If you know of any other songs by Alanis, or of anywhere else these can be found, please Sign My Guestbook.

Also, If you have any lyrics corrections (be sure about it), please Sign My Guestbook.

All lyrics are written the way they are sung, not the way they are originally written.

IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING WHY I HAVE SEPARATE LYRICS TO THE LIVE PERFORMANCES: As we all know, when a performer performs something live, it's got slight differences to the original. The same goes with Alanis, so when she sings something, it's a little different each time, so that's why I felt like I should put up lyrics to her live performances, as well as the interviews that often go with them. In addition, since my lyrics include the um's oh's ooh's and other sounds like that, and they change greatly for each performance, that is why I have included them.

Ben Stiller: Ladies and Gentlemen Alanis Morissette!

How 'bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out
How 'bout not equating death with stopping

Baba (Live from Saturday Night Live Saturday October 24th, 1998)

Ben Stiller: Once again, Alanis Morissette!

[Applause]

[Hard Rock Guitar Intro]

[Band continues to play extremely loud while Alanis belts out the words]

I've seen them kneel
With baited breath for the ritual
I've watched this experience raise
Them to pseudo higher levels
I've watched them leave their families
In pursuit of your Nirvana
I've seen them coming to line up
From Switzerland and America

How long will this take Baba?
How long have we been sleeping?
Do you see me hanging on to
Ev'ry word you say
How soon will I be holy?
How much will this cost guru-u-u?
How much longer 'til you
Completely absolve me?

I've seen them give their drugs up
In place of makeshift altars
I've heard them chanting
Kali kali frantically
I've heard them rotely repeat your
Teachings with elite-ism [elite pronounces 'eleet']
I've seen them boasting robes and
Foreign sandalwood beads

How long will this take Baba?
How long have we been sleeping?
Do you see me hanging on to
Ev'ry word you say
How soon will I be holy?
How much will this cost guru-u?
How much longer 'til you
Completely absolve me

A-e-e-e-e-e-a Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

I've seen them overlooking God in
Their own essence
I've seen their upward glances
In hopes of instant salvation
I've seen their righteousness
Mixed without Loving compassion
I've watched you smile as
The students bow to kiss your feet

How long will this take Baba?
How long have we been sleeping?
Do you see me hanging on to
Ev'ry word you say
How soon will I be holy?
How much will this cost guru-u-u?
How much longer 'til you
Completely absolve me
Give me strength all knowing one
How long 'til enlightenment?
How much longer 'til you
Completely absolve me

Ave mari-i-a
Ave mari-i-a
Ave mari-i-a
Ave mari-i-aaaaaa

[Almost Whispered]: Thank You

Unsent (From The Late Show with David Letterman Wednesday January 13th, 1999) [With interview]

David Letterman: How do ya do, and how do ya do? Our next guest made her first network television debut right here uh with her first CD which has become the biggest-selling album of the 90's. Her her her acclaimed [Cheers from crowd] her acclaimed new CD is called Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie [Mispronounced Supposed as 'Suh posed']. It's always a pleasure to have her with us, please welcome Alanis Morissette

[Alanis performs Unsent:]

Dear Matthew:
I like you a lot
I realize you're in a relationship
With someone right now
And I-I-I respe-ect that
I'd like you to know
That if you're ever single in the future
And you want to
Come visit me in California
I would be
Open to spending time with you
And finding out how old you were
when you wrote your fi-irst song

Dear Jonathan:
I liked you too much
I used to be attracted to boys
Who would lie to me
And think solely about
Themselves and you were
Plenty self-destructive
For my taste at the time
I used to say
The more tragic the better
The truth is
Whenever I think of the early 90's
Your face comes up with a vengeance
Like it was yesterday-ay

De-ear Terrance:
I love you muchly
You've been nothing but open hearted
And emotionally available
And supportive and
And nurturing and consummately there for me-e
I kept drawing you in
And pushing you away
I remember how beautiful it was to
Fall asleep on your couch and cry
In front of you for the first time
You were the best platform from which
To jump beyond myself
What was wro-o-ong with me-e-e

De-e-ear Marcus:
You rocked my world
You had a charismatic way
Aboutchya with the women
And you got me seriously thinking about
Spirituality and you wouldn't let me get away
With kicking my own ass
But I could never really feel relaxed
And looked out for around you though
And that stopped us from going any further
Than we did
And it's kinda to-oo bad
Because we could've had much more fu-un

De-e-ear Lou:
We learned so much
I realise we won't be able to
Talk for some time
And I understand that as I do you
The long distance thing
Was the hardest
We did as well as we could
We were together
During a very tumultuous time in our lives
I will always have your back
And be curious aboutchyou
About your career your whereabouts

[Harmonica Solo]

[Cut to Commercial]

[Return from commercial, Alanis is sitting with David Letterman at the desk]

David Letterman: Alanis Morissette ladies and gentlemen. That's is that uh uh the song is that the one, the names mentioned in the song, these are actual people from your life, is that, am I thinking of the right thing or is that something else?

