Wyrm Point Of View
In order to run a game with realistic minions of the wyrm, you must first understand it's denizens beliefs. After all, not all of your antagonists are mindless killers. Why would a logically thinking intelligent executive or a gaian garou willingly turn to the wyrm? The Book of the Wyrm brings up the idea, through separate urge wyrms, that the wyrm uses the most effective method to recruit "worthy" individuals. This makes it so that the Wyrm's cause becomes the individuals, and does not require force to make that individual carry out the wyrm's wishes. For protagonists of lesser caliber (aka: cannon fodder) the wyrm probably has corrupted them by force and they may harbor some misgivings about serving the wyrm if they still have a piece of their sanity. |
The best ways to corrupt humans are pretty obvious. Due to the veil, they are mostly unknowing of the conflict occurring around them. The wyrm preys on humanity's cruelty, conflict, and fear of anything different. A bane playing on the facets of human nature insinuates itself inside a person. It could either be placed there with a befouled product from pentex or attracted by the individual's own psychology and behavior. The bane then waits until it is strong enough to gain ascendance, and all the while encourages the human's darker side. After this, the creature does the wyrm's bidding. Also, banes often seek out BSD kinfolk for the purpose of leading them into wyrm hunting grounds to be found and captured by BSDs, giving the banes a greater chance of survival. |
The Wyrm uses several methods for recruiting garou. First the Black Spiral Dancers are born directly into corruption, and don't need much more encouragement than death by their peers if they refuse. Ways to corrupt gaian garou are not so straightforward. The wyrm may use banes to tempt garou, making empty promises, and questioning their beliefs. The arguments used on these garou are as follows. In the beginning the triat was maintained. When the weaver gained self awareness it went insane, and trapped the wyrm in its webbing. This has gone on too long and the only way to fix it is to destroy the weaver's creations, and start anew. This again should be oriented to what would work best for the target individual, and what would be most convincing. |
A prime example of this argument can be seen in the conversion of the White Howlers. Before the White Howlers became BSDs, they focused on violence and barbaric behavior. They used rituals to go to a realm of Malfeas, consisting of a dark spiral, as a Rite of Passage, or for the subject of a spirit quest. They did this so as to fight the wyrm creatures there seeking to weaken and destroy the Wyrm. The White Howlers were infected from within as their kinfolk where corrupted by banes, and their mystics returned with secret knowledge of the Wyrm. They were convinced that the truth lay with the weaver being the true opponent, and the wyrm attacking back for its freedom. They believed that when the wyrm is freed, it will return to its appointed task of balancer. |
The BSDs also have several tactics of their own. They steal cubs of other tribes and speak to them the beliefs of the Wyrm. Or they capture garou and breed with them, converting when they can. The usual targets for this recruitment are elders suffering from Harano, garou of Pictish blood (usually from tribes that breed with Scottish kinfolk, namely the Fianna and Silver Fangs), or werewolves that, through negative emotions, attract banes. |
