him wandering exactly what he meant by that statement. He didn't have a chance to make a comment on it though as Jessie walked in. The blond-haired boy stood in complete shock, as he looked her over.
She wore a green tank top that clung to her like a second skin. She wore a black skirt that reached her lower-thigh. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail with a single strand of hair outlining her face. Overall, she was incredible… especially in Jonny's opinion.
Finally Jessie scuffed her foot on the floor while looking down and playing with the loose strand of hair. "Just thought I'd try something different…" she muttered softly.
Lost for words was an understatement as Jonny stood there opening and closing his mouth quietly. It was Hadji who finally spoke, "It looks great Jess."
Jonny immediately felt upset and jealous. 'I should have taken my chance to complement her… now it's too late. It'll just seem like I'm trying to be polite…'
Jessie glanced expectantly at Jonny, worry in her eyes. He still didn't say anything and he seemed to be… frowning… Her heart fell suddenly and she walked farther into the room.
Hadji noticed the tension in the room so he asked, "Hungry… anyone?" Jonny didn't respond and Jessie just nodded.
"Um… I'll be back… soon…" Jonny stammered before heading out the back door. Once outside he ran towards the cliffs where Cilia had faced her doom a few days before. Being careful not to get too close to the edge, he sat on the grass about five feet before the drop off.
Q
Jessie and Hadji sat at the kitchen table, neither saying anything. Finally Hadji coughed, Jessie was startled out of her day dreaming state. "Hmm?"
Hadji laughed slightly, "Jessie… please tell me what's going on!"
     "…"
"Jess," Hadji looked at her skeptically, "let me know what passed between you and Jonny at the Movie Theater the other day… AND why the world you stayed in Jonny's- er… `room' all last night!"
She blushed fiercely and muttered, "I have no idea-" she was broken off by Hadji's glare. "Oh…!' She exclaimed, frustrated. Hadji smiled, knowing he had won.
     "So?"
Jessie sighed, "Fine, fine! I'm getting there…" she slowly told him about the kiss at the movie… how suddenly it had come. Then she quickly explained about last night. Muttering here and there. She ended, "Hadj… he said-" she stopped and looked at her hands, "he said that- that he loved me… he didn't know that I heard…"
Hadji looked at his friend sadly, wondering how he would be able to help. "I don't know, he's never talked to me about things like this before," He sighed, "This is what I'll do. Right now I'll go out and talk to him… try to get his side of the whole thing. Okay?"
"Thanks Hadji!" Jessie smiled and finally lifted her head, "You're a great friend!" She leaned over and gave him a hug in thanks.
The next thing they knew, a door was opening… a gasp of surprise, and then running feet. "What the-?"
Q
Jonny had decided it was long enough that he had hidden, "About time I go back in…" he muttered. Standing, he brushed himself off and walked towards the house. He sighed as he reached the back door. He lifted his hand to the knob and turned it. After getting halfway through the door he looked up to see Jessie giving Hadji a warm embrace. With a gasp of surprise and sadness, Jonny turned on his heel and ran back out the door.
'I don't have a chance… it was true. She's not interested in me… I had to be right, it's Hadji she's interested in…' tears slowly fell down his cheeks as he jumped on one of the hoverboards and took off towards the main gate. Shaking his head, he passed through onto the road.
"Jess…" he whispered as tears blinded him again. Angrily he wiped the tears away and slowed down. He took deep breaths before thinking the scene through again… maybe it wasn't really `that kind of' hug. Maybe it was that of the one exchanged between friends. He could hope, couldn't he? "Who am I kidding?" He shook his head but turned back to the compound anyway. He couldn't hide like this forever.
Q
"Miss Julia… er, someone left the compound but has returned again."
"Forget it then, that's useless information!" The woman snapped. She was becoming impatient and was getting annoyed at Rene's behavior. 'This had better work.'
Q
"What the-?" Jessie started. As she glimpsed the blur of familiar blond hair she gasped in distress. "Oh! Jonny!" She stood up quickly and walked to the door and looked out. He was already gone, "Jonny!" She ran, looking for him. Finally she spotted him moving out the front gate on his hoverboard. 'Did he think…? But…'
Jessie broke her thoughts off as a hand rested on her shoulder, "Can I guess who that was?" Hadji asked grimly.
The red-haired girl sank down onto the front steps. Resting her head in her hands she began, "I think I know why he's distressed over it. He thought… that… you, me…" her shoulders shrugged slightly, "I don't think he was thinking straight otherwise he wouldn't have gotten so worked up over this."
