- Phaser-Is are the main combat Phasers for most Galactic Powers during this era. They are mounted on most cruisers, destroyers and dreadnoughts.
- Phaser-IIs are short range combat phasers. They mostly arm frigates and other light vessels.
- Phaser-IIIs are point defence and fighter phasers.
- Phaser-Gs, or Gatling Phasers, are used by the Hydrans for point defence. Late in the period, the Federation and others adopted Ph-Gs to fill many of the same roles as the Ph-III.
- Phaser-IVs are mounted on Starbases and other installations.

- Phaser-VIs, and Phaser Arrays, were introduced on the massive Ambassador-class Explorers.
- Phaser-VIIs were introduced on the even larger Galaxy-class.
- Both Ph-VIs and Ph-VIIs have two setttings. The first fires at full power; the second allows it to fire twice an action with the same stats as a Ph-III.
- During this period, most Federation starships are constructed with Phaser Arrays, long strips containing multiple emitters, able to shunt power from one emitter to the next. This allows more effcient and less wearing use of the phasers, as well as allowing a ship to concentrate most of it's firepower on one target. In game terms, the major advantages of Phaser Arrays are:
- the Kills of all the Phasers in a Array are added together; this reflects the greater durability of Arrays.
- all Phasers in an Array share the same Arcs of Fire. For something like a Galaxy-class, this means that you have almost 360x360 coverage with the two Arrays in the saucer section.
- all Phasers in an Array are considered to be linked.
