Co Antrim
Anglo-Norman Castle-Page One
The main attraction in Carrickfergus is this Anglo-Norman castle, built on basalt rock soon after the Norman invasion that took place in 1177. The Castle has been extended twice to secure the full promontory by the middle of the 13C. The oldest part being the inner ward which is inclosed by a high curtain wall. The gun-ports built from brick were not introduced until the 16C. The gun platforms (19C) are at the southern end and provide good views along the coastline as far as the little town of Whitehead (east), the Cave Hill and Belfast (southwest), and across Belfast Lough (southeast).
This photo taken from the rear of the castle at the harbour shows a nice view of the south-east walls and the basalt rock on which the castle was built.
On the right of the sun-light section, close to the base of the wall a small cell window contains a life size model of a medieval soldier.
