Pour salt onto the stain to blot it, then soak in cold water & rinse. If a mark remains treat with a stain remover before washing. In an emergency, white wine poured onto the red wine will often take most of the colour out.

Candle wicks will not smoke if they are soaked in a little vinegar, then left to dry before using. Candles will burn more slowly, if you sprinkle the top with a little salt.

Put the onion in the fridge for about an hour before peeling, or peel under cold running water. Cut the root end off last.
