The derelict Torpedo- testing platform close to the river mouth was built by the Admiralty in 1942 it's now a breeding and sheltering place for many birds.
Freeze-up
1740 proved to be a very cold winter with the Lough freezing and ice forming 20 feet thick in places. It must have given the place a real "Winter Wonderland" appearance as many locals around the lough held parties, dances and even roasted sheep out on the ice. Soon afterwards a biblical ordeal of prolonged drought followed by fire, famine and plague struck .