Alanis Morissette: No those are people

Dave: And and so you have to contact them and you say 'guess what Larry I'm gonna put you in the song' right?

Alanis: Well I don't have to but.. I... yes

Dave: Well you could put them in, yeah because it's just the first name, it's not like you're giving their mailing address.

Alanis: Right, so they're....

Dave: But you were nice enough to contact them and ask them

Alanis: Some of them I contacted. A few of them...

Dave: Good

Alanis: ... Um some of whom I hadn't spoken to in a long time...

Dave: Good

Alanis: ... Just to check in with them because you know they're gonna recognise themselves and by default some people are gonna hear this time so...

Dave: Yeah, and and what was the response when all of a sudden they get the call and yes they're gonna be use your name in the song and stuff, were they pleased about that or...?

Alanis: Um, they were pleased about the it in that I used sort of variations of their names or nicknames so it wasn't specifically them and the very fact that I connect with them in and of itself I think made them feel kind of well we're connected...

Dave: Yeah

Alanis ... and the songs, sometimes I write songs and it allows me to kind of get away with not connecting with people but this song kind of forced me to

Dave: Because as we know, as we go through our lives not all relationships with uh people uh are are pleasant, end up pleasant

Alanis: Right

Dave: Uh and I think you called that to our attention in earlier work.

[Laughter] [Applause] [Dave Laughing]

Dave: That's pretty good. Everybody liked that song just because of just the the the aggression and the venom. Just raw and unbridled and just like oh sure of course we've all parked in that space, you know what I'm saying?

Alanis: Yeah I do know what you're saying

Dave: Uh so now you know we talked about you, the first time you were on a network TV show was ours back in 1995... and tell me... give me an idea of things you've done in your life since then that you had not done before

Alanis: Well we toured for almost a year and a half

Dave: Do you like that, is that invigorating or just nuts?

Alanis: It was crazy last time around, I have a little more perspective on it this time...

Dave: Um-hmm

Alanis: ... So I think it would be less nuts, um and I took a year and a half off, because it had been so overwhelming that I needed to kind of...

Dave: Yeah

Alanis: ... take some time and assimilate everything and get back to normal, see whatever that means.

Dave: But you went and participated in these, in the the triathlon...

Alanis: Yeah

Dave: ... which to me just seems like well, that's... well you should be checked; because that's not... it's bikin, it's swimming, and it's uh, you finish up with a big run...

Alanis: Yeah

Dave: ...or what does that, what does that do to you mentally, does that exhilarate you or does that, do you find that wearying?

Alanis: It was exhilarating in that I had kind of put all those things on the back burner for so many years and um just wanted to use my body as an instrument as opposed to the ornamant that society had sort of you know made me believe it was solely, so it was great

Dave: Is it safe to say you're in the top physical condition of your life?

Alanis: Uh this very second, no, but what I was doing then, yes

Dave: Every morning when I get up [Clears throat] before I do anything else; eight sit-ups.

[Laughter, applause]

Dave [To producer]: How we doing her? Is this the end? [To Audience:] Okay we'll be right back ladies and gentlemen

[Cut to commercial, with the Late Show band playing Dave Matthews Band's "Too Much"

[Return, to the end of above tune]

Dave: Yeeeeeeee-yes siree. Well it seems like a lovely piece of work [referring to the copy of SFIJ in his hand], and you seem like a lovely woman and a very nice woman as well

Alanis: Thank you

Dave: I wish you all the best. Have a great new year and come back again

Alanis: Thank you, thank you, I'll be back...

Dave: Alanis Morissette ladies and gentlemen. We'll see you tomorrow with William Baldwin, Scott Birrell, and Trisha Yearwood. [Blows a kiss] Goodnight everybody!

[Return from commercial to applause]

Rosie O'Donnell: So happy that she's here, her uh first CD-brilliant, here second-just as brilliant; Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is the name of the new one, please welcome Alanis Morissette.

[Applause]

Interview from the Rosie O'Donnell Show Thursday January 14th, 1999

[Return from Commercial to applause and music]

