Mod files require a MOD player in order to hear them. MOD4WIN, or MODPLUG are good but others exist. Mod music tends to be either very poor, or very exciting and even superb, depending on the level of professionalism of the creator. Some of these are incredible: Don't ignore Row Row Row Your Boat, its not kids stuff and gets wilder and wilder as it goes on!!!

Understand that the better the sound card the better these will sound. Note also that the playing of mod files is processor intensive, and so the Java animation may well be slowed down during the music.
