The photos below show students from Northern Hills Junior High School as they join a number of other students and adults for the annual "Running of the Lizards" organized by the Center for North American Herpetology. The event is designed to learn more about the non-native lizards that have established themselves near 21st and Gage in Topeka, Kansas. The photos below are from the 12 September 2004 event.

Note that most of the lizards are set free after the event. Some are kept in biology classrooms for continued study.

Most of the non-native lizards found in Topeka are Italian Wall Lizards like the ones in the photo above. They either escaped or were set free from an animal supply house during the late 1950's or early 60's. Search for "Alien Lizards of Topeka" to learn more about the history of these interesting reptiles.