Rosie O'Donnell: We're back with Alanis Morissette, thank you so much for being here
Alanis Morissette: Thank you for being here
Rosie: How's it goin'?
Alanis: It's going so well. I just want to before we start...
Rosie: What?
Alanis: I know that you have a clip of me on Star Search
Rosie: Who told you that?
Alanis: I found out through my sources and I actually wanna play your clip on Star Search before you play mine
[Applause, cheers]
Rosie: Do not even...Deirdre! ...
Alanis (quietly): Roll the clip
Rosie: Did you really do that?
Alanis (naively): Yeah, roll the clip please
[Applause]
[Laughter]
[Clip of Rosie as a young comedienne on Star Search (1984), on a stage with a microphone]:
Rosie: ...hard to get used to, I started out last night right next to the phone. I woke up this morning, I'm over here, the phone's ringin', I had to catch a wave to answer it. I did...
[Laughter]
[Applause]
Rosie (back on the show): Isn't that nice? I was uh going to surprise you with a Star Search clip
[Laughter]
Alanis: I'll, I'll be surprised, you know what I haven't seen it since I did it so...
Rosie (Sarcastically): Surprise here's a clip of Alanis on Star Search, take a look
Alanis [on Star Search (1990), singing and dancing to really quick music]: Why is true love just so hard to fi-i-ind...
Rosie (in the studio, clip continues to roll): Now how old were you?
Alanis (on Star Search): why is true love just so hard to fi-i-ind, and I'm saying that I'm in love with you
[cheers]
Rosie (back in the studio): Cute. Cause you know what it's cute because you were 14
Alanis: Right
Rosie: You were 14, you had a Linda Blair look goin' on there you know
[Laughter]
[Alanis laughs]
Alanis: A few people have actually told me that
Rosie: Yeah with that long curly perm, I used to have one of those too
Alanis: I feel like I looked older when I was 14 than I do now, it's very funny how that works
Rosie: Now wa-, was your, your family in show biz? 'Cause I know you did that, the Nickelodeon show and this, did they push sort of for show
Alanis: They didn't push me, they supported me. My father was an avid sort of music fan and my mom was as well, um, but we weren't technically a music or entertainment industry family then, no
Rosie: No, it wasn't like she was a state mom your mom or anything
Alanis: No
Rosie: No
Alanis: They were great though, it was me that was sort of fuelling it all and really passionate about it all the time
Rosie: And when you were on the Nickelodeon show did you always have aspiration to be a songwriter and singer?
Alanis: I, I just loved expressing myself in whatever shape or form, writing, painting, dancing, acting, whatever could get the energy out, it was, was something that I was kind of attracted to ... yeah
Rosie: Yeah, did it start with the poetry, because the lyrics are so unbelieveably profound, and I mean the, all of your lyrics read like poems on their own you know?
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: Sometimes you read lyrics and it sound like, oh boy you need a song for this [Laughter] oh duh, you know for yours, it, they stand on their own as poems, did you start doing that, or...?
Alanis: Mmm-hmm, I started definitely writing poetry and then I was younger and then as I got older through the teen years, I didn't write very personal music 'cause I was a little afraid to kind of be that vulnerable, and then as I got older I kind of merged the poetry and the music into one which is the most fulfilling way to write for me now
Rosie: Yeah. And the first CD, Jagged Little Pill, boy that was uh astoundingly successful [Applause], did it shock you?
Alanis [over the applause]: uh
Rosie [over the applause]: A little bit?
Alanis: [over the applause]: Yeah
Rosie: I mean 'cause you sort of had really instant fame
Alanis: It was pretty overwhelming at the time I think I kind of withdrew and kind of got into this self-protective mode and then I took a year and a half off after the tour which was great yeah
Rosie: Which is what that song Thank U India is about right, 'cause...
Alanis: It came from that yeah
Rosie: 'Cause when I was listening to that I thought "You see? This is what happened after the fame, she had to go to India and she had some solitude and disillusionment with show business and it, it inspired her to express this!"
Alanis: Eh he he, exactly
Rosie: I'm way too invested, I feel like I know you 'cause I know your lyrics
Alanis: Well that's, that's okay
Rosie: It is?
Alanis: Did you go through the same thing, did you stop ever, have you ever stopped?
Rosie: Well no, but I didn't have what you had, sort of a, a, big success quickly, I sorta been doing this for a long time, I had little incremental success, you know?
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: But it was sort of overnight for you, you were sor-- everywhere the record number one for so long
Alanis: Yeah, it was intense
Rosie: People like me singing on their show every day
[Alanis laughs]
Rosie: I'm sure it got annoying, didn't it
Alanis: I loved it
Rosie: I work out to your CD
Alanis: I heard
[Awkward pause]
Rosie: Sadly, I sing along
[Laughter]
[Alanis laughs]
Rosie:
Would you like to see a little clip of that?
Alanis: I would love to
[Laughter]
Rosie: Take a little look at me workin' out yesterday
[Alanis laughs]
[Clip of Rosie working out, You Oughta Know playing in background, Rosie sings along. At one point Alanis laughs and tries to speak, but is cut off]
Rosie (singing along to You Oughta Know): ... you're still alive
And I'm he-ere
To remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair
To deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know-ow!
[Applause]
Rosie (back in the studio): Yeah! It gets me through, I'm telling you it gets me through.... [To stage manager:] What was, what was that sign you gave me? I didn't see, John what was that sign? Er.. Rose... was that... you have to go to....
Stage Manager: You're fine
Rosie: I'm fine, oh okay, thank you, sorry, you scared me. I was watching myself so self-indulgently. Um... now um, how do you like living in LA, big adjustment from Canada?
Alanis: It's great, in that I can leave it and come back to it, I, I miss it when I'm away, I, and I really need to get out of it when I'm there too long, so...
Rosie: Yeah, you get robbed I heard
Alanis: Uh, when I first moved there, yeah
Rosie: Yeah?
Alanis: Mmm-hmm
Rosie: Broke into your house?
Alanis: No, they just followed me home
Rosie: Somebody followed you home?
Alanis: Yeah, unbeknownst to me. I quickly learned to watch my rear-view mirror as I drive in that city. It's quite a big culture shock from, from having lived in Ottawa and Toronto in Canada, where I didn't really need to deal with that, and goin' to LA apparently I did
Rosie: And did you, uh, quickly decide to move home like I would've?
Alanis: I didn't, I didn't...
Rosie: You didn't?
Alanis: ...actually I wrote a song that day, um..
[Laughter]
[Rosie laughs]
Rosie: Really?
Alanis: Yes, I often do that when I need to [gestures] release
Rosie: Now do people that you have uh broken up with ever call you and go "You know that lyric about 'check the credits for your name and wonder why it's not there', is that about me?" Do people ever do that?
Alanis: Some people, um, especially on the last record, um, definitely asked me whether it was about them, I think the very fact that they were asking whether it was about them in and of itself kind of said more than any kind of response that I could give
Rosie: Right
Alanis: You know?
Rosie: Right, right, you said "listen to it again and call me later"
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis [with a strange voice]: If you're, if you're asking...
Rosie: Right
Alanis: You know
Rosie: Oh this new CD, is, is just as wonderful as the first, it really is. Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, and congratulations on the Grammy nomination. Are you excited about that, I'm gonna be there
Alanis: Yeah
[Applause]
Rosie: Are you performing?
Alanis: Uh, I think so
Rosie: You are performing, she's performing on Wednesday February 24th and I will be hosting, and she's going to sing for us again, right after this break [applause], so don't go anywhere [music to commercial begins] Alanis Morissette, well be right back!

