The Clotworthy family,ennobled in the 17C as Lords Massereene. Memorials to members of the family and there dogs and horses stand in the grounds which was laid out late in the 17C in a formal arrangment with long ornamental stretches of water,screend by high pleached trees. Between the Norman motte and the stone bridge are these remains of the castle,accidentally burnt down in 1922.