Hadji silently agreed as Jessie continued, she swallowed, "I don't know Hadj… I just get this feeling when I've been around him lately… a sense of comfort, sometimes longing." She laughed softly, "I never thought I'd feel this way about someone."
That's when it was Hadji's turn to laugh softly, as Jessie turned to him he told her, "You two are practically made for each other! I don't know if Race and Dr. Quest have figured out yet that something might happen between you two. I've seen it coming for a long time!"
     `What?" She demanded.
Before he could answer, Jonny returned through the gates on the hoverboard. He went past them and headed towards the lighthouse. Jessie stood up and called, "Jonny! Jonny!" He didn't acknowledge her. "Jonathan Quest!" She shouted. "Ooo!" she fumed, "sometimes…"
"I'll go talk to him. You stay here," Hadji informed her. She nodded and silently hoped this would work.
Getting up, Hadji looked to Jonny who had reached the lighthouse by that time. Giving Jessie an encouraging smile he walked off, 'I sure hope Jonny will listen…'
Q
The blond boy walked slowly inside the lighthouse and ran his fingers lightly over the computers. 'I betcha any minute now one of them will come in here and- oh, there they come now!' Jonny looked sideways as Hadji walked into the room. Somehow he couldn't make himself say anything to greet his friend…
'Maybe what I saw in the kitchen was nothing… it couldn't be, could it?'     Jonny was starting to wonder exactly what had happened. Perhaps he should let them explain… but what if it had meant something? He wouldn't be able to deal with that at the moment.
"My friend, what all is troubling you?" Hadji started, unsure of how to start the conversation. As a minute passed with no reply Hadji took a deep breath, 'Nothing like the direct approach…' "Jonny. It was not what you think-"
"How do you know what I think?" Suddenly the younger boy spun around and shouted angrily. Hadji stepped back, Jonny wasn't like this… not at all. Especially not towards his friends or family.
"Now… now let me explain-" Hadji stuttered, gaining control again, "If you listen then I can explain. If not, we're both going to get on each other's nerves. Jessie was just explaining what's been happening lately. More than I can say that you've done… but that's not the point. Finally I said that'd I would talk to you. She was grateful and that's when you walked in… she was just hugging me in thanks, Jonny."
The blond boy turned away as he feared that his face would give all of his emotions away. "Haji… I'm sorry I yelled… it's just that… just that…" he trailed off and hung his head, before whispering, "it was nothing more?"
Hadji nodded and said softly, "Nothing more. Now come on… let's get going okay?"
"Hmm? Oh…" he trailed off, "Um… in a moment. I need to think about something."
"Okay… but hurry up, this hiding game is going on far too long."
Jonny turned to face his friend, his adopted brother, "Thanks, Hadj…"
     "Anytime, my friend."
When Jonny was alone again he sat down in one of the chairs. Sighing he rubbed his head and let everything sink in… the past few days had been too much and he was so confused…
Q
Rene stood in his study facing out the window. Though an uptight man he did have the ability to be patient for the things that he truly wanted…
'Fools… they don't know what they are dealing with! Cilia was nothing, though her loss has hurt my plans I do have others to take her place…'
Muttering impatiently to himself, he paced back and forth. It was taking forever for the Quest team kids to load up their game… if this continued, plans would have to be redone. Cursing softly Rene walked out of the room to find if anything had happened yet.
Q
'I thought you were going to type that letter today…' Jonny thought to himself, shaking his head he knew it was the wrong way. 'Oh Jess… why is this so complicated!?'
"Jonny?" It was Hadji again, he stood over his friend looking slightly exasperated, "You've been sitting her for a long time now… c'mon, Jessie can't wait forever you know…"
Turning his head sharply to his friend Jonny asked, "What? You knew…?"
"Um… let me just say I made an educated guess…"
     "Was I that obvious?"
"No… but…" Hadji smiled slightly, "there are some things that are easy to guess my friend… like ahem last night…"
Jonny blushed slightly, "thought you'd come in…" he muttered. Hadji laughed slightly:
"It's okay my friend… I understand and I'll be sure not to tell Race or Dr. Quest…"
Jonny's eyes widened, "They would flip!" suddenly both of them laughed, it relived the tension in the air and Jonny stood up. Sucking in his breath he let it out before saying, "Okay… I think I'm ready to face her now…"
They were just about out the door when Jonny paused and whispered, "Um… Hadj…  I don't think I can do this…"
Hadji sighed, "Come on Jonny… she's waiting…" there was a slight undertone in his voice, Jonny looked at him questioningly and got a slight nod from his friend. His confidence raised ten fold and he smiled.