Uninvited (Live from the 1999 Grammy Awards, Wednesday, February 24th, 1999)

The 1999 Grammy AwardsLike, anyone would be......"Alanis Morissette for Uninvited!"

[Return from commercial]

Rosie O'Donnell (Host of the '99 Grammys): Well we're back at the Grammy awards and I really hate to do this to you people but the producers are really bugging me about the length of your speeches so um (Sung badly to the tune of You Oughta Know:) I'm here, to remind you, not to talk too long or you'll get the hook, it's not fa-air, to the others, if you take so long when the people talk, you, you, you oughta know-ow [Applause] That's right our next performer is Alanis Morissette, an amazing popular young singer and songwriter. She won a Grammy earlier this evening. I don't know if you're aware but she's thinking about writing a book called women are from Venus men are pieces of crap. Some of us take our broken obsessive relationships to therapy, she's taken her's to number one, singing her hit single Uninvited from City of Angels Soundtrack, Alanis Morissette

[Applause]

[Soft piano intro]

[Joined later by band playing softly, with a string orchestra]

Like
Anyone would be
I am flattered by your fascination with me
Like
Any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave
But you
You’re not allowed
You’re uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Must be
Strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squi-i-i-irm
Must be
Somewhat heartening [pronounced heart-10-ing as opposed to heart-un-ing]
To watch shepherd meet
She-e-e-epherd
But you
You’re not allowed
You’re uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Like
Any uncharted terri-tory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You
Speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine
Before
But this is no-ot allowed
You’re uninvited
An unfortunate slight

[String Instrumental]

I
Don’t think you unworthy
But I need a moment to deliberate

Alanis Morissette (spoken): Thank you
[Applause]
Rosie (as an announcer): If you love rock stars your prayers have been answered. To present best new artist: Shirley Manson and Billy Corgan
Billy Corgan (of the Smashing Pumpkins): Hmm... I like your act
Shirley Manson: Thank you Billy
Billy: We're here to present the best female rock vocal. These are the wom-, women, ladies? Women or ladies?
Shirley: Mmm... ladies
Billy: Ladies. Ladies who sing with a band but not in a band. You're in a band...
Shirley: yeah that's right
Billy: ... so you could not win this award
Shirley: The nominations for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance are---
Billy (interrupting and taking over her last few words): You were supposed to pick up on the joke
Shirley (Bluntly): Uh huh, I got the joke. [Songs play in background as the nominations are announced, and camera goes to nominee]. Raspberry Swirl by Tori Amos, There Goes the Neighbourhood by Sheryl Crow, Glass House by Ani DiFranco, Uninvited by Alanis Morissette, and Can't Let Go by Lucinda Williams. And the Grammy goes to...
[Brief pause as Billy opens the envelope]
Billy: Alanis Morissette for Uninvited!

Uninvited and Thank U from the Nobel Peace Prize Winners Party

[End of Bill Clinton's speech on Nobel Peace Prize Winners)

[Applause]

[Alanis walks onto stage to the opening guitar sounds of Baba]

Alanis (spoken): Congratulations to John Hume and David Trimble. God bless you both for your efforts. [Applause] I mean it's very beautiful for us to be here to honour you tonight. This is a song called Uninvited

[Applause]

[Alanis performs Uninvited:]

Like
Anyone would be
I am flattered by your fascination with me
Like
Any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave
But you
You’re not allowed
You’re uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Must be
Strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squi-i-i-irm
Must be
Somewhat heartening
To watch shepherd meet
She-e-epherd
But you
You’re not allowed
You’re uninvited
An unfortunate slight

