Description: I am a student at Stanford University studying International Health and Medical Anthropology. I will be traveling to the 9th region of Chile in July/August of 2001 to volunteer at Hospital Makewe and do research for an honors thesis in the Department of Latin American Studies. My topic is the integration of Mapuche medicine with Western biomedicine (disease classification, traditional healers, herbal therapy, Mapuche beliefs on health, healing, and treatment etc...). I am interested in the preservation of traditional indigenous medical beliefs and practices and also interested in how healers, doctors, clinics, and hospitals can merge the two systems of medicine. I believe the two healing systems are not mutually exclusive and they can be properly combined to achieve the best of both worlds. However, I am wary of the strong forces of globalization and urbanization and their impact on traditional Mapuche healing. If you have any experience, interest, or resources pertaining to Mapuche health and its erosion, preservation or integration, I would love to correspond with you."