Q
Jessie still sat on the porch steps waiting for Hadji and Jonny to return, 'Oh jeez… I wonder what happened… and did Jonny listen…? She felt like she was losing her sanity, and just as she was about to stand up and find out what was going on when she noted both boys walking towards her.
She waited as her heart sped up and beat three times the normal rate. Hadji nodded his head to Jonny, giving an encouraging smile before disappearing into the house. After a minute of silence Jessie slowly sank to the steps again, finally Jonny broke the silence, "Well… um…" he scratched the back of his head in nervousness.
The red-haired girl laughed slightly, he was just too cute when he was confused. That seemed to break the tension and Jonny grinned, "What?"
Smiling, Jessie replied, "You're too funny when you're nervous. Why don't you just get it out and over with already? I don't have all day you know!"
Slowly a smile crept up onto his face as he sat down beside her, "Okay then… where to begin…? Maybe I'll explain the whole thing later but for now I ought to get to the point, hmm?"
"Yeah… that would be a good idea."
"Well Jess, for a long time now…" he broke off, "well… it's just that for a long time now we've been best friends, y'know? But then some time back… it was like I realized just how much you meant…" he studied her face carefully, noting the anxious look. Swallowing, he continued:
"And Jess… I can't believe how much has happened to us… but… what I'm trying to say is- I think I love you…?" he finished off as a slight question and he averted his eyes, fear of rejection was apparent.
Jessie had to smile; she couldn't help it…
Surprise overtook Jonny's senses as Jessie leaned on his shoulder and looked up at him, "And what are you afraid of? I do not bite, I hope you know!" her face softened, "I'm glad you told me when I was more awake this time… last night's confession seemed like a dream…"
"WHA-? You heard that…?" Jonny seemed slightly upset, but yet he wasn't fully… she hadn't turned him away in disgust… was it possible-?
"Uh-huh… but that doesn't matter at the moment. Because you know what?" she leaned over a little more to whisper in his ear, "I think I love you too…" smiling at the reaction on Jonny's face, Jessie almost pulled away when an arm wrapped around her shoulder.
"Jessie, I had never wanted to tell you… I was just so scared you'd turn me away or something… and I never thought…" he trailed off as he searched her eyes.
She laughed lightly, "Why do you think I let you kiss me at the movie?" he shook his head to clear away his confusement:
"I just don't know anymore… everything is just so confusing!"
"Then let me reassure you," Jessie leaned over and kissed him lightly on the cheek. After his shock started to fade she added, "Now c'mon! I'm up to a good game of Quest World! I'm gonna beat ya too!"
"No way, not unless I let you- which I'm not!"
Grinning Jessie shook her head in mock-pity, "Ah Jonny, you are so wrong! I'm going to win! Now let's get Hadj to monitor us…."
"Already here!" Hadji said coming out of the front door.
Jonny groaned, "You listened to the whole things didn't you?"
"And why not?" was the laughing reply.
"Hadji! It wasn't any of your business!" Jessie told him in joking anger.
"Well are you two going to do Quest World or not? And yes it is my business. And I'm terribly happy that this has all worked out," Hadji walked past them with a smile still on his face.
"Yeah, yeah we're coming Hadj!" Jonny called as he took Jessie's hand and they walked off towards the lighthouse.
Q
"Logging into Quest World…" Hadji typed as he said the vocal commands, "subjects Jonny Quest and Jessie Bannon… goin' hot!"
Jonny and Jessie sat in the specially designed VR chairs as their virtual reality headpiece let loose the bright green visor. Suddenly a frown appeared on Jessie's face, "Weren't we supposed to be doing a racing game?"
"Yeah…" Jonny was looking confused and worried now too. Hadji joined his friends as he looked at the screen. "Hadj, where are we?!"
"I have no idea my friend… it's like you're not in Quest World… or at least nothing that we designed."
Jessie broke in, "So it was someone else who did this… let me guess…" her voice was sarcastic.
"Surd," Jonny finished for her, "Now what's he up to?"
Hadji was looking at the screen nervously, "I don't see anything on here… but I can't let you stay in, I'm going to pull you out."
He walked over to his friends and touched Jonny's ear piece, Hadji and Jonny both let out a cry of pain as the ear piece shocked them both. Hadji stumbled back and watched as Jonny slumped forwards slightly.
     "This is not good…"
Q
Jessie caught Jonny as he fell forward, "Hadji! What's going on up there? Hadji? Hadji?!" An all too familiar voice echoed through the VR world:
"Why look who's come to play! It's Jessie Bannon and Jonny Quest… fascinating!" Surd's mechanized voice laughed loudly.