[Instrumental]

Like
Any uncharted terri-tory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You
Speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine
Before
But this is no-ot allowed
You’re uninvited
An unfortunate slight

I
Don’t think you unworthy
But I need a moment to deliberate

[Instrumental]

[Spoken:] Thank you very much

[Alanis performs Thank U]

How 'bout getting off o' these antibiotics
How 'bout stopping eating when I am full up
How 'bout them transparent dangling carrots
How 'bout that ever elusive kudo

Thank you India
Thank you terror
Thank ya disillusionme-ent
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you, tha-ank you sile-ence

How 'bout me not blaming you for everything
How 'bout me enjoying the moment for once
How 'bout how good it feels to finally forgive you
How 'bout grieving it all one at a time

Thank you India
Thank you terror
Thank you disillusionme-ent
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you, tha-ank you sile-ence

The moment I let go of it
Was the moment I got more than I could handl-le
The moment I jumped off of it
Was the moment that I touched down

How 'bout no longer being masochistic
How 'bout remembering your divinity
How 'bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out
How 'bout not equating death with stopping

Thank you India
Thank you providence
Thank you disillusionme-ent
Thank you [slight pause]
nothingness
Thank you clarity
Thank you, thank you sile-ence

Ee yeah ah ee yeah ho oh oh no oh oh no oh oh oh oh oh oh no oh oh no oh oh oo oh no ho oh oh oh no-o no oh oh oo oh no oo oh oh no oh ah oo ow no oh no-o oh oh oh no oo oh oh oh oh

So Pure (From The Late Show with David Letterman Friday July 23rd, 1999) [With interview]

[return from commercial to applause]

David Letterman: Alright, our next guest is uh clearly one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the uh decade, her current CD is called Supposed [mispronounced] Former Infatuation Junkie, and this weekend she's performing at the thirtieth anniversary of the Woodstock Festival, ladies and gentleman, Alanis Morissette!

[applause]

[Alanis sings So Pure, playing guitar immediately before, during and immediately after the chorus]

You from New York
You are so relevant
You reduce me to cosmic te-ears

Luminous more so than
Most anyo-one
Unapologetically alive
Knot in my stomach and
Lump in my throat

I love you when ya dance
When you free-style in tra-ance
So-o pure such an expression

Love you when you da-ance
When you free-style in tra-ance
So-o-o pure such an expression

Suppos
èd former infatuation ju-unkie
I sink three pointers and you wax poetically

I love you when ya dance
When you free-style in tra-ance
So-o pure such an expression

I love you when you da-ance
When you free-style in tra-ance
So-o-o pure such an expression

Let's grease the wheel over tea 'nd
Let's discuss things in confidence and
Let's be outspoken
Let's be ridiculous
Let's solve the world's proble-e-e-e-ems

Love you when you dance
When you free-style in tra-ance
So-o-o pure such an expression

I love you when you da-ance
When you free-style in tra-ance
So-o-o pure such an expression

[Guitar/Percussion solo]

So-o-o pu-ure

[Applause]

Alanis (spoken): Thank you

[Cut to commercial]

[Return from commercial to applause]

David Letterman: That's a great song. I like that song. But I was, I was uh talking to you about uh the band, you know, uh, night after night after night I get to hear great music from uh Paul and the CBS Orchestra, and also from people who [Applause] come in. I'd say you, you really start to notice from one group to the next what, you know, what's goin' on, and then these guys sound teriffic, I'm telling you something, that's a pretty good deal [Applause] [Alanis claps] and this, this drummer guy, I'll, I'll ... is very crisp, I like that nice crisp clear, very distinctive sound.

Alanis: Yes, Gary Novak. He's amazing...

Dave (interrupting): Yeah, now you're going up there to the Woodstock deal huh?

Alanis: Yes

Dave: Now be careful, don't let the hippies getchya!

Alanis: Woah [Laughter] I've been warned

Dave: What are they, what are they talkin' about, like a billion people are gonna show up?

Alanis: There's gonna be a few people there

Dave: Yeah, now does that, does that change... when you're workin' a venue like that, where it's, where it's outdoors, it, will it be the same group of people, I mean you're pretty much reliant on their sound system there, aren'tchya? I mean is it gonna be okay, musically?

Alanis: It'll be, it'll be great. It's be a sort of a more organic muddier version

Dave: Yeah, yeah, are you, are you n-nervous at all?

Alanis: I'm excited, yeah

Dave: Yeah, well do you know what time you're going on, it's like a big three-day lovefest

Alanis: Yeah

Dave: I think, I think there's going to be, I'm, I'm under the impression there'll be some free love

Alanis: Yes, there'll be a bundle

[Applause]

Dave: I'm there dude!

Alanis: Alright, I think I'm on at uh Saturday at around six or so

Dave: Oh six in the evening.

Alanis: Yes

Dave: Well that's pretty good...

Alanis: Are you coming?

Dave:...right at the end of the day... yeah of course I'm coming, try to keep me away! [laughter] uh... the album... the current CD is Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. Great, great music and great to have you here.

