1. Adding and Editing Tips in the ProgramVersions 6.2 and above allow you to edit existing Tips and add new tips of your own. To edit an existing tip: Click "Tips" on the brown navigation bar at the bottom of the screen and view a tip. Click the pencil icon to view in Edit View. Now you can edit the tip to add to or reword it. To create a new tip: Open any tip and press the pencil icon to view in Edit View. From the top menu bar, select File > New Tip. (You must be in edit view to see the New Tip option.) Give your new tip a title and enter the text as you would for a recipe. You can also add a picture if you wish. To delete a tip, first view the tip. Press the pencil icon to view in Edit View. From the top menu bar, select File > Delete Tip. (You must be in edit view to see the Delete Tip option.) Confirm that you want to permanently delete the tip. Be sure to keep your Tips files backed up: MC Tips.mtf There is one bug related to this portion of the program that you should be aware of. It's been passed along to ValuSoft and is on their "to do" list, so hopefully they'll be addressing it in the future. Until then, try avoiding the steps to cause the bug to appear. Here's how to spot the bug (so you can avoid it): _____________ Go to Tips. Press the Pencil icon along the right. The tip now opens in the Edit mode. Select COOKBOOKS from the bottom of the screen. Open any cookbook. Select a recipe and press the Pencil icon. It refuses to open the Edit screen. Press the icon to open in Display mode. (Recipe opens in Display mode.) Now try pressing the Pencil icon. At this point the program doesn't function properly and wants to shutdown and reports low system resources (on WinXP?!??? huh?) I'd recommend you ignore (that works) rather than let Windows shutdown the program. We all know that Windows doesn't shut the program down properly (to cause the program to compress its files properly, etc.) Something fishy is wrong here. It's like it can't draw the Edit screen for a recipe after drawing the Edit screen for the Tips. The program won't function correctly until you close the program and relaunch it again and avoid doing all the above. Sometimes the program will crash, too! [ Top of Page ] 2. Backup & Merge UtilityI recently learned from ValuSoft that if you have two cookbooks by the same name (i.e. two My Cookbooks) in different version numbers, when you use the MERGE function in the Backup and Merge window, it will use the most recent cookbook file date. Simply opening the cookbook in MasterCook causes date of the cookbook file to be adjusted. (For example, after opening a cookbook in MasterCook, use Windows Explorer to see that the date for the file has been changed to when you last opened that cookbook file.) So, those that are reporting that your "My Cookbook" in version 6.2 is NOT being merged into the version 8 "My Cookbook", try opening the "My Cookbook" in version 6.2. Close the program. This causes the date of that cookbook file to change, making it the "newest" version of the file. Then launch the MasterCook Backup & Merge window. Tell it to merge your v6.2 "My Cookbook" and it will replace the v8 one which is marked with an "older" file date. If you open the version 8 "My Cookbook" file, the Merge utility will see that it is the latest version (has the most recent date stamp for the file), so it won't replace it when merging. Perhaps in a future version we can get a prompt about which file we want to keep -- the v6.2 or the v8 "My Cookbook" file. Until then, hopefully this explanation will help you understand why it currently does what it does. [ Top of Page ] 3. Changing MasterCook's LooksQ: I heard there is a way to change the look of MasterCook 5+. How do I do this? A: There is a file in the MC Tools folder called MC Branding.mbf. If you have more than one MasterCook 5.x or 6.x title, you can change the MC Branding.mbf file. This file gives MasterCook the watermarks throughout, the Contents screen, as well as the screen that is showing while MasterCook is loading. You can copy the MC Branding.mbf file off the CD of your choice and replace it with the one on your computer. For example, if you currently have the Betty Crocker look and would rather have the look of Cooking Light, you can copy the MC Branding.mbf file from the Cooking Light CD and replace the MC Branding.mbf file inside the MC Tools folder on your computer. Do you want a holiday look for your MasterCook 5.x or 6.x program? The holiday branding file is available from here: ftp://ftp2.sierra.com/pub/goodies/pc/HolidayUpdate.exe The HolidayUpdate.exe file on Sierra's site is an installation file and will install the MC Branding.mbf file into the MC TOOLS folder for you. (Please review the instructions during the installation.) It will work if you have a single installation of SierraHome's MasterCook version 5.x or 6.0 (only one MC TOOLS folder on your computer). However, if you have more than one installation of versions 5.x/6.x, the installer (HolidayUpdate.exe file from Sierra's site) won't let you choose which directory to install