Samson & Goliath
The famous cranes at Belfast's Harland and Wolff shipyard have been listed as historic monuments to ensure their preservation. The cranes, known as Samson and Goliath were built between 1969 and 1974 by the German firm Krupp and were used in the construction of many ships built at this world famous yard. Actual ship building in the yard has now stopped with little work being carried out, only repairs and maintaince work is undertaken. Many of the buildings and docks around the cranes are due for redevelopment in a project to be known as 'Titanic Quarter'
The Structure in the middle of the photo is that of an oil rig brought into the yard for repair. While here the oil rig was used in scenes for a new movie (2005)'The Secret Life of Words' about life on a North Sea oil rig' starring oscar winning actor Tim Robbins
Above photo taken from Sydenham road that travels along the south side of the docks