Alanis: Thank you so much.

Dave: Good luck this weekend. Alanis Morissette. That's it we gotta go. We'll see you Monday night with Ted Koppel. Have a good weekend. Good night everybody.

MuchMusic Interview at Woodstock '99, Saturday July 24th, 1999

Bill Welychka: We've been hanging out in the artists' compound, this is the uh dressing room of Alanis Morissette and I have to ask first of all who are your neighbours, you don't know yet?
Alanis Morissette: I have no idea who my neighbours are actually but I probably will find out
Bill: 'Cause I'm just thinking you don't want maybe Korn next to you
Alanis: Why not?
Bill: Because, well there goes the neighbourhood
Alanis: Really:
Bill: There'll be trash everywhere, there'll be loud music and garbage strewn all over the place
Alanis: Really? Is that what they're like? I don't, I dunno, I've heard really sweet things about them
Bill: They're gonna steal your Ryder I think maybe
Alanis: Oh! he he... They have plenty of their own I'm sure
Bill: Ha ha, it's never enough! Well you know what I have to ask; is, is this gonna be just another stop for you on your summer tour, beacuse you have a , you have a busy summer, there's a lot of dates I know coming up ahead especially with your own tour
Alanis: Mm-hmm
Bill: Um, is this just gonna sorta blend into all of them or is this one a little more special?
Alanis: We just got back from Europe so this is just like the giant exclamation point, so it's for the end of our tour really
Bill: Mm-hmm
Alanis: It's, it's sort of our being integrated back into the American culture, he he... so it's great I'm really happy to be here today too such as Dave Matthews, and I love Rage Against The Machine as well
[Transcriber's note: yes this makes as much sense to me as it does to you]
Bill: The fact that it is a cultural landmark than just the name itself Woodstock
Alanis: Yeah
Bill: Does that, does that lend itself to any kind of speciality on some part though?
Alanis: I love it just because it's an amazing snapshot of what 1999 is about musically
Bill: Mm-hmm
Alanis: With, with the genre of music kind of melding togetther really and there, there needing to be more tents and more opportunities for different styles of music to be heard which is amazing.
Bill: Joni Mitchell in the '69 generation
Alanis: Yeah
Bill: Commented on uh "We are golden" do you think you could summarize this generation that easy? And if you can what would Alanis Morissette's take on it be?
Alanis: On this era? Um... "melting pot" -- those are two words -- but it's pretty melting pottish and I dig it
Bill: Yeah?
Alanis: Yeah
Bill: Is there a sense of peace, at all, doing something like this. 'Cause I know a lot of your music, if anyone's read the lyrics you're a very spiritual... that kinda goes hand-in-hand with Woodstock
Alanis: [mumbles almost as if to herself] what it was founded on [speaking to Bill now] Um I think there's a lot of people here to spread love and peace and harmony and I think there's a lot of people here to do everything other than that and I feel like there's a lot of consciousness and unconsciousness and everything so that's part of the charm of getting this amount of people together is that you get everything.
Bill: And do you have a chance to actually go out and experience stuff though?
Alanis: I have the opportunity to [Laughs] I'm pretty happy back here right now but I think I will be more than exposed to the energy out there in a few minutes I'm sure
Bill: Okay thank you very much and uh stay away from Korn and those guys
Alanis: Oh okay, thank you for the warning

Hi-I recommend gettin' your heart trampled on, to anyone oh oh yeah yeah

You Oughta Know (as performed at Woodstock '99, Saturday July 24th, 1999)

[Slow, almost chant-like]

I want you to know, that I am happy for you
And I wish nothing but, the best for you both
An older version of me
Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theatre?
Does she speak eloquently?
And would she have your baby?
I’m sure she’d make a really excellent mother

‘Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn’t able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no!
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how ya told me you’d hold me
Until you died, ‘til you died
But you’re still alive

And I’m here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fai-air, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know-ow

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I’m not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me, Mr. Du-plicity?
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
But it was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
‘nd are you thinking of me when you fuck her?

‘Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn’t able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no-oo-oh
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you’d hold me
Until you died, ‘til ya died, but you’re still alive!

And I’m here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fai-air, to deny me
Of the cross I bear thatchya gave to me
You, you, you oughta know-ow

[Growls]

[instrumental break, with Alanis doing a long moan/wail-like thing]

‘Cause the joke thatchya laid in the bed that was me
And I’m not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes, and you know it!
And everytime I scratch my nails down someone else’s back
I hope you feel it . . . well can ya feel it?!

Well I’m here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fa-air, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that ya gave to me
You, you, you oughta know
Why I’m here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fa-air, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know-ow!

Ironic (as performed at Woodstock '99, Saturday July 24th, 1999)

[Alanis:] Hi yi yi ya yi yi yoy yoy hoy

An old man turned ninety-eight
[Audience:] He won the lottery-y, died the next day
[Alanis:] It’s a [Audience:] black fly [Alanis:] in your [Audience:] Chardonnay
[Alanis (thru to end):] It’s a death ro-ow pardon two minutes too late
And isn’t it ironic . . . don’t you think?

