9/11 -- The Other Day that will live in Infamy

 

The date was 9/11…suspiciously close to the universal emergency code ‘911’, and the tragic events that gripped the American Nation are truly immeasurable on any imaginable scale.  However horrific and horrible the events of this fateful day were, it is important to remember that there is no need to rush to judgment about the identity of the perpetrators of this horrible and horrific crime.  Justice must be served on those that truly deserve it…not on any scapegoat. 

 

It is important to remember to hold true to the values that we are defending, namely due process, and to avoid racial stereotyping or prejudgment regarding conclusions that lack substantiation.  Some statements that have become commonplace are terrifically tragic in their ignorance, closed-mindedness, and horrifically vengeful nature.  We must remember another American value…and that is of equality and freedom from prejudice.  We must remember that this freedom extends to everyone, regardless of race, creed, or religion.

 

As President Bush has stated, “we will get them” for “attacking freedom.”  We should concentrate our hurt and frustration on finding and punishing the culprit rather than resorting to ignorant vigilante violence.  We must remember that the racial labeling and prejudice against people of Middle Eastern descent is dangerous in that it accosts the very values that we are defending.  It is as great a threat as any terrorist because it endangers the freedom of which our society is built.  When we succumb to the natural inclination for easy blame and racial stereotyping, we hurt no one but ourselves.  Such rash reasoning furthers the cause of the perpetrators of this crime and will be the true threat to the American way of life in the coming weeks.

FACT SHEET

-The World Trade Center consists of twin 110 story towers, which were literally flattened when they were hit by two hijacked jetliners around 9am EST on September 11, 2001

-The Pentagon was also devastated by another hijacked Jetliner around the same time

-A fourth hijacked jetliner was shot down south of Pittsburgh by the US Air Force when it did not land when ordered.  Its destination was unknown, although it may have been heading to any number of targets including Camp Davis or the White House

-As of this time, the culprit is unknown; Osama bin Laden is suspected but has denied responsibility

-Osama bin Laden warned three weeks ago that he and his followers would carry out an unprecedented attack on the US for its support of Israel

-The death toll will most likely be in the tens of thousands and the US and world economies have sustained massive blows

-This is the most devastating terrorist attack ever in the history of the universe
