sarah lea malone- the oldest, 18 when the story begins. she is beautiful with curly reddish brown hair and responsible, working several jobs to support her younger siblings. she dropped out of school at sixteen to support her family. she is the only child of grant and carrie malone, who abandoned Sarah when she was three. because of this, she has a deep distrust of all who are supposed to love you.

clarke gregory malone- at 16 he is the emotional center of the family, the oldest child of eve malone. he tends to block off all emotions. he is not the best student but he does play the guitar very well, something his mother taught him. he is very tall, with long curly dirty blond hair. he is suicidal at times and feels trapped by his family obligations.

henry jacob malone- he is 15 and the emotional center of nothing, except his brother travis's world. he's very smart and cold, hanging out with the 'bad' croud. he smokes and does drugs. he's also a talented artist. the single bright spot in his life is travis, his young half-brother who he cares for at all times. he is tall, has blond hair and blue eyes.

jordan shaw malone- the older of 14 year old twins, but emotionally he is dependant on his sister, who he is secretly in love with. he is 'the bad seed,' a rebel with a terrible temper. he is a very attractive boy with long blong hair and piercing blue eyes who loves soccar and is always getting into fights.

katherine "kitty" justine malone- the younger twin, she is very smart and generally well behaved. she is a singer with a beautiful soprano voice. she's very smart but tends to deny that anything's wrong with her family.

Michael- a twelve year old redhead with an attatude, he is very good with his younger siblings, adores Clarke and fights constantly with Jordan, who he secretly idolizes.

Amanda- nine years old and the youngest child of Eve and Grant. She is not pretty, skinny but with beautiful waist length blond hair. She is a normal girl who cannot understand why her family is so different from other families.

Mary-Ann- the six year old child of Grant and his mistress Lise. She is a beautiful child with curly brown hair who is generally innocent to what goes on around her.

Travis- the youngest, he is cared for by Henry. Though he is three years old and healthy, he is a bit below the rest of his age class, able to speak in broken sentances and disliking walking. He often cries if seperated from Henry and will not eat.

Carrie Malone- the first wife of Grant Malone, she had one daughter by him and walked out when that child was three years old, unable to take the abuse but unable to support her child.

Eve Malone- the second wife, she was frail and waif-like, abused as a child by male family members. She has six children before her death in a car crash when her oldest son is eleven.

Lise Dupont- Grant's long time girlfriend, a latina woman, she left the children with Grant when she left him, when the oldest was three and the youngest was an infant.

Claire Malone- Gant's mother, a very old, sick woman torn up with guilt over abuse she gave his when he was a child.

Garrett Malone- a reasonable well off retired businessman who is very unemotional, tending to ignore anything which bothers him, like the abusive tendancies of his wife and son.