It’s like rai-ee-ain on your wedding day
It’s a free-ee ri-i-i-ide when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advi-ee-i-ice that you just didn’t ta-ee-ake
'Nd who would’ve thought? . . . it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his su-uitcase, kissed his kids good-bye-ee-ye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
“Well isn’t this nice. . .”
And isn’t it ironic. . . don’t you think?

It’s like rai-ee-ain on your wedding day
It’s a free-ee ri-i-i-ide when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advi-ee-i-ice that you just didn’t ta-ee-ake
And who would’ve thought . . . it figures

Well life has a funny way, of sneaking up on ya
When you think everything’s okay and everything’s going ri-ee-i-ee-i-ee-ight
And yeah well life has a funny way, of helping you out when
You think everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up
In your fa-a-ace

A traffic jam when you’re already la-ate
A no-smo-oo-oking sign on your cigarette break
It’s like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a kni-ife
It’s meeting the man of my dreams
And meeting his beautiful wife
And isn’t it ironic... don’t you think?
A little too-oo-oo-oo-oo ironic ... and yeah I really do think...

It’s like rai-ee-ain on your wedding day
It’s a free-ee ri-ide when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advi-ee-i-ice that you just didn’t ta-ee-ake
And who would’ve thought . . . it figu-ures

Alanis: Um [Brief pause] no, only because this role was really small
Jay: Oh
Alanis: Even though the role is seemingly this really huge beautiful thing (and it was), it's smaller than one might think
Jay: Are you nervous about the role?
Alanis: No, 'cause God can be small
[Laughter]
Alanis: you know...
Jay: That right, well, it's certainly a major player in this film certainly but still name above the title, the whole bit, you know... now who else, who else is in this movie?
Alanis: oh... Chris Rock is in the movie
[Whoops from audience]
Jay: Now he's Satan? I guess he would be Satan...

Jay: God would pick anyway probably...
Alanis: Uh yes... Linda Fiorentino who God would definitely pick
Jay: I, I would pick her yeah
Alanis: I would pick her as God I would pick her yes
Jay: Now did Chris give you a hard time... Chris is a lot of fun to work with, but he...
Alanis: Chris definitely was busting my chops
Jay: Yeah
Alanis: In a very sweet way, but you know I was a beginner, this was my first time out, and even though I felt really safe, Chris made sure that he um did something particularly funny before every take that I...
Jay: Yeah
Alanis: ...did so that he could see if I could contain myself
Jay: Um-hmm...
Alanis: I barely did, it was funny
Jay: As God you could have just phwi [makes sweeping motion with hand]
Alanis: No, but God needs his or her chops busted every once in a while too
Jay: Now your tour is ending so was it fun, are you sorry it's over, was it...
Alanis: It was great

That I Would Be Good (From The Late Show with David Letterman December 16th, 1999)

[Earlier in the show, Jim Carrey appeared as a guest. He gave David a supposedly 3.5 million dollar fabrigé egg (which opens up and has a golden chicken inside], and then later, he showed Dave his New Year's plans, by ripping off his shirt, with '2000' painted on his chest. He then ran around screaming 'whoo!' and basically making an ass of himself]

[Return from commercial to applause]
David Letterman: Dee dee dee... well there you go. I thought that was pretty good. It was very nice of Jim Carrey to show us how he's gonna celebrate the new year
Paul Shaffer: [Laughs] Yeah, he's gonna knock himself out...
Dave: ...Yeah very good... uh our next guest made her movie debut playing the part of uh God, she has won seven Grammy Awards, and sold over 35 million CD's. This is her new CD right here. It's Unplugged. That's it... please welcome back Alanis Morissette

[Applause]

Ironic (Unplugged) (From Good Morning America December 17th, 1999)

Hosts Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer are discussing GMA's Millennium time capsule, a time capsule ABC has put together to be buried in front of their broadcast centre in New York.

Charles: ... and we have for entertainment not just the herald trumpets bu Alanis Morissette is here to do a couple of songs today. Her album I think to some extent uh, her debut album, really typifies this decade, the last decade of the 20th Century. It was the largest selling album ever, uh, Jagged Little Pill, by a female artist, and she's gonna be here to do some music in this half hour. In the 8:30 half hour we have a considerable crowd her: not just to hear the trumpets, not just to see us, but also to hear Alanis Morissette, so she'll be along in a little while...

