Sandstone Cliffs
On the southern shore of Cushendun some interesting red sandstone cliffs exist with a low ceiling tunnel leading to a private dwelling. The rock formation is unusual in that smooth, round washed, stones (large and small pebbles) are embedded into the red sand, this mixture is known as conglomerate or pudding stone and dates back to around 400 million years ago when a very hot desert like climate existed. these rounded stones are thought to have been washed down from the northern Caledonian hills.