into. If you let it install into your version 5.0 MC TOOLS folder, then you could copy the MC BRANDING.MBF file to a selected version 6.x MC TOOLS folder. [ Top of Page ] 4. Cleaning Empty Categories From All CookbooksQ: When I do a search on categories, I see many categories that were previously deleted in the list that don't have any recipes. How do I get rid of them? A: Refresh your file list by hitting the F5 key on your keyboard or by selecting Refresh File List from the Tools menu. You can remove empty categories by deleting a recipe from a cookbook. When you do this you will be prompted to delete any empty categories in this cookbook. [ Top of Page ] 5. Corrupt Cookbooks in MC 5 or 6Have you tried the suggestions in 6. MASTERCOOK: Things to Try When MC 5 or 6 Won't Open below, but the program *still* won't open? You may have a corrupt cookbook. Here's how to find out. Leave MasterCook alone -- don't have it open. Use Windows Explorer to move *all* your personal cookbooks to a new, empty folder on your hard drive. (If you have had trouble opening just a single cookbook, move only that one cookbook. If you still have trouble, move them all out.) Then try to open MC. If it does open, press F5 from the cookbook browser window to refresh your file list. Does MC work now? Can you open the cookbooks that came with your program? Can you search them? If you can, then one of your personal cookbooks is corrupt. Find the culprit by closing MC, then moving one cookbook at a time into MC's My Cookbook folder and test it as above (refresh file list, open the cookbook, search it). If MC hangs up at any of the steps, you've found your problem child. Close MC and move that cookbook back out to the spare folder again, and finish testing the rest of your books. If MC did not open, then you will need to uninstall and reinstall following the instructions in this subheading: 4. Uninstalling and Reinstalling MasterCook 5 or this one: 5. Uninstalling and Reinstalling Sierra's MC 6.0. Make very sure you go back and delete any leftover MC folder and contents before you reinstall, and allow the removal of "shared files" during the uninstall. You can leave your personal cookbooks in that separate spare folder while you do this -- and do not let the installer search for other MC cookbooks at this time (but see note below). Make sure that the basic installation works and perform any necessary patching. Then you can test your cookbooks as above by adding them to the new installation one by one. If you do have a corrupt cookbook and it contains irreplaceable recipes (not just recipes from the exchange list) there is a corrupt cookbook recovery program, so let us know and we can direct you further. Unfortunately, e-mail programs can mangle recipes and cause problems like this. Please look over our recommendations for avoiding this sort of problem in the future: Safe Importing Guidelines. NOTE: It is always best to have a backup of your cookbooks on floppies or other removable media. Your personal cookbooks *should* be OK in a totally separate folder, but there are no guarantees. If you can, you might want to send each personal cookbook file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, just for insurance. [ Top of Page ] 6. Easter EggWe have recently learned of an Easter Egg in MasterCook! Look for it in version 5.x or version 6.x. (Surely you have heard of Easter Eggs in other programs? If not, go use your favorite search engine and search the Internet and try to find some Easter Eggs for other programs you use -- Word, Excel, etc.) What can I do with it? Well, you know since the beginning of time how we wanted to remove the nutritional summary from printing in the meal plans with versions 5.x/6.x, but we can't because we are NOT allowed to edit the print design for meal plans? This Easter Egg gives us a backdoor into editing that design. Yippee!! URGENT WARNING: Please use caution! I will NOT be responsible for any problems you encounter while playing with this toy nor will I claim to be able to help you out if you get stuck!! You are own your own! Since this is an Easter Egg and not part of the program that has even been mentioned before you are entering UNKNOWN TERRITORY. Tech Support will NOT! be able to help you, so don't even try that route. I recently learned of this myself, so you can bet you would learn more by exploring on your own. As always, it is a GREAT idea to back up your important MasterCook files (cookbooks, designs, etc.) before playing. If you get in a tangle, you could always uninstall/reinstall the program. If you accidentally save over the top of a design that came with the program you can get the original by copying it off the CD, etc. If all else fails, post a message on the board and maybe another user has figured it out and will reply back. However, I will share with you how I figured out a way to edit a meal plan. See below. (Please don't attempt this unless you are really familiar with this program and know how to edit a print design.)
