Shigeru is the grandson of Ookido-Hakase, and has been studying the world of Pokémon from a very young age.

Shigeru, like many other trainers in Pallet, received his trainer's license at the age of ten. Although Satoshi did as well, Shigeru always manages to stay ahead of him--in capturing Pokémon, earning badges, and raising Pokémon.

Shigeru used to taunt and tease Satoshi, but now he gives him respect. Shigeru has learned the true way to use a Pokémon's full potential in battle.

Shigeru was the first to meet Sakaki's ultimate Pokémon, in battle! In Tokiwa Jimu! Saigo no Baaji!, Shigeru battles to try and earn an Earth Badge. Being over confident in his abilities, he demands Sakaki to produce him a worthy opponent. Sakaki unveils Myuutsuu, which easily defeats Nidokingu and Uindei, and knocks Shigeru unconscious. Satoshi battles Kojirou and Musashi, the newly appointed gym leaders, to earn an Earth Badge. Although Shigeru didn't win, this is where his respect for Satoshi begins.
