Flora Ladies 5km Challenge - Report from Gill Burns
My friends & I met bright & early to travel to London in convoy. We arrived in Hyde park in plenty of time. After taking part in the lively warm up we made our way to the start – well as near as we could. After about 20mins we were off amidst the cheers of our families & hundreds of other well wishers.
It was a fantastic atmosphere, especially with bands playing, cars & buses hooting as the course took us out of the park & onto Park Lane.

We couldn’t run too fast due to the mass of people – over 20,000, so a few ankles got clipped (ouch!). Most of the time we were moving at a brisk walking pace.
As we got close to the finish all of our children joined us apart from my nine year old son Daniel; he had been with us from the start. I then got out of my chair & walked over the finish line, much to the delight of the crowd & photographers – I dread to think what the official photo will look like. Once we had collected our medals & goody bags we cracked open the Champagne to a job well done & to next years event.
A BIG THANK YOU to all of you who sponsored me. As yet the final total raised is not yet known but to date over £300 has been pledged to the branch.

Abseil raises £3,000 for Herts & Essex Region
A few months have passed since members of the Herts & Essex Region took part in the “Abseil for Charity” at the Water Tower at Church Langley organised by Harlow Rotary.
Fourteen volunteers from the region, including Pete Filby and Hazel Roethenbaugh from our own branch, bravely climbed or in Hazel’s case were carried, (something to do with the two young Marines who did the carrying we are told!) to the top of the 130 foot water tower and abseiled down.
On behalf of the Regional committee, I would like to congratulate all who took part and thank all the sponsors for over £3,000 raised. A wonderful boost to the regions funds.

SWIMATHON – WHEN IS IT?
As you may know from the local paper the Swimming Pool has yet to open its doors.
The Swimathon due for 6th October has been postponed to a later date.
It has been confirmed that the swim will be able to go ahead soon after the pool has opened. It was decided that as the sponsorship forms had already been printed it would be much easier to amend the date than to find another location.
THIS STILL MEANS WE NEED SWIMMERS!
Please contact Sandra, either by telephone on 01438 224392 or by e-mail clicking on this link sandra.kilford@ntlworld.com to say if you are interested.
The aim is to raise money for our branch and other charities. Once you have registered your interest with Sandra she will contact you again when the date has been finalised.