1. Launch the program and get to the Edit Print Design screen. (If you don't know how to get this far, you might want to play with the program a bit more and gain some more experience before continuing.) Have fun and please be sure to share with the rest of us anything fun and new you discover!!! Maybe you will be able to assist others who need help. [ Top of Page ] 7. MasterCook 6 (SierraHome) à la Carte TitlesFor those who have been wanting to try MasterCook 6 AND have a Sam's Club store nearby, there is a FREE copy of MasterCook à la Carte The Cooking Light Collection bundled with a three-flavor pack of Crystal Light fruitade mix ($6.99 at my Sam's). This offer is only available at Sam's Clubs. This offer may also be found at BJ's (on the East Coast) as well as at Sam's Clubs. This is NOT a full-featured version. You can view the cookbook recipes (200+ included), search, and perform many other functions, but you cannot add your personal recipes to the program. You CAN, however, directly download recipes from the Sierra Recipe Library into the My Cookbook included. Neat feature! ********* UPDATE: The MasterCook.com web site no longer exists. ********* This comes from the readme.txt file on the Crystal Light CD: [QUOTE] The MasterCook.com cookbook has been included in your MasterCook a la Carte software so that you can add to your library recipes from www.mastercook.com. I was at Office Max on June 4, 2001 and saw it on the shelf for $9.99. Great buy! It was in a jewel case only and didn't contain a manual. However, the PDF file (electronic manual) is included on the CD. Someone else posted on the message board in May 2001 that they saw it at Barnes and Noble. At B&N it was available in a small box (about the size of the Prevention magazine) for $14.95. It was spotted at Barnes and Noble on a shelf near the cooking magazines. Here's the scoop... This is version 6.01.81. It is a "viewer" version (read: it is missing some functionality of v6.0), so you cannot edit the recipes or check spelling, etc. However, most of the functionality from the navigation bar along the bottom (Search, Shopping, Favorites, etc.) works. The product contains 2 cookbooks: My Cookbook and Prevention's The Healthy Cook. Prevention's The Healthy Cook contains 493 recipes -- about 65 contain recipe pictures. The My Cookbook included with this product has a "recipe" which explains how to import recipes from MasterCook.com: [START] 1. Select the MasterCook Web Site icon from the toolbar. Cooking Light 6.0 Collection: [ Top of Page ] 11. MasterCook Yucky ColorQ. How do I change MasterCook's color. It's Green-yellow-yucky color. A. The colors you see depend on the video driver. To find out how your Display is setup, use the Control Panel: Display. There are several tabs to explore to see how things are configured. The Settings tab will tell you if windows is using a generic driver or the one designed for your monitor. You can select the right video as an "advanced" option. You may be able to adjust the colors. click "advanced" and the "color" tab. MasterCook 5 recommends using SVGA 800x600 resolution; small fonts and High Color (16 bit). If you are currently using 256 colors, try the High Color (16 bit) settings. You may need to select a different color scheme to go with the 16-bit color palette. I have my settings at True Color (32 bit), and it definitely looks much better than the 16 bit for me. The 16 bit produces this ugly peachy color for me. However the 32 bit setting gives it more of the tan color that it is suppose to be that matches the buttons and navigation bar at the bottom. [ Top of Page ] 12. Networking MasterCook to Access CookbooksNETWORK DRIVE -- From: Bill Hatcher (BH) This works great on Windows XP Pro and I suspect it probably will with XP Home but I don't have a computer with Home installed on it so can't test it. On the computer and physical hard drive on which you want your "Network Drive" to be located, create a new folder and name it NETWRKDRIVE. The following is copied from Win XP Pro HELP: On that same computer: - - - Open My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive. In Drive, select a drive letter. [BH - It is a good idea to select a letter near the end of the alphabet to preclude problems later - I use "Z" for mine.] In Folder, type the server and share name of the computer or folder you want. \\servername\sharename. -or- Click Browse to find the computer or folder. NOTES: To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop. To reconnect to the mapped drive every time you log on, select the Reconnect at logon check box. Mapped drives are available only when the host computer is available. Network drives are assigned letters from Z to A, and local drives (your hard drive and removable storage devices) are assigned letters from A to Z. You can assign a computer or shared folder to a different drive letter by disconnecting from the drive and then reassigning it to a new drive letter. BH again. I have 4 computers on my home network (yeah, I know, a bit of overkill, since there is only me, my wife and 2 dogs living here! ) all with access to the network