[News, weather etc]
[More Millennium Time Capsule stores]
[Commercial Break]
[Return to cheers]

Charles: I am not bringing you news here when I say Alanis Morissette electrified the rock music world with her debut album Jagged Little Pill, it went on to become the biggest selling album [Clip of Alanis performing You Oughta Know live in '95 or '96 plays while he talks] ever recorded by a female singer and today Billboard Magazine will announce that the album has won yet another place in music history, it has been chosen as album of the decade. [The clip ends] And we are delighted to have Alanis Morissette with us this morning, [To Alanis] did you know that?
Alanis: I just found out myself
Charles: Neat
Alanis: That's very sweet yeah
Charles: Neat, it's so amazing I mean the largest selling album ever by a female performer, that, that outdoes the Streisand, that outdoes Ella, that outdoes Aretha, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday... was that almost overwhelming to you?
Alanis: I, I, I don't really think in those terms. I just think it's a poor chance for great things when people are open, or not open for that matter, to hearing music that comes from a very channeled honest place. It's really very comforting actually.
Charles: When it came out, people saw it as angry music, you didn't did you?
[A car in the street honks loudly three times]
Alanis: I don't think it was one-dimensionally angry, certainly, um definitely um an explosion of sorts I had repressed a lot of those emotions for a long time and when it came time to write the record I allowed myself to release what was in my sub-conscious and thtat was what was lying within
Charles: WHat I tihnk is striking is you've re-recorded some of this music for the new album, MTV Unplugged
Alanis: Mm-hmm
Charles: Is it fair to say they're more, they're softer more tempered versions of these songs?
Alanis: Yeah you know I'm getting into different layers of the songs, and breaking it down to its skeletion form is one of my favourite things to do
Charles: Well we'll let people judge for themselves, this song, Ironic, from MTV Unplugged, Alanis Morissette [Cheers] It's a pleasure to meet you

[Alanis performs Ironic (Unplugged)]

Hi yi yi yi yi yi yi yi-i

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery-y, 'nd died the next day
It’s a black fly in your Chardonnay-ay-ay
It’s a death ro-ow pardon two minutes too late
And isn’t it ironic . . . don’t you think?

It’s like rai-ee-ai-ee-ai-ee-ain on your wedding day
It’s a free ri-i-i-i-ide when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advi-ee-i-ee-i-ice that you just didn’t take
'Nd who would’ve thought? . . . it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his su-u-uitcase, kissed his kids good-bye-ee-ye
He waited his whole damn life to take that fli-ight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
“Well isn’t this nice. . .”
And isn’t it ironic. . . don’t you think?

It’s like rai-ee-ai-ee-ai-ee-ain on your wedding day-ay
It’s a free-ee ri-ee-i-ee-ide when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advi-ee-i-ee-ice that you just didn’t ta-ake
And who would’ve thought . . . it figures

Well life has a funny way, of sneaking up on ya
When you think everything’s okay and everything’s going ri-ee-i-ee-i-ee-ight
And yeah well life has a funny way, of helping you out when
You think everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up
In your fa-a-ace

A traffic jam when you’re already la-ate
A no-smo-o-oking sign on your cigarette break
It’s like ten thousand spoo-oons when all you need is a kni-ife
It’s meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn’t it ironic... don’t you think?
A little too-oo-oo-oo-oo ironic ... and yeah I really do think...

It’s like rai-ee-ai-ee-ai-ee-ain on your wedding day-ay
It’s a free-ee ri-ee-i-i-ide when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advi-ee-i-ee-i-ice that you just didn’t ta-ake
And who would’ve thought . . . it figu-u-u-u-u---

[Return to loud cheers]

Charles: Not long after her debut album became one of the most popular records in rock history, Alanis Morissette decided she needed a break and for the next year or so she traveled the world. One day while trecking in the Himalayas, she wrote a song in her diary called That I Would Be Good and it's on her new CD MTV Plugged [sic] and she's gonna be playing it for us in just a few moments. We're gonna put Jagged Little Pill into the time capsule, which as we mentioned, sold more than any other, well... [We'll not] got through that again.
Alanis: Huh [forced laugh]
Charles: But we asked you for a suggestion of what album we oughta put in, what did you suggest?
Alanis: I suggested Graceland by Paul Simon
Charles: How come?
Alanis: I remember when I was younger um [loud honks resonate from street] I heard the album I was just blown away. My father loved it, he was playing it all the time, and I heard it and I just loved how he integrated his travels into this music and his awareness and uh I think he's a genius
Charles: Well it's also a reference back to Elvis, which is important...
Alanis: yes
Charles: ... but I hate the idea that you heard it when you were young! [Laughs]
Diane Sawyer: I was gonna say, I heard Paul Simon was going on Prozac...
[All three laugh]
Charles: Here it is, Alanis Morissette!

[Alanis peforms That I Would Be Good (Unplugged)]

[Applause]

That I would be good even if I did nothing
That I would be good even if I got the thumbs down
That I would be good if I got and stayed sick
That I would be good even if I gained ten pounds

That I would be fine even if I went bankrupt
That I would be good if I lost my hair and my youth
That I would be great if I was no longer que-e-e-een
That I would be grand if I was not all knowi-ing

That I would be loved even when I numb myself
That I would be good even when I am overwhelmed
That I would be loved even when I was fuming
That I would be good even if I was clingy-y-y

That I would be good even if I lost sanity
That I would be good
Whether with or without you

Ha-aye 'nd aye aye oh hi

(Flute solo courtesy Alanis)

[Applause]

Charles (To Alanis): Thank you so much you can come back any time, thank you [To audience:] We take a break, our thanks to Alanis Morissette, when we come back we will bury the time capsule [Cheers from audience]. Stay with us

Rosie: How did you make bath salts???