"Show yourself Surd!" Jessie shouted as she lay Jonny on the ground, he hadn't recovered yet.
"But he's not really here, my dear girl," the new voice came from a new direction. Finally a man in complete black strode forward, mocking a bow he raised his head to show emerald-colored eyes and sandy brown hair. "I have an offer to make you, either you can give up now and come with me. Or, you can do your best to get away and have me chase you all over. In the end, it'll all turn out the same."
Jessie answered with, "Activate hover chariot!" She jumped on quickly and pulled a recovering Jonny on in front of her. The man hissed angrily as she sped away.
"Huh…? Whad I miss?" Jonny asked, he slowly stood up straight and took the controls from Jess. She in turn wrapped her arms around his waist to stay on.
"Well you missed an interesting character… I have no idea who he is but he thinks that we'll be caught."
"That's interesting… now who would be after us now?" Jonny asked in an exasperated tone.
Jessie just shrugged, "Some new world-wide evil guy…" she trailed off as both of them laughed.
An explosion in front of them sent them back into reality though and quickly Jonny steered out of the way of the flying debris. "He means business!" He tried vainly to glimpse the man who was following behind them on another hover chariot. Strange, but the man seemed to be herding them…
     "I don't like this…" Jonny commented.
"Well neither to I but I'm not driving! Look out will ya? I'll watch this weirdo behind us."
"Oops! Sure…" Jonny turned around again and swerved around a falling piece of building.
     "What?!" Jessie cried suddenly.
Distracted, Jonny turned around, "What happened?"
     "He's- he's gone!"
Jonny peered behind them, "He is… wonder what he did. You sure he didn't go another way?"
"Positive, it was just weird. I was watching him when suddenly he disappeared!"
"Oh really?" The third voice snapped Jessie's and Jonny's faces around to see the man hovering before them. "Hello again. I've decided that I don't have time to play these childish games so I'm ending it."
Before they knew what was happening, a large swirling hole appeared in the air. The man vanished and left the two teens alone as they tried to move or turn away from the `thing'.
"What in the heck is that?" Jessie demanded, looking back as her hair whipped around her face while Jonny tried to turn around.
     "Jess… I can't get out of here!"
"Keep trying… we have no idea what this thing is!"
Jonny only nodded in agreement but suddenly the hole started to draw them nearer until finally both Jessie and Jonny were pulled through.
"WHAT'S HAPPENING…?" Jessie shouted as she tried to reach Jonny's hand.
"I don't know!" and then everything stopped.
Q
Hadji looked from his computer screen to his friends with a worried expression. Typing frantically, he was still unable to get a very clear picture of what was going on. Suddenly Jessie and Jonny cried out:
     "What's happening??"
     "I don't know!"
Looking up, Hadji's eyes widened with shock, "No! How can this be?!" Open-mouthed, all he could do was watch as his two friends flickered before fading. "WHAT THE-?!" But they were gone, completely vanished.
"I must contact Dr. Quest right away!" Quickly he brought up the visual-aided phone on the computer.
As soon as Benton Quest's face appeared Hadji looked at him in despair, not knowing where to start. Noticing the far-away look, Benton immediately started asking questions, "Hadji, what's wrong? What's going on? Are you okay?"
Race appeared over Dr. Quest's shoulder and Hadji shook himself out of his distracted state. "I'm completely clueless on how it happened but suddenly we loaded up Quest World, when we did it wasn't the right area-"
"Here we go again…" both men sighed.
Hadji broke in again, "Now here's what's interesting, I couldn't log them out and again I couldn't clear the screens well enough to see what was going on! But that's not it! Jonny and Jessie have disappeared!"
There was silence for a moment before Race and Benton shouted out, "What do you mean `disappeared'??"
"I mean they're gone! Vanished- into thin air no less!"
     "WHAT?!" Race cried.
     "How can that be possible?"
Hadji looked upset, "I don't know but suddenly I hear them yelling at each other, I look up and they're fading! They're not here anymore and they were sitting right in front of me!"
Benton was standing up, "We're heading home… now. You see what you can do okay? We'll be there as soon as possible!"
"Yes Dr. Quest, I will see you then."
The face nodded and signed off. Hadji sunk back into the chair again, "Oh no… not something like this again…" he muttered under his breath, "Wonder what is with the Jessie-Jonny captures lately…"

Strange story? I've always loved the idea of the Jonny-Jessie relationship. Though this is a poor piece of writing, I hope it's okay to read. I need feedback badly so please e-mail me: seiya_usagi_fan@yahoo.com
