The Municipality of Santa Maria de Nebaj is one of the twenty one municipalities that compose the Department of El Quiche. It is located at an altitude of 1907 meters above the sea level and is situated between the Cuchumatanes Mountain range and the Chama Mountain range. This municipality is in an area known as the Ixil Triangle. The Ixil Triangle is composed of three small towns, Nebaj, Chajul and Cotzal. Nebaj is the largest of the three towns. The strength of the Indigenous culture is overwhelming. The major languages spoken in the region are Ixil, K'anjobal, K'iche and Spanish. You need to drive approximately six to seven hours from Guatemala City to arrive at the Ixil Triangle. Here are some of the pictures that will give you a flavor of the town of Nebaj and its people. This is one of the areas that most suffered during the 36 year old internal war.
