Jile Chardad

Jile Chardad was born in Maradon to Ralsin and Davram Chardad. Jile’s parents were both worked in the palace at the Royal Library. The Saldaen Royal Library is rather large, and some say is only rivaled by the one in Tar Valon. Jile spent his years as a child roaming the long corridors of books and enriching his life with all the knowledge he could find. The books that most interested him were those authored by intellectuals, on all sorts of research topics. Davram and Ralsin noted his interest in science, and hired a tutor for their son from when he was eight until he left home at age seventeen. In addition, Jile had all sorts of people coming to teach him things. Various researchers, scholars, and Aes Sedai visited the Royal Library, and Davram delighted in giving his son guest lectures. All in all, Jile’s brain was very well developed for studying and learning.

At the age of seventeen, Jile decided that he needed to start writing his own papers for others to read. Jile had always been fascinated with Biology. He had read numerous papers on all sorts of Life studies, but what really interested him were the powers that resided beyond normal processes. Namely, Shadowspawn and Aes Sedai. Jile knew that studying either could be very dangerous, so he decided to join a group of established researchers.

Jile joined a team of researchers dedicated to the study of all the Shadowspawn in the Blight. They had papers posted around town with rates offered for the hunting of dead Shadowspawn, and were funded by the crown for the most part. Fifty-four men and women, none able to channel openly worked together in a Mansion just outside Maradon. Jile dissected hundreds of Trollocs, dozens of Mydraal, and all sorts of nasty little things over the five years that he worked with the group as a research assistant. His reports eventually became well read in the international scientific community, such as it was. Jile and his compatriots figured out where exactly Shadowspawn anatomy transcended the normal pattern and had to be influenced or created by the Power to function properly. A few brown Aes Sedai took interest in his work after he had published a few reports. His team began to get small amounts of funding, just enough to pay rent on the house, from the White Tower. Jile quickly developed his skills in dealing with Aes Sedai, who, naturally, rapidly began taking over his whole operation. The board of the group did not mind to a point, the Talents of Aes Sedai can be useful in scientific research.

Jile’s main source of income was from soldiers who ventured into the Blight. Jile taught classes on Shadowspawn anatomy, how to take out a Trolloc quicker, which manifestation of Trolloc was likely to have what traits, how to compensate, and things like that. He also gave general overviews of the more unknown Shadowspawn, the little nasties that had been seen only a few times but still brought dead for his study. On occasion, he would trade lessons with a soldier. In this manner, Jile became rather proficient with a blade.

Around the age of twenty-one, Jile began to have sporadic headaches. His research was often disrupted by these blinding pains that would take over his whole form. Jile did not know it, but he already knew how to find the void. It was the state he went into when he had to make intense calculations, or when he was studying a split-open subject intently. He had even found how to embrace the source. Jile had been using Saidin-enhanced senses for years to see multitudes of tissue and muscle samples. Only he had no idea, so the taint touched just enough to give him headaches.

One day, a previously unseen dead Shadowspawn was brought into the lab. It had the appearance of a large segmented bug, with four legs, and a huge, drooling mouth with what seemed like hundreds of misshapen teeth. There might have been more legs, but the bottom half appeared to be missing. The soldier who brought it in claimed be had found it that way, and had never seen one alive himself. Jile guessed the man was the first person to see the insect-creature and live.

The creature was placed on the table, and dissection was begun. Seven members of the research team were in the lab that day, and one Aes Sedai, all dressed in white so blood splashes could been seen. The carapace seemed impenetrable, so the Aes Sedai offered to crack it. The researchers decided instead to remove an eye for study. The instant a knife touched the eye of the creature, it burst into motion. In one liquid movement, one leg impaled the man holding the knife, another leg neatly sliced the head off of a researcher, and the other two legs supported the body as it shot into the air. Moving with blind speed, it ripped the Aes Sedai to shreds as a bolt of fire singed its carapace. It turned to face Jile. Without thinking, Jile seized Saidin and let it flow fully into him for the first time. He clumsily, but very forcefully, hooked some threads of fire, spirit, and water together. Laying the loose weave over the creature, he felt where its brain was connected to its body. He clenched his fist, and crushed the creature’s brainstem. It instantly slumped to the ground, dead. This happened one week shy of Jile’s Twenty-third naming day.

Several Asha’man happened to be visiting the palace that day, and had felt Jile’s channeling. They arrived at the library, expecting to find a madman killing people, but instead found Jile asking to return to the Tower of Will with them. They agreed.

A rich basis of both scientific and non scientific literature combined with a touch of the taint has made Jile Chardad a somewhat eccentric character. He keeps his head entirely shaved along with his cheeks and upper lip. The hair on Jile’s chin is kept carefully cut, making a large goatee that ends in a point. Jile enjoyed sports as a child, and still does. He is a decent swordsman, but prefers small bladed weapons he can hold in either of his ambidextrous hands. Being of medium build, many opponents underestimate Jile. Many a proponent have fallen to his tendency to be quick in taking any means necessary to ensure his safety and that of his friends.

Jile’s two and a half span form is generally seen wearing loose, comfortable clothes in neutral natural colors, and generally found in very close proximity to whatever he happens to be interested in studying at that particular moment. One of Jile’s major social problems is that he tends to become bored when not studying multiple things at once. When Jile becomes bored, he tends to study his surroundings, which always involves seeking the void, and usually involves unconsciously seizing Saidin. On the way to the Tower with the Asha’man escorts, he was frequently berated and sometimes shielded when he would seize Saidin during a lecture.

Talents: Major Healing, Minor Traveling, Minor Perception

Hi, I made up perception. I couldn’t think of a good Talent (there isn’t a huge selection) for my second minor, so I figured that since Jile has used Saidin for years just as a perceptive tool, he should have that Talent. It means that his senses are enhanced more than normal. When holding Saidin, he can see as if a candle had been lit in almost total dark, hear a low voice in a crowded room, have the Wolfkin emotion smell sense, that sort of thing. Without Saidin, he is totally normal. In addition, he has to focus hard on a given sense to improve it beyond normal Saidin enhancement. Otherwise, all those stinking corpses would have been a problem.