drive and I find this invaluable in moving files from one machine to another. Just copy files to Network drive on one machine and open them on another. This works like a champ with MC. On one machine I have the original MC6 and on the host machine MC 6.2. I have a Cookbooks folder located on the Network drive (I also have the "regular" Cookbook folder on each machine separately.) and I can access (read/write) the cookbooks on the Network Drive with no problem. I want to keep the default location for both MC 6 and 6.2 as their own Cookbook folder, so when I open a cookbook from the Network Drive, I do so by opening the program I want to use, then navigate to the cookbook I want by clicking File>Open and then browsing to the Cookbook folder on the Networ k Drive. The Network Drive shows as Drive Z on all 4 machines in Windows Explorer, and can be accessed as any of the "regular" drives can. One of the handiest features I have found. I have 3 machines with Win XP Pro and one with Windows Me, and this works fine with all of them (host machine uses Win XP) and while I don't KNOW it would work with other OS's, I see no reason why it wouldn't, assuming the machine is otherwise working okay on the network, but it would probably be easiest to host the NW drive on an XP machine. [ Top of Page ] 13. Opening Program Without Restore Previous ViewDo you have Restore Previous View selected in your Preferences but would like to start the program and go right to the Contents screen? Hold down the SHIFT key, then doubleclick the icon to launch MasterCook. That will disable "Restore Previous View" (for that session) and the program will open to the CONTENTS screen. Note that you will need to doubleclick the desktop icon, even if you have your settings configured to otherwise open with a single click. [ Top of Page ] 14. Other Applications to Use with MC - MC-TagItGail Shermeyer has created a program to use with MasterCook 5+. MC-TagIt is a utility designed to convert standard recipe export formats into the new MasterCook XML-tagged import format. If you do not use MasterCook version 5 or 6, you do not need this utility. In addition to interpreting MasterCook versions II, 3 and 4 and MealMaster recipe exports, MC-TagIt also has it's own generic format enabling you to easily import generic text recipes as a group into MasterCook 5.x/6.x without going through the Import Assistant one by one. System and Software Requirements: You can go here to get it: [ Top of Page ] 15. Running Videos From the Hard DriveQ: I would like to be able to run the videos from the hard drive. Is it possible? A: Simply copy the videos anywhere in the MasterCook folder, I would suggest creating a folder called "videos" and then placing them in there. Leave the program CD out of the drive. Go to Tips and choose a tip. You will now see a dialog box that tells you that it cannot find the video but gives you the option to browse for it. Click BROWSE and navigate to the place on your hard drive where all the videos are. Find the specific video you want to view and double-click on it. The program will now register all the video being on the hard drive. To undo this and go back to viewing from the CD repeat the above process. [ Top of Page ] 16. Slow to LoadOne thing you could do to make MasterCook 5.x/6.x load faster is to go to Edit/Preference and under the General tab, you could remove the checkmark from the box that says Restore Previous View upon Start-up. This will make MasterCook load up faster, because it doesn't have to remember where you were when you last used the program. So, we have two choices: check it but remember to close with a small cookbook or uncheck it and start with the content screen. I just did a test, I searched for "apple pie" as a phrase, in all available cookbooks. It took 7 minutes and 43 seconds, returned 33 hits, and I have 41 cookbooks. Next I did an Advanced search for Apple Pie as a title, it took 6 minutes, 23 seconds. Finally, I just repeated the search, but this time disabled my McAfee Virus Shield. That cut the time down to 4 minutes, 12 seconds. I always have my virus software running on this computer, since I use it for internet access, email, downloading recipes and the like exclusively. It never even dawned on me until just now to turn it off when searching. [ Top of Page ] 17. Stopping the SierraHome Intro VideoQ: Is it possible to open MasterCook 5.0 without the musical/video intro? It was cute for awhile, now I would just like to start the program. A: Yes, there is a way. Using My Computer or Windows Explorer go into the C:/SIERRA/MasterCook 5/Program folder and delete this file: SHomeSplash.avi Now you will never see it again, and it won't affect your program whatsoever. Note: For those of you wondering what we are talking about...this file (SHomeSplash.avi) is an ad for SierraHome and runs every time you start up MasterCook unless you delete the file. This AVI file is something that has been added to the MasterCook 5.03, 5.04 & 5.05 CDs. [ Top of Page ] 18. Things to Try When MC 5 or 6 Won't OpenCANNOT LOAD IMAGE: Cannot Load Image Next time you try, it does it again! Here's a fix. Restart your computer and leave MasterCook alone. While using Windows Explorer or My Computer go to the MC TOOLS folder and look for a file called MC WORLD.MCW and delete it. (MasterCook will recreate this file when it starts back up.) This should fix the problem. Start MasterCook 5.0/6.0 and see. If not, the next step would be to uninstall/reinstall. About MCWORLD.MCW. This file is similar to MC4's rocache. MCWORLD.MCW is the main file where MasterCook stores all its file locations such as cookbooks, tips files, collections, menus, etc. This file can be corrupted with someone just abruptly turning off the power or not shutting down properly. If a user has any type of FILE NOT FOUND you can either delete this file or go to the Tools Menu and select Refresh File List (If you are able to get into the program). UNABLE TO CREATE VIEW: 'CNTS' - 'OPEN': "Unable to create view: 'Cnts' - 'open'" it means that the MCReg.ini file has become corrupt or the install is corrupt (one or more DLLs missing). The MCReg.ini file registers all of the functional elements of the MC application. If deleted, it will be re-created on application startup. A quick way to check if this is the problem: 1) Close the application. If the problem still occurs, the user should re-install. DISABLE RESTORE PREVIOUS VIEW: Do you have Restore Previous View selected in your Preferences but would like to start the program and go right to the Contents screen? Hold down the SHIFT key, then double-click the icon to launch MasterCook. That will disable "Restore Previous View" (for that session) and the program will open to the CONTENTS screen. Note that you will need to double-click the desktop icon, even if you have your settings configured to otherwise open with a single click. INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE RTCDLL.DLL: MasterCook caused an invalid page fault in module RTCDLL.DLL at 015f:3076afa8. I can do a search and pull up recipes. What happened, and how do I correct it? A: This person refreshed their list of files (select Refresh File List from the Tools Menu or press the F5 key while in the Cookbook Browser), and it solved their problem. ONLY ABLE TO VIEW CONTENTS SCREEN: A: I had the same problem this morning. I was putting some cookbooks in. You will find you have put a cookbook in that has one of the following problems. 1. The spelling and/or spacing is changed from the file name. The easiest way to find the problem book is to remove the last batch you put in and put them in one at a time and refresh. When you get to the problem one it will act up. If you are putting them in one at a time take the last one out and refresh again. You may have to shut it down all the way to correct the problem and restart the computer. I had to after each one to find the culprit. I hope this helps you! Follow-up: It worked! Thank you SO much! It was easy to suss out which "cookbook" was the problem. The wonderful part was after moving it out of MC, I didn't have to uninstall, etc. All that was necessary was closing MC. It opened again beautifully. STOPPING THE AVI FILE IN MC5: Q: Is it possible to open MasterCook 5.0 without the musical/video intro? It was cute for awhile, now I would just like to start the program. A: Yes, there is a way. Using My Computer or Windows Explorer go into the C:/SIERRA/MasterCook 5/Program folder and delete this file: SHomeSplash.avi Now you will never see it again, and it won't affect your program whatsoever. Note: For those of you wondering what we are talking about...this file (SHomeSplash.avi) is an ad for SierraHome and runs every time you start up MasterCook unless you delete the file. This AVI file is something that has been added to the MC 5.03, 5.04 & 5.05 CDs. [ Top of Page ] 19. Web Import Bar Pictures Don't ImportI have MC 8, and so far I am loving it! Except, when I use the web import bar the recipe image does not always import. I right click and click the Mastercook: Select Image and then I check of recipe picture. Sometimes it imports sometimes it does not. The web bar does not capture *.gif images, only *.jpg or *.bmp. This is a problem ValuSoft is aware of. Luckily, gif is not used as much for non-animated images as it once was, but it is still around. To be sure that's what the problem is with your images that don't capture, right-click the image on the webpage and check its Properties. You can use Windows' copy function and paste a gif image directly into your MC recipe, once it has been imported. [ Top of Page ] 20. WONSwap ApplicationQ: What is the WONSwap application? A: It is used for the Recipe Post when you export recipes. This allows you to send recipes to Sierra's Recipe Library: http://www.sierra.com/sierrahome/cooking/library/ UPDATE: The Recipe Library no longer exists since the MasterCook.com web site that hosted it was taken down. NOTE: The Recipe Post tab in the Export and Mail window has been removed from ValuSoft's v6.2 program. WONSwap is not included in the ValuSoft title either. [ Top of Page ] |
