Too Smooth album review by Aaron M

TOO SMOOTH
 (Tiger Lily)
One of the rarest and most sought-after Tiger Lily albums is this cool southern rock album, which treads the line between major label competence and garage-band ambience.  Lyrics are druggy, guitars are swampy, and, in most cases, the vocals are appealingly snotty.  The songs with a more harmony-oriented approach are less distinctive, but they shift from soft to loud, soft to heavy, at the drop of a hat and nothing here is wimpy at all.  There’s plenty of lead guitar everywhere, peaking with a killer solo on “You Say When”.  This record has a definite 70s feel to it, but doesn’t really sound like any particular band I can think of.  I would guess fans of bands like J. Teal or Nitzinger and would like it more than, say, Allman Brothers or Outlaws fans, since songs are compact, not overly bluesy and have no country influence.  This isn’t as good as the very best Tiger Lily albums, but it’s quite solid, surely better than the vast majority of private press rarities and is a heck of a find for genre fans. [AM]

I think this is the same "Too Smooth" that were a popular club band in Central Texas in the mid-to-late 70s. My big memory of them was a gig they did with the re-formed Bubble Puppy circa 1978. Too Smooth was slated to do an acoustic set...followed by Bubble Puppy...leading up to a Too Smooth electric set. Only trouble was that 3/4 of the audience split after the Puppy finished playing...leaving a dejected Too Smooth to blast their A-level material to a pitifully small audience of stragglers.

A while back I asked Ashley Johnson about Too Smooth group which had 1 Lp on Tiger Lily Label is not related to the club band out of Texas.

Interesting... one should bear in mind that the tax-scam labels often changed and invented brand new names for the bands they "released". Still it would be cool if this Too Smooth was a real Texas deal, but if Ashley J says no we have to go with that.

This album indeed is from the Too Smooth based out of Austin, Texas from 1973 to 1981.  About the time these comments were being made, the fans of Too Smooth gathered from hither and yon and the band got back together for several reunion shows.  A Facebook page is now the center of news about the band members.  Old recordings, including those from the Tiger Lily sessions have been pressed into a couple CD's called "Still" and "Live and Kickin'".  Come visit us on the Facebook page and see what its all about.
